2007-11-13[NET] random : secure_tcp_sequence_number should not assume CONFIG_KTIME_SCALAREric Dumazet
All 32 bits machines but i386 dont have CONFIG_KTIME_SCALAR. On these machines, ktime.tv64 is more than 4 times the (correct) result given by ktime_to_ns() Again on these machines, using ktime_get_real().tv64 >> 6 give a 32bits rollover every 64 seconds, which is not wanted (less than the 120 s MSL) Using ktime_to_ns() is the portable way to get nsecs from a ktime, and have correct code. 2007-10-01[TCP]: secure_tcp_sequence_number() should not use a too fast clockEric Dumazet
TCP V4 sequence numbers are 32bits, and RFC 793 assumed a 250 KHz clock. In order to follow network speed increase, we can use a faster clock, but we should limit this clock so that the delay between two rollovers is greater than MSL (TCP Maximum Segment Lifetime : 2 minutes) Choosing a 64 nsec clock should be OK, since the rollovers occur every 274 seconds. 2007-07-19random: fix bound check ordering (CVE-2007-3105)Matt Mackall
If root raised the default wakeup threshold over the size of the output pool, the pool transfer function could overflow the stack with RNG bytes, causing a DoS or potential privilege escalation. 2007-06-16random: fix output buffer foldingMatt Mackall
(As reported by linux@horizon.com) Folding is done to minimize the theoretical possibility of systematic weakness in the particular bits of the SHA1 hash output. The result of this bug is that 16 out of 80 bits are un-folded. Without a major new vulnerability being found in SHA1, this is harmless, but still worth fixing. 2007-04-25[NET]: random functions can use nsec resolution instead of usecEric Dumazet
In order to get more randomness for secure_tcpv6_sequence_number(), secure_tcp_sequence_number(), secure_dccp_sequence_number() functions, we can use the high resolution time services, providing nanosec resolution. 2007-02-12[PATCH] mark struct file_operations const 3Arjan van de Ven
Many struct file_operations in the kernel can be "const". Marking them const moves these to the .rodata section, which avoids false sharing with potential dirty data. 2006-11-22WorkStruct: Pass the work_struct pointer instead of context dataDavid Howells
Pass the work_struct pointer to the work function rather than context data. The work function can use container_of() to work out the data. For the cases where the container of the work_struct may go away the moment the pending bit is cleared, it is made possible to defer the release of the structure by deferring the clearing of the pending bit. To make this work, an extra flag is introduced into the management side of the work_struct. This governs auto-release of the structure upon execution. Ordinarily, the work queue executor would release the work_struct for further scheduling or deallocation by clearing the pending bit prior to jumping to the work function. This means that, unless the driver makes some guarantee itself that the work_struct won't go away, the work function may not access anything else in the work_struct or its container lest they be deallocated.. This is a problem if the auxiliary data is taken away (as done by the last patch). However, if the pending bit is *not* cleared before jumping to the work function, then the work function *may* access the work_struct and its container with no problems. But then the work function must itself release the work_struct by calling work_release(). In most cases, automatic release is fine, so this is the default. Special initiators exist for the non-auto-release case (ending in _NAR). Signed-Off-By: David Howells <dhowells@redhat.com>
2006-11-22WorkStruct: Separate delayable and non-delayable events.David Howells
Separate delayable work items from non-delayable work items be splitting them into a separate structure (delayed_work), which incorporates a work_struct and the timer_list removed from work_struct. The work_struct struct is huge, and this limits it's usefulness. On a 64-bit architecture it's nearly 100 bytes in size. This reduces that by half for the non-delayable type of event. 2006-09-30[PATCH] BLOCK: Make it possible to disable the block layer [try #6]David Howells
Make it possible to disable the block layer. Not all embedded devices require it, some can make do with just JFFS2, NFS, ramfs, etc - none of which require the block layer to be present. This patch does the following: (*) Introduces CONFIG_BLOCK to disable the block layer, buffering and blockdev support. (*) Adds dependencies on CONFIG_BLOCK to any configuration item that controls an item that uses the block layer. This includes: (*) Block I/O tracing. (*) Disk partition code. (*) All filesystems that are block based, eg: Ext3, ReiserFS, ISOFS. (*) The SCSI layer. As far as I can tell, even SCSI chardevs use the block layer to do scheduling. Some drivers that use SCSI facilities - such as USB storage - end up disabled indirectly from this. (*) Various block-based device drivers, such as IDE and the old CDROM drivers. (*) MTD blockdev handling and FTL. (*) JFFS - which uses set_bdev_super(), something it could avoid doing by taking a leaf out of JFFS2's book. (*) Makes most of the contents of linux/blkdev.h, linux/buffer_head.h and linux/elevator.h contingent on CONFIG_BLOCK being set. sector_div() is, however, still used in places, and so is still available. (*) Also made contingent are the contents of linux/mpage.h, linux/genhd.h and parts of linux/fs.h. (*) Makes a number of files in fs/ contingent on CONFIG_BLOCK. (*) Makes mm/bounce.c (bounce buffering) contingent on CONFIG_BLOCK. (*) set_page_dirty() doesn't call __set_page_dirty_buffers() if CONFIG_BLOCK is not enabled. (*) fs/no-block.c is created to hold out-of-line stubs and things that are required when CONFIG_BLOCK is not set: (*) Default blockdev file operations (to give error ENODEV on opening). (*) Makes some /proc changes: (*) /proc/devices does not list any blockdevs. (*) /proc/diskstats and /proc/partitions are contingent on CONFIG_BLOCK. (*) Makes some compat ioctl handling contingent on CONFIG_BLOCK. (*) If CONFIG_BLOCK is not defined, makes sys_quotactl() return -ENODEV if given command other than Q_SYNC or if a special device is specified. (*) In init/do_mounts.c, no reference is made to the blockdev routines if CONFIG_BLOCK is not defined. This does not prohibit NFS roots or JFFS2. (*) The bdflush, ioprio_set and ioprio_get syscalls can now be absent (return error ENOSYS by way of cond_syscall if so). (*) The seclvl_bd_claim() and seclvl_bd_release() security calls do nothing if CONFIG_BLOCK is not set, since they can't then happen. 2005-07-07[PATCH] mostly_read data sectionChristoph Lameter
Add a new section called ".data.read_mostly" for data items that are read frequently and rarely written to like cpumaps etc. If these maps are placed in the .data section then these frequenly read items may end up in cachelines with data is is frequently updated. In that case all processors in an SMP system must needlessly reload the cachelines again and again containing elements of those frequently used variables. The ability to share these cachelines will allow each cpu in an SMP system to keep local copies of those shared cachelines thereby optimizing performance. Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
