Based on earlier work by Jon Smirl and Jochen Friedrich. This patch allows new-style i2c chip drivers to have alias names using the official kernel aliasing system and MODULE_DEVICE_TABLE(). 2007-07-17Freezer: make kernel threads nonfreezable by defaultRafael J. Wysocki
Currently, the freezer treats all tasks as freezable, except for the kernel threads that explicitly set the PF_NOFREEZE flag for themselves. This approach is problematic, since it requires every kernel thread to either set PF_NOFREEZE explicitly, or call try_to_freeze(), even if it doesn't care for the freezing of tasks at all. It seems better to only require the kernel threads that want to or need to be frozen to use some freezer-related code and to remove any freezer-related code from the other (nonfreezable) kernel threads, which is done in this patch. The patch causes all kernel threads to be nonfreezable by default (ie. to have PF_NOFREEZE set by default) and introduces the set_freezable() function that should be called by the freezable kernel threads in order to unset PF_NOFREEZE. It also makes all of the currently freezable kernel threads call set_freezable(), so it shouldn't cause any (intentional) change of behaviour to appear. 2006-09-26V4L/DVB (4624): Tvaudio: Replaced kernel_thread() with kthread_run()Cedric Le Goater
Replaced kernel_thread() with kthread_run() since kernel_thread() is deprecated in drivers/modules. Removed the completion and the wait queue which are now useless with kthread. Also removed the allow_signal() call as signals don't apply to kernel threads. Fixed a small race condition when thread is stopped. Please check if the timer vs. thread still works fine without the wait queue. Add a new audio mode V4L2_TUNER_MODE_LANG1_LANG2 (used by VIDIOC_G/S_TUNER). This mode allows the user to select both languages of a bilingual transmission, one language on the left, one on the right audio channel. If there is no bilingual transmission, or it is not supported, then this mode should act like V4L2_TUNER_MODE_STEREO. This mode is introduced for PVR-like drivers where it is useful to be able to record both languages of a bilingual broadcast. Cleanup audio input handling in bttv and tvaudio: - inputs were specified that were never used - mute was handled as a special input which led to confusing code - confusing naming made it difficult to see if the setting was for i2c or gpio. The old audiochip.h input names moved to tvaudio.h. Currently this is used both by tvaudio and msp3400 until the msp3400 implements the new msp3400-specific inputs. Detect in bttv the tvaudio and msp3400 i2c clients and use these client pointers to set the inputs directly instead of broadcasting the command. Removed AUDC_SET_INPUT. Now replaced by VIDIOC_S_AUDIO. This will be replaced again later by the new ROUTING commands. Removed VIDIOC_G_AUDIO implementations in i2c drivers: this command is a user level command and not to be used internally. It wasn't called at all anyway. Just about every i2c chip driver sets the I2C_DF_NOTIFY flag, so we can simply make it the default and drop the flag. If any driver really doesn't want to be notified when i2c adapters are added, that driver can simply omit to set .attach_adapter. 2005-09-05[PATCH] I2C: Drop I2C_DEVNAME and i2c_clientnameJean Delvare
I2C_DEVNAME and i2c_clientname were introduced in 2.5.68 [1] to help media/video driver authors who wanted their code to be compatible with both Linux 2.4 and 2.6. The cause of the incompatibility has gone since [2], so I think we can get rid of them, as they tend to make the code harder to read and longer to preprocess/compile for no more benefit. I'd hope nobody seriously attempts to keep media/video driver compatible across Linux trees anymore, BTW. In theory, there should be no more users of I2C_ALGO_* at this point. However, it happens that several drivers were using I2C_ALGO_* for adapter ids, so we need to correct these before we can get rid of all the I2C_ALGO_* definitions. Note that this also fixes a bug in media/video/tvaudio.c: /* don't attach on saa7146 based cards, because dedicated drivers are used */ if ((adap->id & I2C_ALGO_SAA7146)) return 0; This test was plain broken, as it would succeed for many more adapters than just the saa7146: any those id would share at least one bit with the saa7146 id. We are really lucky that the few other adapters we want this driver to work with did not fulfill that condition. 2005-06-21[PATCH] I2C: Kill address ranges in non-sensors i2c chip driversJean Delvare
Some months ago, you killed the address ranges mechanism from all sensors i2c chip drivers (both the module parameters and the in-code address lists). I think it was a very good move, as the ranges can easily be replaced by individual addresses, and this allowed for significant cleanups in the i2c core (let alone the impressive size shrink for all these drivers). Unfortunately you did not do the same for non-sensors i2c chip drivers. These need the address ranges even less, so we could get rid of the ranges here as well for another significant i2c core cleanup. Here comes a patch which does just that. Since the process is exactly the same as what you did for the other drivers set already, I did not split this one in parts. A documentation update is included. The change saves 308 bytes in the i2c core, and an average 1382 bytes for chip drivers which use I2C_CLIENT_INSMOD, 126 bytes for those which do not. This change is required if we want to merge the sensors and non-sensors i2c code (and we want to do this).
