Update the USB core to deal with USB 3.0 hubs. These hubs have a slightly different hub descriptor than USB 2.0 hubs, with a fixed (rather than variable length) size. Change the USB core's hub descriptor to have a union for the last fields that differ. Change the host controller drivers that access those last fields (DeviceRemovable and PortPowerCtrlMask) to use the union. Translate the new version of the hub port status field into the old version that khubd understands. (Note: we need to fix it to translate the roothub's port status once we stop converting it to USB 2.0 hub status internally.) Add new code to handle link state change status. Send out new control messages that are needed for USB 3.0 hubs, like Set Hub Depth. This patch is a modified version of the original patch submitted by John Youn. It's updated to reflect the removal of the "bitmap" #define, and change the hub descriptor accesses of a couple new host controller drivers. 2011-03-13USB: Remove bitmap #define from hcd.hSarah Sharp
Using a #define to redefine a common variable name is a bad thing, especially when the #define is in a header. include/linux/usb/hcd.h redefined bitmap to DeviceRemovable to avoid typing a long field in the hub descriptor. This has unintended side effects for files like drivers/usb/core/devio.c that include that file, since another header included after hcd.h has different variables named bitmap. Remove the bitmap #define and replace instances of it in the host controller code. Cleanup the spaces around function calls and square brackets while we're at it. 2011-01-20staging: usbip: vhci: handle EAGAIN from SO_RCVTIMEOMax Vozeler
If there is a receive timeout without any active requests, we can tell the connection was idle and ignore the timeout. If there are active requests for which we expect to receive a reply we close the connection. This makes it possible to set an upper bound on the time a usbip device may be unresponsive. This is a workaround for the lack of heart-beat messages in the USBIP protocol. Extending the protocol would break compatibility with all previous stub versions, so this seems like the lesser evil. In the vhci_urb_dequeue() function the TCP connection is checked twice. Each time when the TCP connection is closed the URB is unlinked and given back. 2010-10-21BKL: introduce CONFIG_BKL.Arnd Bergmann
With all the patches we have queued in the BKL removal tree, only a few dozen modules are left that actually rely on the BKL, and even there are lots of low-hanging fruit. We need to decide what to do about them, this patch illustrates one of the options: Every user of the BKL is marked as 'depends on BKL' in Kconfig, and the CONFIG_BKL becomes a user-visible option. If it gets disabled, no BKL using module can be built any more and the BKL code itself is compiled out. The one exception is file locking, which is practically always enabled and does a 'select BKL' instead. This effectively forces CONFIG_BKL to be enabled until we have solved the fs/lockd mess and can apply the patch that removes the BKL from fs/locks.c. Signed-off-by: Arnd Bergmann <arnd@arndb.de>

2010-09-21staging: usbip: Process event flags without delayMax Vozeler
The way the event handler works can cause it to delay events until eventual wakeup for another event. For example, on device detach (vhci): - Write to sysfs detach file -> usbip_event_add(VDEV_EVENT_DOWN) -> wakeup() #define VDEV_EVENT_DOWN (USBIP_EH_SHUTDOWN | USBIP_EH_RESET). - Event thread wakes up and passes the event to event_handler() to process. - It processes and clears the USBIP_EH_SHUTDOWN flag then returns. - The outer event loop (event_handler_loop()) calls wait_event_interruptible(). The processing of the second flag which is part of VDEV_EVENT_DOWN (USBIP_EH_RESET) did not happen yet. It is delayed until the next event. This means the ->reset callback may not happen for a long time (if ever), leaving the usbip port in a weird state which prevents its reuse. This patch changes the handler to process all flags before waiting for another wakeup. I have verified this change to fix a problem which prevented reattach of a usbip device. It also helps for socket errors which missed the RESET as well. The delayed event processing also affects the stub side of usbip and the error handling there. 2010-08-10USB: convert usb_hcd bitfields into atomic flagsAlan Stern
