2014-11-14ext3: Don't check quota format when there are no quota filesJan Kara
commit 7938db449bbc55bbeb164bec7af406212e7e98f1 upstream. The check whether quota format is set even though there are no quota files with journalled quota is pointless and it actually makes it impossible to turn off journalled quotas (as there's no way to unset journalled quota format). Just remove the check. Signed-off-by: Jan Kara <jack@suse.cz> Signed-off-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@linuxfoundation.org>
2013-10-16ext3: Count journal as bsddf overhead in ext3_statfsEric Sandeen
ext4 counts journal space as bsddf overhead, but ext3 does not. For some reason when I patched ext4 I thought I should leave ext3 alone, but frankly it makes more sense to fix it, I think. Otherwise we get inconsistent behavior from ext3 under ext3.ko, and ext3 under ext4.ko, which is not at all desirable... This is testable by xfstests shared/289, though it will need modification because it currently special-cases ext3. 2013-07-31ext3: allow specifying external journal by pathname mount optionEric Sandeen
It's always been a hassle that if an external journal's device number changes, the filesystem won't mount. And since boot-time enumeration can change, device number changes aren't unusual. The current mechanism to update the journal location is by passing in a mount option w/ a new devnum, but that's a hassle; it's a manual approach, fixing things after the fact. Adding a mount option, "-o journal_path=/dev/$DEVICE" would help, since then we can do i.e. # mount -o journal_path=/dev/disk/by-label/$JOURNAL_LABEL ... and it'll mount even if the devnum has changed, as shown here: # losetup /dev/loop0 journalfile # mke2fs -L mylabel-journal -O journal_dev /dev/loop0 # mkfs.ext3 -L mylabel -J device=/dev/loop0 /dev/sdb1 Change the journal device number: # losetup -d /dev/loop0 # losetup /dev/loop1 journalfile And today it will fail: # mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/test mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdb1, missing codepage or helper program, or other error In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so # dmesg | tail -n 1 [17343.240702] EXT3-fs (sdb1): error: couldn't read superblock of external journal But with this new mount option, we can specify the new path: # mount -o journal_path=/dev/loop1 /dev/sdb1 /mnt/test # (which does update the encoded device number, incidentally): # umount /dev/sdb1 # dumpe2fs -h /dev/sdb1 | grep "Journal device" dumpe2fs 1.41.12 (17-May-2010) Journal device: 0x0701 But best of all we can just always mount by journal-path, and it'll always work: # mount -o journal_path=/dev/disk/by-label/mylabel-journal /dev/sdb1 /mnt/test # So the journal_path option can be specified in fstab, and as long as the disk is available somewhere, and findable by label (or by UUID), we can mount. If filesystem was aborted we will return success due to (sb->s_flags & MS_RDONLY) which is incorrect and results in data loss. 2013-04-29mm: make snapshotting pages for stable writes a per-bio operationDarrick J. Wong
Walking a bio's page mappings has proved problematic, so create a new bio flag to indicate that a bio's data needs to be snapshotted in order to guarantee stable pages during writeback. Next, for the one user (ext3/jbd) of snapshotting, hook all the places where writes can be initiated without PG_writeback set, and set BIO_SNAP_STABLE there. We must also flag journal "metadata" bios for stable writeout, since file data can be written through the journal. Finally, the MS_SNAP_STABLE mount flag (only used by ext3) is now superfluous, so get rid of it. 2013-03-11ext3: Fix format string issuesLars-Peter Clausen
ext3_msg() takes the printk prefix as the second parameter and the format string as the third parameter. Two callers of ext3_msg omit the prefix and pass the format string as the second parameter and the first parameter to the format string as the third parameter. In both cases this string comes from an arbitrary source. Which means the string may contain format string characters, which will lead to undefined and potentially harmful behavior. The issue was introduced in commit 4cf46b67eb("ext3: Unify log messages in ext3") and is fixed by this patch. 2013-03-03fs: Limit sys_mount to only request filesystem modules.Eric W. Biederman
