This will result in balloon_process() no longer be triggered when ballooned pages are freed in batches. 2019-12-01mm/memory_hotplug: make add_memory() take the device_hotplug_lockDavid Hildenbrand
[ Upstream commit 8df1d0e4a265f25dc1e7e7624ccdbcb4a6630c89 ] add_memory() currently does not take the device_hotplug_lock, however is aleady called under the lock from arch/powerpc/platforms/pseries/hotplug-memory.c drivers/acpi/acpi_memhotplug.c to synchronize against CPU hot-remove and similar. In general, we should hold the device_hotplug_lock when adding memory to synchronize against online/offline request (e.g. from user space) - which already resulted in lock inversions due to device_lock() and mem_hotplug_lock - see 30467e0b3be ("mm, hotplug: fix concurrent memory hot-add deadlock"). add_memory()/add_memory_resource() will create memory block devices, so this really feels like the right thing to do. Holding the device_hotplug_lock makes sure that a memory block device can really only be accessed (e.g. via .online/.state) from user space, once the memory has been fully added to the system. The lock is not held yet in drivers/xen/balloon.c arch/powerpc/platforms/powernv/memtrace.c drivers/s390/char/sclp_cmd.c drivers/hv/hv_balloon.c So, let's either use the locked variants or take the lock. Don't export add_memory_resource(), as it once was exported to be used by XEN, which is never built as a module. If somebody requires it, we also have to export a locked variant (as device_hotplug_lock is never exported). 2019-10-11xen/pci: reserve MCFG areas earlierIgor Druzhinin
[ Upstream commit a4098bc6eed5e31e0391bcc068e61804c98138df ] If MCFG area is not reserved in E820, Xen by default will defer its usage until Dom0 registers it explicitly after ACPI parser recognizes it as a reserved resource in DSDT. Having it reserved in E820 is not mandatory according to "PCI Firmware Specification, rev 3.2" (par. 4.1.2) and firmware is free to keep a hole in E820 in that place. Xen doesn't know what exactly is inside this hole since it lacks full ACPI view of the platform therefore it's potentially harmful to access MCFG region without additional checks as some machines are known to provide inconsistent information on the size of the region. Now xen_mcfg_late() runs after acpi_init() which is too late as some basic PCI enumeration starts exactly there as well. Trying to register a device prior to MCFG reservation causes multiple problems with PCIe extended capability initializations in Xen (e.g. SR-IOV VF BAR sizing). There are no convenient hooks for us to subscribe to so register MCFG areas earlier upon the first invocation of xen_add_device(). It should be safe to do once since all the boot time buses must have their MCFG areas in MCFG table already and we don't support PCI bus hot-plug. 2019-08-06xen/swiotlb: fix condition for calling xen_destroy_contiguous_region()Juergen Gross

The condition in xen_swiotlb_free_coherent() for deciding whether to call xen_destroy_contiguous_region() is wrong: in case the region to be freed is not contiguous calling xen_destroy_contiguous_region() is the wrong thing to do: it would result in inconsistent mappings of multiple PFNs to the same MFN. This will lead to various strange crashes or data corruption. Instead of calling xen_destroy_contiguous_region() in that case a warning should be issued as that situation should never occur. 2019-07-31xen/events: fix binding user event channels to cpusJuergen Gross

When binding an interdomain event channel to a vcpu via IOCTL_EVTCHN_BIND_INTERDOMAIN not only the event channel needs to be bound, but the affinity of the associated IRQi must be changed, too. Otherwise the IRQ and the event channel won't be moved to another vcpu in case the original vcpu they were bound to is going offline. 2019-07-31xen: let alloc_xenballooned_pages() fail if not enough memory freeJuergen Gross
commit a1078e821b605813b63bf6bca414a85f804d5c66 upstream. Instead of trying to allocate pages with GFP_USER in add_ballooned_pages() check the available free memory via si_mem_available(). GFP_USER is far less limiting memory exhaustion than the test via si_mem_available(). This will avoid dom0 running out of memory due to excessive foreign page mappings especially on ARM and on x86 in PVH mode, as those don't have a pre-ballooned area which can be used for foreign mappings. As the normal ballooning suffers from the same problem don't balloon down more than si_mem_available() pages in one iteration. At the same time limit the default maximum number of retries. 2019-06-11fs: stream_open - opener for stream-like files so that read and write can ↵Kirill Smelkov
