git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/rusty/linux Pull module updates from Rusty Russell: "Main excitement here is Peter Zijlstra's lockless rbtree optimization to speed module address lookup. He found some abusers of the module lock doing that too. A little bit of parameter work here too; including Dan Streetman's breaking up the big param mutex so writing a parameter can load another module (yeah, really). Unfortunately that broke the usual suspects, !CONFIG_MODULES and !CONFIG_SYSFS, so those fixes were appended too" * tag 'modules-next-for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/rusty/linux: (26 commits) modules: only use mod->param_lock if CONFIG_MODULES param: fix module param locks when !CONFIG_SYSFS. rcu: merge fix for Convert ACCESS_ONCE() to READ_ONCE() and WRITE_ONCE() module: add per-module param_lock module: make perm const params: suppress unused variable error, warn once just in case code changes. modules: clarify CONFIG_MODULE_COMPRESS help, suggest 'N'. kernel/module.c: avoid ifdefs for sig_enforce declaration kernel/workqueue.c: remove ifdefs over wq_power_efficient kernel/params.c: export param_ops_bool_enable_only kernel/params.c: generalize bool_enable_only kernel/module.c: use generic module param operaters for sig_enforce kernel/params: constify struct kernel_param_ops uses sysfs: tightened sysfs permission checks module: Rework module_addr_{min,max} module: Use __module_address() for module_address_lookup() module: Make the mod_tree stuff conditional on PERF_EVENTS || TRACING module: Optimize __module_address() using a latched RB-tree rbtree: Implement generic latch_tree seqlock: Introduce raw_read_seqcount_latch() ...
2015-06-25um: Do not use stdin and stdout identifiers for struct membersHans-Werner Hilse
stdin, stdout and stderr are macros according to C89/C99. Thus do not use them as struct member identifiers to avoid bad results from macro expansion. Signed-off-by: Hans-Werner Hilse <hwhilse@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Richard Weinberger <richard@nod.at>
2015-06-23module: add per-module param_lockDan Streetman
Add a "param_lock" mutex to each module, and update params.c to use the correct built-in or module mutex while locking kernel params. Remove the kparam_block_sysfs_r/w() macros, replace them with direct calls to kernel_param_[un]lock(module). The kernel param code currently uses a single mutex to protect modification of any and all kernel params. While this generally works, there is one specific problem with it; a module callback function cannot safely load another module, i.e. with request_module() or even with indirect calls such as crypto_has_alg(). If the module to be loaded has any of its params configured (e.g. with a /etc/modprobe.d/* config file), then the attempt will result in a deadlock between the first module param callback waiting for modprobe, and modprobe trying to lock the single kernel param mutex to set the new module's param. This fixes that by using per-module mutexes, so that each individual module is protected against concurrent changes in its own kernel params, but is not blocked by changes to other module params. All built-in modules continue to use the built-in mutex, since they will always be loaded at runtime and references (e.g. request_module(), crypto_has_alg()) to them will never cause load-time param changing. This also simplifies the interface used by modules to block sysfs access to their params; while there are currently functions to block and unblock sysfs param access which are split up by read and write and expect a single kernel param to be passed, their actual operation is identical and applies to all params, not just the one passed to them; they simply lock and unlock the global param mutex. They are replaced with direct calls to kernel_param_[un]lock(THIS_MODULE), which locks THIS_MODULE's param_lock, or if the module is built-in, it locks the built-in mutex. 2015-05-31um: Stop abusing __KERNEL__Richard Weinberger

2014-11-05uml: Fix unsafe pid reference to foreground process groupPeter Hurley
Although the tty core maintains a pid reference for the foreground process group, if the foreground process group is changed that pid reference is dropped. 2013-09-07um: Cleanup SIGTERM handlingRichard Weinberger
Richard reported that some UML processes survive if the UML main process receives a SIGTERM. This issue was caused by a wrongly placed signal(SIGTERM, SIG_DFL) in init_new_thread_signals(). It disabled the UML exit handler accidently for some processes. The correct solution is to disable the fatal handler for all UML helper threads/processes. Such that last_ditch_exit() does not get called multiple times and all processes can exit due to SIGTERM. Reported-and-tested-by: Richard W.M. 2013-01-15TTY: switch tty_flip_buffer_pushJiri Slaby
Now, we start converting tty buffer functions to actually use tty_port. This will allow us to get rid of the need of tty in many call sites. git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/ebiederm/user-namespace Pull user namespace changes from Eric Biederman: "While small this set of changes is very significant with respect to containers in general and user namespaces in particular. The user space interface is now complete. This set of changes adds support for unprivileged users to create user namespaces and as a user namespace root to create other namespaces. The tyranny of supporting suid root preventing unprivileged users from using cool new kernel features is broken. This set of changes completes the work on setns, adding support for the pid, user, mount namespaces. This set of changes includes a bunch of basic pid namespace cleanups/simplifications. Of particular significance is the rework of the pid namespace cleanup so it no longer requires