2011-08-11*sonic/natsemi/ns83829: Move the National Semi-conductor driversJeff Kirsher
Move the National Semi-conductor drivers into drivers/net/ethernet/natsemi/ and make the necessary Kconfig and Makefile changes. Also moved the 8390 (National Semi-conductor) devices as a sub-menu of National Semi-conductor devices. - moved the ibmlana driver as well into this directory since it is a "SONIC" driver CC: Alfred Arnold <alfred.arnold@lancom.de> CC: Thomas Bogendoerfer <tsbogend@alpha.franken.de> CC: Harald Welte <laforge@gnumonks.org> CC: Tim Hockin <thockin@hockin.org> CC: <linux-ns83820@kvack.org> CC: Kevin Chea <kchea@yahoo.com> CC: Marc Gauthier <marc@linux-xtensa.org> CC: Chris Zankel <chris@zankel.net> Signed-off-by: Jeff Kirsher <jeffrey.t.kirsher@intel.com> Acked-by: Marc Gauthier <marc@tensilica.com>
2010-05-10net: trans_start cleanupsEric Dumazet
Now that core network takes care of trans_start updates, dont do it in drivers themselves, if possible. Drivers can avoid one cache miss (on dev->trans_start) in their start_xmit() handler. Exceptions are NETIF_F_LLTX drivers Signed-off-by: Eric Dumazet <eric.dumazet@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
2010-04-03net: convert multicast list to list_headJiri Pirko
Converts the list and the core manipulating with it to be the same as uc_list. +uses two functions for adding/removing mc address (normal and "global" variant) instead of a function parameter. +removes dev_mcast.c completely. +exposes netdev_hw_addr_list_* macros along with __hw_addr_* functions for manipulation with lists on a sandbox (used in bonding and 80211 drivers) Signed-off-by: Jiri Pirko <jpirko@redhat.com> Signed-off-by: David S. 2010-02-12net: use netdev_mc_count and netdev_mc_empty when appropriateJiri Pirko
This patch replaces dev->mc_count in all drivers (hopefully I didn't miss anything). Used spatch and did small tweaks and conding style changes when it was suitable. Jirka Signed-off-by: Jiri Pirko <jpirko@redhat.com> Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
2009-07-05net: convert remaining non-symbolic return values in ndo_start_xmit() functionsPatrick McHardy
This patch converts the remaining occurences of raw return values to their symbolic counterparts in ndo_start_xmit() functions that were missed by the previous automatic conversion. Additionally code that assumed the symbolic value of NETDEV_TX_OK to be zero is changed to explicitly use NETDEV_TX_OK. Signed-off-by: Patrick McHardy <kaber@trash.net> Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>

2009-06-13net: use symbolic values for ndo_start_xmit() return codesPatrick McHardy
Convert magic values 1 and -1 to NETDEV_TX_BUSY and NETDEV_TX_LOCKED respectively. 0 (NETDEV_TX_OK) is not changed to keep the noise down, except in very few cases where its in direct proximity to one of the other values. 2008-11-03drivers/net: Kill now superfluous ->last_rx stores.David S. Miller
The generic packet receive code takes care of setting netdev->last_rx when necessary, for the sake of the bonding ARP monitor. Drivers need not do it any more. Some cases had to be skipped over because the drivers were making use of the ->last_rx value themselves. Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
2007-05-04SONIC interrupt handlingFinn Thain
Install the built-in macsonic interrupt handler on both IRQs when using via_alt_mapping. Otherwise the rare interrupt that still comes from the nubus slot will wedge the nubus. $ cat /proc/interrupts auto 2: 89176 via2 auto 3: 744367 sonic auto 4: 0 scc auto 6: 318363 via1 auto 7: 0 NMI mac 9: 119413 framebuffer vbl mac 10: 1971 ADB mac 14: 198517 timer mac 17: 89104 nubus mac 19: 72 Mac ESP SCSI mac 56: 629 sonic mac 62: 1142593 ide0 Version 1 of this patch had a bug where a nubus sonic card would register two interrupt handlers. Only a built-in sonic needs both. Versions 2 and 3 needed some cleanups, as Raylynn Knight and Christoph Hellwig pointed out (thanks). 2006-10-05IRQ: Maintain regs pointer globally rather than passing to IRQ handlersDavid Howells