run simultaneously without deadlock commit 10dce8af34226d90fa56746a934f8da5dcdba3df upstream. Commit 9c225f2655e3 ("vfs: atomic f_pos accesses as per POSIX") added locking for file.f_pos access and in particular made concurrent read and write not possible - now both those functions take f_pos lock for the whole run, and so if e.g. a read is blocked waiting for data, write will deadlock waiting for that read to complete. This caused regression for stream-like files where previously read and write could run simultaneously, but after that patch could not do so anymore. See e.g. commit 581d21a2d02a ("xenbus: fix deadlock on writes to /proc/xen/xenbus") which fixes such regression for particular case of /proc/xen/xenbus. The patch that added f_pos lock in 2014 did so to guarantee POSIX thread safety for read/write/lseek and added the locking to file descriptors of all regular files. In 2014 that thread-safety problem was not new as it was already discussed earlier in 2006. However even though 2006'th version of Linus's patch was adding f_pos locking "only for files that are marked seekable with FMODE_LSEEK (thus avoiding the stream-like objects like pipes and sockets)", the 2014 version - the one that actually made it into the tree as 9c225f2655e3 - is doing so irregardless of whether a file is seekable or not. The reason that it did so is, probably, that there are many files that are marked non-seekable, but e.g. their read implementation actually depends on knowing current position to correctly handle the read. Some examples: kernel/power/user.c snapshot_read fs/debugfs/file.c u32_array_read fs/fuse/control.c fuse_conn_waiting_read + ... drivers/hwmon/asus_atk0110.c atk_debugfs_ggrp_read arch/s390/hypfs/inode.c hypfs_read_iter ... Despite that, many nonseekable_open users implement read and write with pure stream semantics - they don't depend on passed ppos at all. And for those cases where read could wait for something inside, it creates a situation similar to xenbus - the write could be never made to go until read is done, and read is waiting for some, potentially external, event, for potentially unbounded time -> deadlock. FUSE's FOPEN_NONSEEKABLE was added in 2008 in a7c1b990f715 ("fuse: implement nonseekable open") to support OSSPD. The plan is: 1. We can't change nonseekable_open to include &~FMODE_ATOMIC_POS - doing so would break many in-kernel nonseekable_open users which actually use ppos in read/write handlers. 2. Add stream_open() to kernel to open stream-like non-seekable file descriptors. Read and write on such file descriptors would never use nor change ppos. And with that property on stream-like files read and write will be running without taking f_pos lock - i.e. read and write could be running simultaneously. 3. With semantic patch search and convert to stream_open all in-kernel nonseekable_open users for which read and write actually do not depend on ppos and where there is no other methods in file_operations which assume @offset access. 4. Add FOPEN_STREAM to fs/fuse/ and open in-kernel file-descriptors via steam_open if that bit is present in filesystem open reply. Add stream_open and FOPEN_STREAM handling to stable kernels starting from v3.14+ (the kernel where 9c225f2655 first appeared). This will allow to patch OSSPD and other FUSE filesystems that provide stream-like files to return FOPEN_STREAM | FOPEN_NONSEEKABLE in their open handler and this way avoid the deadlock on all kernel versions. This should work because fs/fuse/ ignores unknown open flags returned from a filesystem and so passing FOPEN_STREAM to a kernel that is not aware of this flag cannot hurt. In turn the kernel that is not aware of FOPEN_STREAM will be < v3.14 where just FOPEN_NONSEEKABLE is sufficient to implement streams without read vs write deadlock. This patch adds stream_open, converts /proc/xen/xenbus to it and adds semantic patch to automatically locate in-kernel places that are either required to be converted due to read vs write deadlock, or that are just safe to be converted because read and write do not use ppos and there are no other funky methods in file_operations. Regarding semantic patch I've verified each generated change manually - that it is correct to convert - and each other nonseekable_open instance left - that it is either not correct to convert there, or that it is not converted due to current stream_open.cocci limitations. 2019-06-09xen/pciback: Don't disable PCI_COMMAND on PCI device reset.Konrad Rzeszutek Wilk

