2023-01-14kbuild: refactor single builds of *.koMasahiro Yamada
[ Upstream commit f110e5a250e3c5db417e094b3dd86f1c135291ca ] Remove the potentially invalid modules.order instead of using the temporary file. Also, KBUILD_MODULES is don't care for single builds. No need to cancel it. Signed-off-by: Masahiro Yamada <masahiroy@kernel.org> Stable-dep-of: c7b98de745cf ("phy: qcom-qmp-combo: fix runtime suspend") Signed-off-by: Sasha Levin <sashal@kernel.org>
2023-01-14kbuild: unify modules(_install) for in-tree and external modulesMasahiro Yamada
[ Upstream commit 3e3005df73b535cb849cf4ec8075d6aa3c460f68 ] If you attempt to build or install modules ('make modules(_install)' with CONFIG_MODULES disabled, you will get a clear error message, but nothing for external module builds. Factor out the modules and modules_install rules into the common part, so you will get the same error message when you try to build external modules with CONFIG_MODULES=n. 2023-01-04io_uring: import 5.15-stable io_uringJens Axboe
No upstream commit exists. This imports the io_uring codebase from 5.15.85, wholesale. Changes from that code base: - Drop IOCB_ALLOC_CACHE, we don't have that in 5.10. - Drop MKDIRAT/SYMLINKAT/LINKAT. Would require further VFS backports, and we don't support these in 5.10 to begin with. - sock_from_file() old style calling convention. - Use compat_get_bitmap() only for CONFIG_COMPAT=y Signed-off-by: Jens Axboe <axboe@kernel.dk> Signed-off-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@linuxfoundation.org>

2022-10-30Makefile.debug: re-enable debug info for .S filesNick Desaulniers
This is _not_ an upstream commit and just for 5.10.y only. It is based on commit 32ef9e5054ec0321b9336058c58ec749e9c6b0fe upstream. Alexey reported that the fraction of unknown filename instances in kallsyms grew from ~0.3% to ~10% recently; Bill and Greg tracked it down to assembler defined symbols, which regressed as a result of: commit b8a9092330da ("Kbuild: do not emit debug info for assembly with LLVM_IAS=1") In that commit, I allude to restoring debug info for assembler defined symbols in a follow up patch, but it seems I forgot to do so in commit a66049e2cf0e ("Kbuild: make DWARF version a choice") Fixes: b8a9092330da ("Kbuild: do not emit debug info for assembly with LLVM_IAS=1") Signed-off-by: Nick Desaulniers <ndesaulniers@google.com> Signed-off-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@linuxfoundation.org>

2022-10-26hardening: Remove Clang's enable flag for -ftrivial-auto-var-init=zeroKees Cook
commit 607e57c6c62c00965ae276902c166834ce73014a upstream. Now that Clang's -enable-trivial-auto-var-init-zero-knowing-it-will-be-removed-from-clang option is no longer required, remove it from the command line. Clang 16 and later will warn when it is used, which will cause Kconfig to think it can't use -ftrivial-auto-var-init=zero at all. Check for whether it is required and only use it when so. 2022-10-26hardening: Avoid harmless Clang option under CONFIG_INIT_STACK_ALL_ZEROKees Cook
commit f02003c860d921171be4a27e2893766eb3bc6871 upstream. Currently under Clang, CC_HAS_AUTO_VAR_INIT_ZERO requires an extra -enable flag compared to CC_HAS_AUTO_VAR_INIT_PATTERN. GCC 12[1] will not, and will happily ignore the Clang-specific flag. However, its presence on the command-line is both cumbersome and confusing. Due to GCC's tolerant behavior, though, we can continue to use a single Kconfig cc-option test for the feature on both compilers, but then drop the Clang-specific option in the Makefile. In other words, this patch does not change anything other than making the compiler command line shorter once GCC supports -ftrivial-auto-var-init=zero. 2022-08-25kbuild: fix the modules order between drivers and libsMasahiro Yamada
commit 113147510b48e764e624e3d0e6707a1e48bc05a9 upstream. Commit b2c885549122 ("kbuild: update modules.order only when contained modules are updated") accidentally changed the modules order. Prior to that commit, the modules order was determined based on vmlinux-dirs, which lists core-y/m, drivers-y/m, libs-y/m, in this order. Now, subdir-modorder lists them in a different order: core-y/m, libs-y/m, drivers-y/m. Presumably, there was no practical issue because the modules in drivers and libs are orthogonal, but there is no reason to have this distortion. Get back to the original order. 2022-08-21Makefile: link with -z noexecstack --no-warn-rwx-segmentsNick Desaulniers
commit 0d362be5b14200b77ecc2127936a5ff82fbffe41 upstream. Users of GNU ld (BFD) from binutils 2.39+ will observe multiple instances of a new warning when linking kernels in the form: ld: warning: vmlinux: missing .note.GNU-stack section implies executable stack ld: NOTE: This behaviour is deprecated and will be removed in a future version of the linker ld: warning: vmlinux has a LOAD segment with RWX permissions Generally, we would like to avoid the stack being executable. Because there could be a need for the stack to be executable, assembler sources have to opt-in to this security feature via explicit creation of the .note.GNU-stack feature (which compilers create by default) or command line flag --noexecstack. Or we can simply tell the linker the production of such sections is irrelevant and to link the stack as --noexecstack. LLVM's LLD linker defaults to -z noexecstack, so this flag isn't strictly necessary when linking with LLD, only BFD, but it doesn't hurt to be explicit here for all linkers IMO. --no-warn-rwx-segments is currently BFD specific and only available in the current latest release, so it's wrapped in an ld-option check. While the kernel makes extensive usage of ELF sections, it doesn't use permissions from ELF segments.
