2011-03-11futex: Sanitize cmpxchg_futex_value_locked APIMichel Lespinasse
The cmpxchg_futex_value_locked API was funny in that it returned either the original, user-exposed futex value OR an error code such as -EFAULT. This was confusing at best, and could be a source of livelocks in places that retry the cmpxchg_futex_value_locked after trying to fix the issue by running fault_in_user_writeable(). This change makes the cmpxchg_futex_value_locked API more similar to the get_futex_value_locked one, returning an error code and updating the original value through a reference argument. All architecture specific rwsem headers carry the same function prototypes. Just x86 adds asmregparm, which is an empty define on all other architectures. S390 has a stale rwsem_downgrade_write() prototype. Commit df9ee29270 made arch_local_irq_save and arch_local_irq_restore static inline which with -Werror trips up on __set_hae() and _set_hae() which are extern inline. The naive solution is to make __set_hae() and set_hae() static inline but for reasons described in commit d559d4a24a3fe this breaks the generic kernel build. Instead, since this is architecture specific code, this patch hard wires in the architecture specific method f disabling and enabling interrupts. Occasionally the system gets into a state where the CMOS clock has gotten slightly ahead of current time and the periodic update of RTC fails. The message is a nuisance and repeats spamming the log. See: http://www.ntp.org/ntpfaq/NTP-s-trbl-spec.htm#Q-LINUX-SET-RTC-MMSS Rather than just removing the message, make it show only once and reduce severity since it indicates a normal and non urgent condition. Extend the perf_pmu_register() interface to allow for named and dynamic pmu types. Because we need to support the existing static types we cannot use dynamic types for everything, hence provide a type argument. If we want to enumerate the PMUs they need a name, provide one. 2010-11-26perf, arch: Cleanup perf-pmu init vs lockup-detectorPeter Zijlstra
The perf hardware pmu got initialized at various points in the boot, some before early_initcall() some after (notably arch_initcall). The problem is that the NMI lockup detector is ran from early_initcall() and expects the hardware pmu to be present. Sanitize this by moving all architecture hardware pmu implementations to initialize at early_initcall() and move the lockup detector to an explicit initcall right after that.