Worst it means that if the guest tries to write to BARs it could lead (on certain platforms) to PCI SERR errors. Please note that with af6fc858a35b90e89ea7a7ee58e66628c55c776b "xen-pciback: limit guest control of command register" a guest is still allowed to enable those control bits (safely), but is not allowed to disable them and that therefore a well behaved frontend which enables things before using them will still function correctly. This is done via an write to the configuration register 0x4 which triggers on the backend side: command_write \- pci_enable_device \- pci_enable_device_flags \- do_pci_enable_device \- pcibios_enable_device \-pci_enable_resourcess [which enables the PCI_COMMAND_MEMORY|PCI_COMMAND_IO] However guests (and drivers) which don't do this could cause problems, including the security issues which XSA-120 sought to address. That commit unintentionally broke Xen balloon memory hotplug with "hotplug_unpopulated" set to 1. As long as "System RAM" resource got assigned under a new "Unusable memory" resource in IO/Mem tree any attempt to online this memory would fail due to general kernel restrictions on having "System RAM" resources as 1st level only. The original issue that commit has tried to workaround fa564ad96366 ("x86/PCI: Enable a 64bit BAR on AMD Family 15h (Models 00-1f, 30-3f, 60-7f)") also got amended by the following 03a551734 ("x86/PCI: Move and shrink AMD 64-bit window to avoid conflict") which made the original fix to Xen ballooning unnecessary. commit 7250f422da0480d8512b756640f131b9b893ccda upstream. xen_swiotlb_{alloc,free}_coherent() allocate/free memory based on the order of the pages and not size argument (bytes). This is inconsistent with range_straddles_page_boundary and memset which use the 'size' value, which may lead to not exchanging memory with Xen (range_straddles_page_boundary() returned true). And then the call to xen_swiotlb_free_coherent() would actually try to exchange the memory with Xen, leading to the kernel hitting an BUG (as the hypercall returned an error). This patch fixes it by making the 'size' variable be of the same size as the amount of memory allocated. 2018-09-15xen/balloon: fix balloon initialization for PVH Dom0Roger Pau Monne
[ Upstream commit 3596924a233e45aa918c961a902170fc4916461b ] The current balloon code tries to calculate a delta factor for the balloon target when running in HVM mode in order to account for memory used by the firmware. This workaround for memory accounting doesn't work properly on a PVH Dom0, that has a static-max value different from the target value even at startup. Note that this is not a problem for DomUs because guests are started with a static-max value that matches the amount of RAM in the memory map. Fix this by forcefully setting target_diff for Dom0, regardless of it's mode. Since there is really no reason for the BUG_ON (xen_free_irq() can operate on unbound irqs) we can remove it. commit 4855c92dbb7b3b85c23e88ab7ca04f99b9677b41 upstream. When run raidconfig from Dom0 we found that the Xen DMA heap is reduced, but Dom Heap is increased by the same size. Tracing raidconfig we found that the related ioctl() in megaraid_sas will call dma_alloc_coherent() to apply memory. If the memory allocated by Dom0 is not in the DMA area, it will exchange memory with Xen to meet the requiment. Later drivers call dma_free_coherent() to free the memory, on xen_swiotlb_free_coherent() the check condition (dev_addr + size - 1 <= dma_mask) is always false, it prevents calling xen_destroy_contiguous_region() to return the memory to the Xen DMA heap. This issue introduced by commit 6810df88dcfc2 "xen-swiotlb: When doing coherent alloc/dealloc check before swizzling the MFNs.". [ Upstream commit 3ac7292a25db1c607a50752055a18aba32ac2176 ] The page given to gnttab_end_foreign_access() to free could be a compound page so use put_page() instead of free_page() since it can handle both compound and single pages correctly. This bug was discovered when migrating a Xen VM with several VIFs and CONFIG_DEBUG_VM enabled. It hits a BUG usually after fewer than 10 iterations. All netfront devices disconnect from the backend during a suspend/resume and this will call gnttab_end_foreign_access() if a netfront queue has an outstanding skb. The mismatch between calling get_page() and free_page() on a compound page causes a reference counting error which is detected when DEBUG_VM is enabled. Commit fd8aa9095a95 ("xen: optimize xenbus driver for multiple concurrent xenstore accesses") made a subtle change to the semantic of xenbus_dev_request_and_reply() and xenbus_transaction_end(). Before on an