Maintain a per-CPU global "struct pt_regs *" variable which can be used instead of passing regs around manually through all ~1800 interrupt handlers in the Linux kernel. The regs pointer is used in few places, but it potentially costs both stack space and code to pass it around. On the FRV arch, removing the regs parameter from all the genirq function results in a 20% speed up of the IRQ exit path (ie: from leaving timer_interrupt() to leaving do_IRQ()). Where appropriate, an arch may override the generic storage facility and do something different with the variable. On FRV, for instance, the address is maintained in GR28 at all times inside the kernel as part of general exception handling. Having looked over the code, it appears that the parameter may be handed down through up to twenty or so layers of functions. Consider a USB character device attached to a USB hub, attached to a USB controller that posts its interrupts through a cascaded auxiliary interrupt controller. A character device driver may want to pass regs to the sysrq handler through the input layer which adds another few layers of parameter passing. I've build this code with allyesconfig for x86_64 and i386. I've runtested the main part of the code on FRV and i386, though I can't test most of the drivers. I've also done partial conversion for powerpc and MIPS - these at least compile with minimal configurations. This will affect all archs. Mostly the changes should be relatively easy. Take do_IRQ(), store the regs pointer at the beginning, saving the old one: struct pt_regs *old_regs = set_irq_regs(regs); And put the old one back at the end: set_irq_regs(old_regs); Don't pass regs through to generic_handle_irq() or __do_IRQ(). In timer_interrupt(), this sort of change will be necessary: - update_process_times(user_mode(regs)); - profile_tick(CPU_PROFILING, regs); + update_process_times(user_mode(get_irq_regs())); + profile_tick(CPU_PROFILING); I'd like to move update_process_times()'s use of get_irq_regs() into itself, except that i386, alone of the archs, uses something other than user_mode(). Some notes on the interrupt handling in the drivers: (*) input_dev() is now gone entirely. The regs pointer is no longer stored in the input_dev struct. (*) finish_unlinks() in drivers/usb/host/ohci-q.c needs checking. It does something different depending on whether it's been supplied with a regs pointer or not. (*) Various IRQ handler function pointers have been moved to type irq_handler_t. 2006-06-23[NET]: Avoid allocating skb in skb_padHerbert Xu
First of all it is unnecessary to allocate a new skb in skb_pad since the existing one is not shared. More importantly, our hard_start_xmit interface does not allow a new skb to be allocated since that breaks requeueing. This patch uses pskb_expand_head to expand the existing skb and linearize it if needed. Actually, someone should sift through every instance of skb_pad on a non-linear skb as they do not fit the reasons why this was originally created. Incidentally, this fixes a minor bug when the skb is cloned (tcpdump, TCP, etc.). As it is skb_pad will simply write over a cloned skb. Because of the position of the write it is unlikely to cause problems but still it's best if we don't do it. Signed-off-by: Herbert Xu <herbert@gondor.apana.org.au> Signed-off-by: David S. 2005-08-23[PATCH] macsonic/jazzsonic network drivers updateFinn Thain
The purpose of this patch: - Adopt the DMA API (jazzsonic, macsonic & core driver). - Adopt the driver model (macsonic). This part was cribbed from jazzsonic. As a consequence, macsonic once again works as a module. Driver model is also used by the DMA calls. - Support 16 bit cards (macsonic & core driver, also affects jazzsonic) This code was adapted from the mac68k linux 2.2 kernel, where it has languished for a long time. - Support more 32-bit mac cards (macsonic) Also from mac68k repo. - Zero-copy buffer handling (core driver) Provides a nice performance improvement. The new algorithm incidentally helped to replace the old Jazz DMA code. The patch was tested on a variety of macs (several 32-bit quadra built-in NICs, a 16-bit LC PDS NIC and a 16-bit comm-slot NIC), and also on MIPS Jazz. 2005-04-16Linux-2.6.12-rc2v2.6.12-rc2Linus Torvalds
Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
