Since commit 18290650b1c8 ("NFS: Move buffered I/O locking into nfs_file_write()") nfs_file_write() has not flushed the correct byte range during synchronous writes. generic_write_sync() expects that iocb->ki_pos points to the right edge of the range rather than the left edge. To replicate the problem, open a file with O_DSYNC, have the client write at increasing offsets, and then print the successful offsets. Block port 2049 partway through that sequence, and observe that the client application indicates successful writes in advance of what the server received. The blocklayout code does not compile cleanly for a 32-bit sector_t, and also has no reliable checks for devices sizes, which makes it unsafe to use with a kernel that doesn't support large block devices. 2017-08-06NFSv4.1: Fix a race where CB_NOTIFY_LOCK fails to wake a waiterBenjamin Coddington
commit b7dbcc0e433f0f61acb89ed9861ec996be4f2b38 upstream. nfs4_retry_setlk() sets the task's state to TASK_INTERRUPTIBLE within the same region protected by the wait_queue's lock after checking for a notification from CB_NOTIFY_LOCK callback. However, after releasing that lock, a wakeup for that task may race in before the call to freezable_schedule_timeout_interruptible() and set TASK_WAKING, then freezable_schedule_timeout_interruptible() will set the state back to TASK_INTERRUPTIBLE before the task will sleep. The result is that the task will sleep for the entire duration of the timeout. Since we've already set TASK_INTERRUPTIBLE in the locked section, just use freezable_schedule_timout() instead. 2017-08-06NFS: invalidate file size when taking a lock.NeilBrown
commit 442ce0499c0535f8972b68fa1fda357357a5c953 upstream. Prior to commit ca0daa277aca ("NFS: Cache aggressively when file is open for writing"), NFS would revalidate, or invalidate, the file size when taking a lock. Since that commit it only invalidates the file content. If the file size is changed on the server while wait for the lock, the client will have an incorrect understanding of the file size and could corrupt data. This particularly happens when writing beyond the (supposed) end of file and can be easily be demonstrated with posix_fallocate(). If an application opens an empty file, waits for a write lock, and then calls posix_fallocate(), glibc will determine that the underlying filesystem doesn't support fallocate (assuming version 4.1 or earlier) and will write out a '0' byte at the end of each 4K page in the region being fallocated that is after the end of the file. NFS will (usually) detect that these writes are beyond EOF and will expand them to cover the whole page, and then will merge the pages. Consequently, NFS will write out large blocks of zeroes beyond where it thought EOF was. If EOF had moved, the pre-existing part of the file will be over-written. Locking should have protected against this, but it doesn't. This patch restores the use of nfs_zap_caches() which invalidated the cached attributes. When posix_fallocate() asks for the file size, the request will go to the server and get a correct answer. 2017-07-27NFS: only invalidate dentrys that are clearly invalid.NeilBrown

Since commit bafc9b754f75 ("vfs: More precise tests in d_invalidate") in v3.18, a return of '0' from ->d_revalidate() will cause the dentry to be invalidated even if it has filesystems mounted on or it or on a descendant. The mounted filesystem is unmounted. This means we need to be careful not to return 0 unless the directory referred to truly is invalid. So -ESTALE or -ENOENT should invalidate the directory. Other errors such a -EPERM or -ERESTARTSYS should be returned from ->d_revalidate() so they are propagated to the caller. A particular problem can be demonstrated by: 1/ mount an NFS filesystem using NFSv3 on /mnt 2/ mount any other filesystem on /mnt/foo 3/ ls /mnt/foo 4/ turn off network, or otherwise make the server unable to respond 5/ ls /mnt/foo & 6/ cat /proc/$!/stack # note that nfs_lookup_revalidate is in the call stack 7/ kill -9 $! # this results in -ERESTARTSYS being returned 8/ observe that /mnt/foo has been unmounted. This patch changes nfs_lookup_revalidate() to only treat -ESTALE from nfs_lookup_verify_inode() and -ESTALE or -ENOENT from ->lookup() as indicating an invalid inode. Other errors are returned. Also nfs_check_inode_attributes() is changed to return -ESTALE rather than -EIO. This is consistent with the error returned in similar circumstances from nfs_update_inode(). As this bug allows any user to unmount a filesystem mounted on an NFS filesystem, this fix is suitable for stable kernels. If the task calling layoutget is signalled, then it is possible for the calls to nfs4_sequence_free_slot() and nfs4_layoutget_prepare() to race, in which case we leak a slot. The fix is to move the call to nfs4_sequence_free_slot() into the nfs4_layoutget_release() so that it gets called at task teardown time. 2017-05-25NFSv4: Fix a hang in OPEN related to server rebootTrond Myklebust