Modify the request_module to prefix the file system type with "fs-" and add aliases to all of the filesystems that can be built as modules to match. A common practice is to build all of the kernel code and leave code that is not commonly needed as modules, with the result that many users are exposed to any bug anywhere in the kernel. Looking for filesystems with a fs- prefix limits the pool of possible modules that can be loaded by mount to just filesystems trivially making things safer with no real cost. Using aliases means user space can control the policy of which filesystem modules are auto-loaded by editing /etc/modprobe.d/*.conf with blacklist and alias directives. Allowing simple, safe, well understood work-arounds to known problematic software. This also addresses a rare but unfortunate problem where the filesystem name is not the same as it's module name and module auto-loading would not work. While writing this patch I saw a handful of such cases. The most significant being autofs that lives in the module autofs4. This is relevant to user namespaces because we can reach the request module in get_fs_type() without having any special permissions, and people get uncomfortable when a user specified string (in this case the filesystem type) goes all of the way to request_module. After having looked at this issue I don't think there is any particular reason to perform any filtering or permission checks beyond making it clear in the module request that we want a filesystem module. The common pattern in the kernel is to call request_module() without regards to the users permissions. In general all a filesystem module does once loaded is call register_filesystem() and go to sleep. Which means there is not much attack surface exposed by loading a filesytem module unless the filesystem is mounted. In a user namespace filesystems are not mounted unless .fs_flags = FS_USERNS_MOUNT, which most filesystems do not set today. 2013-02-21block: optionally snapshot page contents to provide stable pages during writeDarrick J. Wong
This provides a band-aid to provide stable page writes on jbd without needing to backport the fixed locking and page writeback bit handling schemes of jbd2. The band-aid works by using bounce buffers to snapshot page contents instead of waiting. For those wondering about the ext3 bandage -- fixing the jbd locking (which was done as part of ext4dev years ago) is a lot of surgery, and setting PG_writeback on data pages when we actually hold the page lock dropped ext3 performance by nearly an order of magnitude. If we're going to migrate iscsi and raid to use stable page writes, the complaints about high latency will likely return. We might as well centralize their page snapshotting thing to one place. git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/viro/vfs Pull vfs update from Al Viro: - big one - consolidation of descriptor-related logics; almost all of that is moved to fs/file.c (BTW, I'm seriously tempted to rename the result to fd.c. As it is, we have a situation when file_table.c is about handling of struct file and file.c is about handling of descriptor tables; the reasons are historical - file_table.c used to be about a static array of struct file we used to have way back). A lot of stray ends got cleaned up and converted to saner primitives, disgusting mess in android/binder.c is still disgusting, but at least doesn't poke so much in descriptor table guts anymore. A bunch of relatively minor races got fixed in process, plus an ext4 struct file leak. - related thing - fget_light() partially unuglified; see fdget() in there (and yes, it generates the code as good as we used to have). - also related - bits of Cyrill's procfs stuff that got entangled into that work; _not_ all of it, just the initial move to fs/proc/fd.c and switch of fdinfo to seq_file. - Alex's fs/coredump.c spiltoff - the same story, had been easier to take that commit than mess with conflicts. The rest is a separate pile, this was just a mechanical code movement. - a few misc patches all over the place. git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/ebiederm/user-namespace Pull user namespace changes from Eric Biederman: "This is a mostly modest set of changes to enable basic user namespace