sending out tendrils into all kinds of unexpected cleanup paths for operation. At least one case of broken error handling is fixed by this cleanup. The files under /proc/<pid>/ns/ have been converted from regular files to magic symlinks which prevents incorrect caching by the VFS, ensuring the files always refer to the namespace the process is currently using and ensuring that the ptrace_mayaccess permission checks are always applied. The files under /proc/<pid>/ns/ have been given stable inode numbers so it is now possible to see if different processes share the same namespaces. Through the David Miller's net tree are changes to relax many of the permission checks in the networking stack to allowing the user namespace root to usefully use the networking stack. Similar changes for the mount namespace and the pid namespace are coming through my tree. Two small changes to add user namespace support were commited here adn in David Miller's -net tree so that I could complete the work on the /proc/<pid>/ns/ files in this tree. Work remains to make it safe to build user namespaces and 9p, afs, ceph, cifs, coda, gfs2, ncpfs, nfs, nfsd, ocfs2, and xfs so the Kconfig guard remains in place preventing that user namespaces from being built when any of those filesystems are enabled. 2012-11-19pidns: Use task_active_pid_ns where appropriateEric W. Biederman
The expressions tsk->nsproxy->pid_ns and task_active_pid_ns aka ns_of_pid(task_pid(tsk)) should have the same number of cache line misses with the practical difference that ns_of_pid(task_pid(tsk)) is released later in a processes life. Furthermore by using task_active_pid_ns it becomes trivial to write an unshare implementation for the the pid namespace. So I have used task_active_pid_ns everywhere I can. In fork since the pid has not yet been attached to the process I use ns_of_pid, to achieve the same effect. Signed-off-by: Eric W. Biederman <ebiederm@xmission.com>
2012-11-15TTY: call tty_port_destroy in the rest of driversJiri Slaby
After commit "TTY: move tty buffers to tty_port", the tty buffers are not freed in some drivers. This is because tty_port_destructor is not called whenever a tty_port is freed. This was an assumption I counted with but was unfortunately untrue. So fix the drivers to fulfil this assumption. To be sure, the TTY buffers (and later some stuff) are gone along with the tty_port, we have to call tty_port_destroy at tear-down places. 2012-10-02Merge branch 'for-linus' of ↵Linus Torvalds
git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/viro/vfs Pull vfs update from Al Viro: - big one - consolidation of descriptor-related logics; almost all of that is moved to fs/file.c (BTW, I'm seriously tempted to rename the result to fd.c. As it is, we have a situation when file_table.c is about handling of struct file and file.c is about handling of descriptor tables; the reasons are historical - file_table.c used to be about a static array of struct file we used to have way back). A lot of stray ends got cleaned up and converted to saner primitives, disgusting mess in android/binder.c is still disgusting, but at least doesn't poke so much in descriptor table guts anymore. A bunch of relatively minor races got fixed in process, plus an ext4 struct file leak. - related thing - fget_light() partially unuglified; see fdget() in there (and yes, it generates the code as good as we used to have). - also related - bits of Cyrill's procfs stuff that got entangled into that work; _not_ all of it, just the initial move to fs/proc/fd.c and switch of fdinfo to seq_file. - Alex's fs/coredump.c spiltoff - the same story, had been easier to take that commit than mess with conflicts. The rest is a separate pile, this was just a mechanical code movement. - a few misc patches all over the place. Not all for this cycle, there'll be more (and quite a few currently sit in akpm's tree)." Fix up trivial conflicts in the android binder driver, and some fairly simple conflicts due to two different changes to the sock_alloc_file() interface ("take descriptor handling from sock_alloc_file() to callers" vs "net: Providing protocol type via system.sockprotoname xattr of /proc/PID/fd entries" adding a dentry name to the socket) * 'for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/viro/vfs: (72 commits) MAX_LFS_FILESIZE should be a loff_t compat: fs: Generic compat_sys_sendfile implementation fs: push rcu_barrier() from deactivate_locked_super() to filesystems btrfs: reada_extent doesn't need kref for refcount coredump: move core dump functionality into its own file coredump: prevent double-free on an error path in core dumper usb/gadget: fix misannotations fcntl: fix misannotations ceph: don't abuse d_delete() on failure exits hypfs: ->d_parent is never NULL or negative vfs: delete surplus inode NULL check switch simple cases of fget_light to fdget new helpers: fdget()/fdput() switch o2hb_region_dev_write() to fget_light() proc_map_files_readdir(): don't bother with grabbing files make get_file() return its argument vhost_set_vring(): turn pollstart/pollstop into bool switch prctl_set_mm_exe_file() to fget_light() switch xfs_find_handle() to fget_light() switch xfs_swapext() to fget_light() ...

2012-08-13TTY: use tty_port_register_deviceJiri Slaby
Currently we have no way to assign tty->port while performing tty installation. There are two ways to provide the link tty_struct => tty_port. Either by calling tty_port_install from tty->ops->install or tty_port_register_device called instead of tty_register_device when the device is being set up after connected. In this patch we modify most of the drivers to do the latter. When the drivers use tty_register_device and we have tty_port already, we switch to tty_port_register_device. So we have the tty_struct => tty_port link for free for those.