The reason is that the client attempts to send a GETATTR in order to pick up the missing OPEN call, but fails to release the slot first, causing reboot recovery to deadlock. Commit 63d63cbf5e03 "NFSv4.1: Don't recheck delegations that have already been checked" introduced a regression where when a client received BAD_STATEID error it would not send any TEST_STATEID and instead go into an infinite loop of resending the IO that caused the BAD_STATEID. 2017-03-15fs: Better permission checking for submountsEric W. Biederman

To support unprivileged users mounting filesystems two permission checks have to be performed: a test to see if the user allowed to create a mount in the mount namespace, and a test to see if the user is allowed to access the specified filesystem. The automount case is special in that mounting the original filesystem grants permission to mount the sub-filesystems, to any user who happens to stumble across the their mountpoint and satisfies the ordinary filesystem permission checks. Attempting to handle the automount case by using override_creds almost works. It preserves the idea that permission to mount the original filesystem is permission to mount the sub-filesystem. Unfortunately using override_creds messes up the filesystems ordinary permission checks. Solve this by being explicit that a mount is a submount by introducing vfs_submount, and using it where appropriate. vfs_submount uses a new mount internal mount flags MS_SUBMOUNT, to let sget and friends know that a mount is a submount so they can take appropriate action. sget and sget_userns are modified to not perform any permission checks on submounts. follow_automount is modified to stop using override_creds as that has proven problemantic. do_mount is modified to always remove the new MS_SUBMOUNT flag so that we know userspace will never by able to specify it. autofs4 is modified to stop using current_real_cred that was put in there to handle the previous version of submount permission checking. cifs is modified to pass the mountpoint all of the way down to vfs_submount. debugfs is modified to pass the mountpoint all of the way down to trace_automount by adding a new parameter. To make this change easier a new typedef debugfs_automount_t is introduced to capture the type of the debugfs automount function. This is not necessasrily true in the case when the process received a fatal signal while nfs4_pnfs_ds_connect is waiting in nfs4_wait_ds_connect(). In that case ->ds_clp may not be set, and the devid may not recently have been marked unavailable. So add a test for ds_clp == NULL and return NULL in that case. Ben Coddington reports that commit 311324ad1713, by adding the function nfs_dir_mapping_need_revalidate() that checks page cache validity on each call to nfs_readdir() causes a performance regression when the directory is being modified. If the directory is changing while we're iterating through the directory, POSIX does not require us to invalidate the page cache unless the user calls rewinddir(). However, we still do want to ensure that we use readdirplus in order to avoid a load of stat() calls when the user is doing an 'ls -l' workload. The fix should be to invalidate the page cache immediately when we're setting the NFS_INO_ADVISE_RDPLUS bit. A correct bugfix introduced a harmless warning that shows up with gcc-7: fs/nfs/callback.c: In function 'nfs_callback_up': fs/nfs/callback.c:214:14: error: array subscript is outside array bounds [-Werror=array-bounds] What happens here is that the 'minorversion == 0' check tells the compiler that we assume minorversion can be something other than 0, but when CONFIG_NFS_V4_1 is disabled that would be invalid and result in an out-of-bounds access. The added check for IS_ENABLED(CONFIG_NFS_V4_1) tells gcc that this really can't happen, which makes the code slightly smaller and also avoids the warning. The bugfix that introduced the warning is marked for stable backports, we want this one backported to the same releases. The race looks like: Client Server ====== ====== CLOSE stateid A on file "foo" CLOSE stateid A, return stateid C OPEN file "foo" OPEN "foo", return stateid B Receive reply to OPEN Reset open state for "foo" Associate stateid B to "foo" Receive CLOSE for A Reset open state for "foo" Replace stateid B with C The fix is to examine the argument of the CLOSE, and check for a match with the current stateid "other" field. If the two do not match, then the above race occurred, and we should just ignore the CLOSE. We used to check for a valid layout type id before verifying pNFS flags as an indicator for if we are using pNFS. This changed in 3132e49ece with the introduction of multiple layout types, since now we are passing an array of ids instead of just one. Since then, users have been seeing a KERN_ERR printk show up whenever mounting NFS v4 without pNFS. This patch restores the original behavior of exiting set_pnfs_layoutdriver() early if we aren't using pNFS. A bugfix introduced a harmless gcc warning in nfs4_slot_seqid_in_use if we enable -Wmaybe-uninitialized again: fs/nfs/nfs4session.c:203:54: error: 'cur_seq' may be used uninitialized in this function [-Werror=maybe-uninitialized] gcc is not smart enough to conclude that the IS_ERR/PTR_ERR pair results in a nonzero return value here. Using PTR_ERR_OR_ZERO() instead makes this clear to the compiler. The warning originally did not appear in v4.8 as it was globally disabled, but the bugfix that introduced the warning got backported to stable kernels which again enable it, and this is now the only warning in the v4.7 builds. A NFSv4 mount of a subdirectory will show an extra slash (as in 'server://path') in proc's mountinfo which will not match the device name and path.