support. This allows the code to code to compile with user namespaces enabled and removes the assumption there is only the initial user namespace. Everything is converted except for the most complex of the filesystems: autofs4, 9p, afs, ceph, cifs, coda, fuse, gfs2, ncpfs, nfs, ocfs2 and xfs as those patches need a bit more review. The strategy is to push kuid_t and kgid_t values are far down into subsystems and filesystems as reasonable. Leaving the make_kuid and from_kuid operations to happen at the edge of userspace, as the values come off the disk, and as the values come in from the network. Letting compile type incompatible compile errors (present when user namespaces are enabled) guide me to find the issues. The most tricky areas have been the places where we had an implicit union of uid and gid values and were storing them in an unsigned int. Those places were converted into explicit unions. I made certain to handle those places with simple trivial patches. Out of that work I discovered we have generic interfaces for storing quota by projid. I had never heard of the project identifiers before. Adding full user namespace support for project identifiers accounts for most of the code size growth in my git tree. Ultimately there will be work to relax privlige checks from "capable(FOO)" to "ns_capable(user_ns, FOO)" where it is safe allowing root in a user names to do those things that today we only forbid to non-root users because it will confuse suid root applications. While I was pushing kuid_t and kgid_t changes deep into the audit code I made a few other cleanups. I capitalized on the fact we process netlink messages in the context of the message sender. I removed usage of NETLINK_CRED, and started directly using current->tty. Some of these patches have also made it into maintainer trees, with no problems from identical code from different trees showing up in linux-next. After reading through all of this code I feel like I might be able to win a game of kernel trivial pursuit." 2012-09-18userns: Convert struct dquot dq_id to be a struct kqidEric W. Biederman
Change struct dquot dq_id to a struct kqid and remove the now unecessary dq_type. Make minimal changes to dquot, quota_tree, quota_v1, quota_v2, ext3, ext4, and ocfs2 to deal with the change in quota structures and signatures. The ocfs2 changes are larger than most because of the extensive tracing throughout the ocfs2 quota code that prints out dq_id. quota_tree.c:get_index is modified to take a struct kqid instead of a qid_t because all of it's callers pass in dquot->dq_id and it allows me to introduce only a single conversion. The rest of the changes are either just replacing dq_type with dq_id.type, adding conversions to deal with the change in type and occassionally adding qid_eq to allow quota id comparisons in a user namespace safe way. 2012-09-04ext3: don't clear orphan list on ro mount with errorsEric Sandeen
When we have a filesystem with an orphan inode list *and* in error state, things behave differently if: 1) e2fsck -p is done prior to mount: e2fsck fixes things and exits happily (barring other significant problems) vs. 2) mount is done first, then e2fsck -p: due to the orphan inode list removal, more errors are found and e2fsck exits with UNEXPECTED INCONSISTENCY. The 2nd case above, on the root filesystem, has the tendency to halt the boot process, which is unfortunate. 2012-07-22quota: Move quota syncing to ->sync_fs methodJan Kara
Since the moment writes to quota files are using block device page cache and space for quota structures is reserved at the moment they are first accessed we have no reason to sync quota before inode writeback. In fact this order is now only harmful since quota information can easily change during inode writeback (either because conversion of delayed-allocated extents or simply because of allocation of new blocks for simple filesystems not using page_mkwrite). So move syncing of quota information after writeback of inodes into ->sync_fs method. This way we do not have to use ->quota_sync callback which is primarily intended for use by quotactl syscall anyway and we get rid of calling ->sync_fs() twice unnecessarily. We skip quota syncing for OCFS2 since it does proper quota journalling in all cases (unlike ext3, ext4, and reiserfs which also