git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/frederic/linux-dynticks into sched/core Pull full-dynticks (user-space execution is undisturbed and receives no timer IRQs) preparation changes that convert the cputime accounting code to be full-dynticks ready, from Frederic Weisbecker: "This implements the cputime accounting on full dynticks CPUs. Typical cputime stats infrastructure relies on the timer tick and its periodic polling on the CPU to account the amount of time spent by the CPUs and the tasks per high level domains such as userspace, kernelspace, guest, ... Now we are preparing to implement full dynticks capability on Linux for Real Time and HPC users who want full CPU isolation. This feature requires a cputime accounting that doesn't depend on the timer tick. To implement it, this new cputime infrastructure plugs into kernel/user/guest boundaries to take snapshots of cputime and flush these to the stats when needed. This performs pretty much like CONFIG_VIRT_CPU_ACCOUNTING except that context location and cputime snaphots are synchronized between write and read side such that the latter can safely retrieve the pending tickless cputime of a task and add it to its latest cputime snapshot to return the correct result to the user." 2013-01-27cputime: Generic on-demand virtual cputime accountingFrederic Weisbecker
If we want to stop the tick further idle, we need to be able to account the cputime without using the tick. Virtual based cputime accounting solves that problem by hooking into kernel/user boundaries. However implementing CONFIG_VIRT_CPU_ACCOUNTING require low level hooks and involves more overhead. But we already have a generic context tracking subsystem that is required for RCU needs by archs which plan to shut down the tick outside idle. This patch implements a generic virtual based cputime accounting that relies on these generic kernel/user hooks. There are some upsides of doing this: - This requires no arch code to implement CONFIG_VIRT_CPU_ACCOUNTING if context tracking is already built (already necessary for RCU in full tickless mode). - We can rely on the generic context tracking subsystem to dynamically (de)activate the hooks, so that we can switch anytime between virtual and tick based accounting. This way we don't have the overhead of the virtual accounting when the tick is running periodically. And one downside: - There is probably more overhead than a native virtual based cputime accounting. But this relies on hooks that are already set anyway. 2013-01-27cputime: Librarize per nsecs resolution cputime definitionsFrederic Weisbecker
The full dynticks cputime accounting that we'll soon introduce will rely on sched_clock(). And its clock can have a per nanosecond granularity. To prepare for this, we need to have a cputime_t implementation that has this precision. ia64 virtual cputime accounting already uses that granularity so all we need is to librarize its implementation in the asm generic headers. Also librarize the default per jiffy granularity cputime_t as well so that we can easily pick either implementation depending on the cputime accounting config we choose. 2013-01-18tty: Added a CONFIG_TTY option to allow removal of TTYJoe Millenbach
The option allows you to remove TTY and compile without errors. This saves space on systems that won't support TTY interfaces anyway. bloat-o-meter output is below. The bulk of this patch consists of Kconfig changes adding "depends on TTY" to various serial devices and similar drivers that require the TTY layer. Ideally, these dependencies would occur on a common intermediate symbol such as SERIO, but most drivers "select SERIO" rather than "depends on SERIO", and "select" does not respect dependencies. bloat-o-meter output comparing our previous minimal to new minimal by removing TTY. 2013-01-17sk-filter: Add ability to lock a socket filter programVincent Bernat
While a privileged program can open a raw socket, attach some restrictive filter and drop its privileges (or send the socket to an unprivileged program through some Unix socket), the filter can still be removed or modified by the unprivileged program. This commit adds a socket option to lock the filter (SO_LOCK_FILTER) preventing any modification of a socket filter program. This is similar to OpenBSD BIOCLOCK ioctl on bpf sockets, except even root is not allowed change/drop the filter. The state of the lock can be read with getsockopt(). No error is triggered if the state is not changed. -EPERM is returned when a user tries to remove the lock or to change/remove the filter while the lock is active. The check is done directly in sk_attach_filter() and sk_detach_filter() and does not affect only setsockopt() syscall. Signed-off-by: Vincent Bernat <bernat@luffy.cx> Signed-off-by: David S. 2013-01-15TTY: switch tty_flip_buffer_pushJiri Slaby