This patch (as1393) converts several of the single-bit fields in struct usb_hcd to atomic flags. This is for safety's sake; not all CPUs can update bitfield values atomically, and these flags are used in multiple contexts. The flag fields that are set only during registration or removal can remain as they are, since non-atomic accesses at those times will not cause any problems. (Strictly speaking, the authorized_default flag should become atomic as well. I didn't bother with it because it gets changed only via sysfs. It can be done later, if anyone wants.) The usbcore headers: hcd.h and hub.h are shared between usbcore, HCDs and a couple of other drivers (e.g. USBIP modules). So, it makes sense to move them into a more public location and to cleanup dependency of those modules on kernel internal headers. When detaching a port from the client side (usbip --detach 0), the event thread, on the server side, is going to deadlock. The "eh" server thread is getting USBIP_EH_RESET event and calls: -> stub_device_reset() -> usb_reset_device() the USB framework is then calling back _in the same "eh" thread_ : -> stub_disconnect() -> usbip_stop_eh() -> wait_for_completion() the "eh" thread is being asleep forever, waiting for its own completion. implicit slab.h inclusion from percpu.h percpu.h is included by sched.h and module.h and thus ends up being included when building most .c files. percpu.h includes slab.h which in turn includes gfp.h making everything defined by the two files universally available and complicating inclusion dependencies. percpu.h -> slab.h dependency is about to be removed. Prepare for this change by updating users of gfp and slab facilities include those headers directly instead of assuming availability. As this conversion needs to touch large number of source files, the following script is used as the basis of conversion. http://userweb.kernel.org/~tj/misc/slabh-sweep.py The script does the followings. * Scan files for gfp and slab usages and update includes such that only the necessary includes are there. ie. if only gfp is used, gfp.h, if slab is used, slab.h. * When the script inserts a new include, it looks at the include blocks and try to put the new include such that its order conforms to its surrounding. It's put in the include block which contains core kernel includes, in the same order that the rest are ordered - alphabetical, Christmas tree, rev-Xmas-tree or at the end if there doesn't seem to be any matching order. * If the script can't find a place to put a new include (mostly because the file doesn't have fitting include block), it prints out an error message indicating which .h file needs to be added to the file. The conversion was done in the following steps. 1. The initial automatic conversion of all .c files updated slightly over 4000 files, deleting around 700 includes and adding ~480 gfp.h and ~3000 slab.h inclusions. The script emitted errors for ~400 files. 2. Each error was manually checked. Some didn't need the inclusion, some needed manual addition while adding it to implementation .h or embedding .c file was more appropriate for others. This step added inclusions to around 150 files. 3. The script was run again and the output was compared to the edits from #2 to make sure no file was left behind. 4. Several build tests were done and a couple of problems were fixed. e.g. lib/decompress_*.c used malloc/free() wrappers around slab APIs requiring slab.h to be added manually. 5. The script was run on all .h files but without automatically editing them as sprinkling gfp.h and slab.h inclusions around .h files could easily lead to inclusion dependency hell. Most gfp.h inclusion directives were ignored as stuff from gfp.h was usually wildly available and often used in preprocessor macros. Each slab.h inclusion directive was examined and added manually as necessary. 6. percpu.h was updated not to include slab.h. 7. Build test were done on the following configurations and failures were fixed. CONFIG_GCOV_KERNEL was turned off for all tests (as my distributed build env didn't work with gcov compiles) and a few more options had to be turned off depending on archs to make things build (like ipr on powerpc/64 which failed due to missing writeq). * x86 and x86_64 UP and SMP allmodconfig and a custom test config. * powerpc and powerpc64 SMP allmodconfig * sparc and sparc64 SMP allmodconfig * ia64 SMP allmodconfig * s390 SMP allmodconfig * alpha SMP allmodconfig * um on x86_64 SMP allmodconfig 8. percpu.h modifications were reverted so that it could be applied as a separate patch and serve as bisection point. Given the fact that I had only a couple of failures from tests on step 6, I'm fairly confident about the coverage of this conversion patch. If there is a breakage, it's likely to be something in one of the arch headers which should be easily discoverable easily on most builds of the specific arch.