support legacy non-journalled quotas) and thus there are no dirty quota structures. Seeing that just about every destructor got that INIT_LIST_HEAD() copied into it, there is no point whatsoever keeping this INIT_LIST_HEAD in inode_init_once(); the cost of taking it into inode_init_always() will be negligible for pipes and sockets and negative for everything else. If there are some inodes in orphan list while a filesystem is being read-only mounted, we should recommend that peole umount and then mount it when they try to remount with read-write. But the current message and comment recommend that they umount and then remount it which may be slightly misleading. 2011-06-25ext3: Add fixed tracepointsLukas Czerner
This commit adds fixed tracepoints to the ext3 code. It is based on ext4 tracepoints, however due to the differences of both file systems, there are some tracepoints missing (those for delaloc and for multi-block allocator) and there are some ext3 specific as well (for reservation windows). Here is a list: ext3_free_inode ext3_request_inode ext3_allocate_inode ext3_evict_inode ext3_drop_inode ext3_mark_inode_dirty ext3_write_begin ext3_ordered_write_end ext3_writeback_write_end ext3_journalled_write_end ext3_ordered_writepage ext3_writeback_writepage ext3_journalled_writepage ext3_readpage ext3_releasepage ext3_invalidatepage ext3_discard_blocks ext3_request_blocks ext3_allocate_blocks ext3_free_blocks ext3_sync_file_enter ext3_sync_file_exit ext3_sync_fs ext3_rsv_window_add ext3_discard_reservation ext3_alloc_new_reservation ext3_reserved ext3_forget ext3_read_block_bitmap ext3_direct_IO_enter ext3_direct_IO_exit ext3_unlink_enter ext3_unlink_exit ext3_truncate_enter ext3_truncate_exit ext3_get_blocks_enter ext3_get_blocks_exit ext3_load_inode Signed-off-by: Lukas Czerner <lczerner@redhat.com> Cc: Jan Kara <jack@suse.cz> Signed-off-by: Jan Kara <jack@suse.cz>
2011-05-26ext3: add cleancache supportDan Magenheimer
This fifth patch of eight in this cleancache series "opts-in" cleancache for ext3. Filesystems must explicitly enable cleancache by calling cleancache_init_fs anytime an instance of the filesystem is mounted. For ext3, all other cleancache hooks are in the VFS layer including the matching cleancache_flush_fs hook which must be called on unmount. Details and a FAQ can be found in Documentation/vm/cleancache.txt [v6-v8: no changes] [v5: jeremy@goop.org: simplify init hook and any future fs init changes] Signed-off-by: Dan Magenheimer <dan.magenheimer@oracle.com> Reviewed-by: Jeremy Fitzhardinge <jeremy@goop.org> Reviewed-by: Konrad Rzeszutek Wilk <konrad.wilk@oracle.com> Acked-by: Andreas Dilger <adilger@sun.com> Cc: Ted Ts'o <tytso@mit.edu> Cc: Andrew Morton <akpm@linux-foundation.org> Cc: Al Viro <viro@ZenIV.linux.org.uk> Cc: Matthew Wilcox <matthew@wil.cx> Cc: Nick Piggin <npiggin@kernel.dk> Cc: Mel Gorman <mel@csn.ul.ie> Cc: Rik Van Riel <riel@redhat.com> Cc: Jan Beulich <JBeulich@novell.com> Cc: Chris Mason <chris.mason@oracle.com> Cc: Mark Fasheh <mfasheh@suse.com> Cc: Joel Becker <joel.becker@oracle.com> Cc: Nitin Gupta <ngupta@vflare.org>

2011-02-28ext3: skip orphan cleanup on rocompat fsAmir Goldstein
Orphan cleanup is currently executed even if the file system has some number of unknown ROCOMPAT features, which deletes inodes and frees blocks, which could be very bad for some RO_COMPAT features. This patch skips the orphan cleanup if it contains readonly compatible features not known by this ext3 implementation, which would prevent the fs from being mounted (or remounted) readwrite. 2011-01-12quota: Fix deadlock during path resolutionJan Kara
As Al Viro pointed out path resolution during Q_QUOTAON calls to quotactl is prone to deadlocks. We hold s_umount semaphore for reading during the path resolution and resolution itself may need to acquire the semaphore for writing when e. g. autofs mountpoint is passed. Solve the problem by performing the resolution before we get hold of the superblock (and thus s_umount semaphore). The whole thing is complicated by the fact that some filesystems (OCFS2) ignore the path argument. So to distinguish between filesystem which want the path and which do not we introduce new .quota_on_meta callback which does not get the path. OCFS2 then uses this callback instead of old .quota_on.