2013-01-10ACPICA: Update compilation environment settings.Lv Zheng
This patch does not affect the generation of the Linux binary. This patch decreases 300 lines of 20121018 divergence.diff. This patch updates architecture specific environment settings for compiling ACPICA as such enhancement already has been done in ACPICA. Note that the appended compiler default settings in the <acpi/platform/acenv.h> will deprecate some of the macros defined in the architecture specific <asm/acpi.h>. Thus two of the <asm/acpi.h> headers have been cleaned up in this patch accordingly. Signed-off-by: Lv Zheng <lv.zheng@intel.com> Signed-off-by: Rafael J. Wysocki <rafael.j.wysocki@intel.com>

The most important one is probably, that dma-debug now warns if a dma-handle is not checked with dma_mapping_error by the device driver. Besides that there are updates to the AMD IOMMU driver for refactor the IOMMU-Groups support and to make sure it does not trigger a hardware erratum. The OMAP changes (for which I pulled in a branch from Tony Lindgren's tree) have a conflict in linux-next with the arm-soc tree. Quite a bit of that stuff is actually shared with architecture trees; in such cases it's literally shared branch pulled by both, not a cherry-pick. A lot of ugliness and black magic is gone (-3KLoC total in this one): - kernel_thread()/kernel_execve()/sys_execve() redesign. We don't do syscalls from kernel anymore for either kernel_thread() or kernel_execve(): kernel_thread() is essentially clone(2) with callback run before we return to userland, the callbacks either never return or do successful do_execve() before returning. kernel_execve() is a wrapper for do_execve() - it doesn't need to do transition to user mode anymore. As a result kernel_thread() and kernel_execve() are arch-independent now - they live in kernel/fork.c and fs/exec.c resp. sys_execve() is also in fs/exec.c and it's completely architecture-independent. - daemonize() is gone, along with its parts in fs/*.c - struct pt_regs * is no longer passed to do_fork/copy_process/ copy_thread/do_execve/search_binary_handler/->load_binary/do_coredump. - sys_fork()/sys_vfork()/sys_clone() unified; some architectures still need wrappers (ones with callee-saved registers not saved in pt_regs on syscall entry), but the main part of those suckers is in kernel/fork.c now." * 'for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/viro/signal: (113 commits) do_coredump(): get rid of pt_regs argument print_fatal_signal(): get rid of pt_regs argument ptrace_signal(): get rid of unused arguments get rid of ptrace_signal_deliver() arguments new helper: signal_pt_regs() unify default ptrace_signal_deliver flagday: kill pt_regs argument of do_fork() death to idle_regs() don't pass regs to copy_process() flagday: don't pass regs to copy_thread() bfin: switch to generic vfork, get rid of pointless wrappers xtensa: switch to generic clone() openrisc: switch to use of generic fork and clone unicore32: switch to generic clone(2) score: switch to generic fork/vfork/clone c6x: sanitize copy_thread(), get rid of clone(2) wrapper, switch to generic clone() take sys_fork/sys_vfork/sys_clone prototypes to linux/syscalls.h mn10300: switch to generic fork/vfork/clone h8300: switch to generic fork/vfork/clone tile: switch to generic clone() ... git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip Pull scheduler updates from Ingo Molnar: "The biggest change affects group scheduling: we now track the runnable average on a per-task entity basis, allowing a smoother, exponential decay average based load/weight estimation instead of the previous binary on-the-runqueue/off-the-runqueue load weight method. This will inevitably disturb workloads that were in some sort of borderline balancing state or unstable equilibrium, so an eye has to be kept on regressions. For that reason the new load average is only limited to group scheduling (shares distribution) at the moment (which was also hurting the most from the prior, crude weight calculation and whose scheduling quality wins most from this change) - but we plan to extend this to regular SMP balancing as well in the future, which will simplify and speed up things a bit.