error response to XS_TRANSACTION_END xenbus_dev_request_and_reply() would not decrement the active transaction counter. But xenbus_transaction_end() has always counted the transaction as finished regardless of the response. The new behavior is that xenbus_dev_request_and_reply() and xenbus_transaction_end() will always count the transaction as finished regardless the response code (handled in xs_request_exit()). But xenbus_dev_frontend tries to end a transaction on closing of the device if the XS_TRANSACTION_END failed before. Trying to close the transaction twice corrupts the reference count. So fix this by also considering a transaction closed if we have sent XS_TRANSACTION_END once regardless of the return code. This is only needed when use_ptemod is true because gntdev_put_map() will unmap grant pages itself when use_ptemod is false. 2018-03-03xen/balloon: Mark unallocated host memory as UNUSABLEBoris Ostrovsky
[ Upstream commit b3cf8528bb21febb650a7ecbf080d0647be40b9f ] Commit f5775e0b6116 ("x86/xen: discard RAM regions above the maximum reservation") left host memory not assigned to dom0 as available for memory hotplug. Unfortunately this also meant that those regions could be used by others. Specifically, commit fa564ad96366 ("x86/PCI: Enable a 64bit BAR on AMD Family 15h (Models 00-1f, 30-3f, 60-7f)") may try to map those addresses as MMIO. To prevent this mark unallocated host memory as E820_TYPE_UNUSABLE (thus effectively reverting f5775e0b6116) and keep track of that region as a hostmem resource that can be used for the hotplug. The root cause is as follows: When the pages are written to swap device during swapping out in swap_writepage(), zswap (fontswap) is tried to compress the pages to improve performance. But zswap (frontswap) will treat THP as a normal page, so only the head page is saved. After swapping in, tail pages will not be restored to their original contents, causing memory corruption in the applications. This is fixed by refusing to save page in the frontswap store functions if the page is a THP. So that the THP will be swapped out to swap device. Another choice is to split THP if frontswap is enabled. But it is found that the frontswap enabling isn't flexible. For example, if CONFIG_ZSWAP=y (cannot be module), frontswap will be enabled even if zswap itself isn't enabled. Frontswap has multiple backends, to make it easy for one backend to enable THP support, the THP checking is put in backend frontswap store functions instead of the general interfaces. Commit fd8aa9095a95 ("xen: optimize xenbus driver for multiple concurrent xenstore accesses") optimized xenbus concurrent accesses but in doing so broke UABI of /dev/xen/xenbus. Through /dev/xen/xenbus applications are in charge of xenbus message exchange with the correct header and body. Now, after the mentioned commit the replies received by application will no longer have the header req_id echoed back as it was on request (see specification below for reference), because that particular field is being overwritten by kernel. struct xsd_sockmsg { uint32_t type; /* XS_??? */ uint32_t req_id;/* Request identifier, echoed in daemon's response. */ uint32_t tx_id; /* Transaction id (0 if not related to a transaction). */ uint32_t len; /* Length of data following this. */ /* Generally followed by nul-terminated string(s). */ }; Before there was only one request at a time so req_id could simply be forwarded back and forth. To allow simultaneous requests we need a different req_id for each message thus kernel keeps a monotonic increasing counter for this field and is written on every request irrespective of userspace value. Forwarding again the req_id on userspace requests is not a solution because we would open the possibility of userspace-generated req_id colliding with kernel ones. So this patch instead takes another route which is to artificially keep user req_id while keeping the xenbus logic as is. We do that by saving the original req_id before xs_send(), use the private kernel counter as req_id and then once reply comes and was validated, we restore back the original req_id. Commit 96edd61dcf44362d3ef0bed1a5361e0ac7886a63 ("xen/balloon: don't online new memory initially") introduced a regression when booting a HVM domain with memory less than mem-max: instead of ballooning down immediately the system would try to use the memory up to mem-max resulting in Xen crashing the domain. For HVM domains the current size will be reflected in Xenstore node memory/static-max instead of memory/target. Additionally we have to trigger the ballooning process at once.
