2023-04-25seq_buf: Add seq_buf_do_printk() helperSergey Senozhatsky
Sometimes we use seq_buf to format a string buffer, which we then pass to printk(). However, in certain situations the seq_buf string buffer can get too big, exceeding the PRINTKRB_RECORD_MAX bytes limit, and causing printk() to truncate the string. Add a new seq_buf helper. This helper prints the seq_buf string buffer line by line, using \n as a delimiter, rather than passing the whole string buffer to printk() at once. 2023-03-29tracing/user_events: Add ioctl for disabling addressesBeau Belgrave
Enablements are now tracked by the lifetime of the task/mm. User processes need to be able to disable their addresses if tracing is requested to be turned off. Before unmapping the page would suffice. However, we now need a stronger contract. Add an ioctl to enable this. A new flag bit is added, freeing, to user_event_enabler to ensure that if the event is attempted to be removed while a fault is being handled that the remove is delayed until after the fault is reattempted. 2023-03-29tracing/user_events: Use remote writes for event enablementBeau Belgrave
As part of the discussions for user_events aligned with user space tracers, it was determined that user programs should register a aligned value to set or clear a bit when an event becomes enabled. Currently a shared page is being used that requires mmap(). Remove the shared page implementation and move to a user registered address implementation. In this new model during the event registration from user programs 3 new values are specified. The first is the address to update when the event is either enabled or disabled. The second is the bit to set/clear to reflect the event being enabled. The third is the size of the value at the specified address. This allows for a local 32/64-bit value in user programs to support both kernel and user tracers. As an example, setting bit 31 for kernel tracers when the event becomes enabled allows for user tracers to use the other bits for ref counts or other flags. The kernel side updates the bit atomically, user programs need to also update these values atomically. User provided addresses must be aligned on a natural boundary, this allows for single page checking and prevents odd behaviors such as a enable value straddling 2 pages instead of a single page. Currently page faults are only logged, future patches will handle these. 2023-03-29tracing/user_events: Track fork/exec/exit for mm lifetimeBeau Belgrave
During tracefs discussions it was decided instead of requiring a mapping within a user-process to track the lifetime of memory descriptors we should hook the appropriate calls. Do this by adding the minimal stubs required for task fork, exec, and exit. Currently this is just a NOP. Future patches will implement these calls fully. 2023-03-21ftrace: Show a list of all functions that have ever been enabledSteven Rostedt (Google)
When debugging a crash that appears to be related to ftrace, but not for sure, it is useful to know if a function was ever enabled by ftrace or not. It could be that a BPF program was attached to it, or possibly a live patch. We are having crashes in the field where this information is not always known. But having ftrace set a flag if a function has ever been attached since boot up helps tremendously in trying to know if a crash had to do with something using ftrace. For analyzing crashes, the use of a kdump image can have access to the flags. When looking at issues where the kernel did not panic, the touched_functions file can simply be used. 2023-03-21ftrace: selftest: remove broken trace_direct_trampMark Rutland
The ftrace selftest code has a trace_direct_tramp() function which it uses as a direct call trampoline. This happens to work on x86, since the direct call's return address is in the usual place, and can be returned to via a RET, but in general the calling convention for direct calls is different from regular function calls, and requires a trampoline written in assembly. On s390, regular function calls place the return address in %r14, and an ftrace patch-site in an instrumented function places the trampoline's return address (which is within the instrumented function) in %r0, preserving the original %r14 value in-place. As a regular C function will return to the address in %r14, using a C function as the trampoline results in the trampoline returning to the caller of the instrumented function, skipping the body of the instrumented function. Note that the s390 issue is not detcted by the ftrace selftest code, as the instrumented function is trivial, and returning back into the caller happens to be equivalent. On arm64, regular function calls place the return address in x30, and an ftrace patch-site in an instrumented function saves this into r9 and places the trampoline's return address (within the instrumented function) in x30. A regular C function will return to the address in x30, but will not restore x9 into x30. Consequently, using a C function as the trampoline results in returning to the trampoline's return address having corrupted x30, such that when the instrumented function returns, it will return back into itself. To avoid future issues in this area, remove the trace_direct_tramp() function, and require that each architecture with direct calls provides a stub trampoline, named ftrace_stub_direct_tramp. This can be written to handle the architecture's trampoline calling convention, and in future could be used elsewhere (e.g. in the ftrace ops sample, to measure the overhead of direct calls), so we may as well always build it in. 2023-03-21ftrace: Make DIRECT_CALLS work WITH_ARGS and !WITH_REGSFlorent Revest
Direct called trampolines can be called in two ways: - either from the ftrace callsite. In this case, they do not access any struct ftrace_regs nor pt_regs - Or, if a ftrace ops is also attached, from the end of a ftrace trampoline. In this case, the call_direct_funcs ops is in charge of setting the direct call trampoline's address in a struct ftrace_regs Since: commit 9705bc709604 ("ftrace: pass fregs to arch_ftrace_set_direct_caller()") The later case no longer requires a full pt_regs. It only needs a struct ftrace_regs so DIRECT_CALLS can work with both WITH_ARGS or WITH_REGS. With architectures like arm64 already abandoning WITH_REGS in favor of WITH_ARGS, it's important to have DIRECT_CALLS work WITH_ARGS only. 2023-03-21ftrace: Store direct called addresses in their opsFlorent Revest
All direct calls are now registered using the register_ftrace_direct API so each ops can jump to only one direct-called trampoline. By storing the direct called trampoline address directly in the ops we can save one hashmap lookup in the direct call ops and implement arm64 direct calls on top of call ops. Now that the original _ftrace_direct APIs are gone, the "_multi" suffixes only add confusion. 2023-03-21ftrace: Remove the legacy _ftrace_direct APIFlorent Revest
This API relies on a single global ops, used for all direct calls registered with it. However, to implement arm64 direct calls, we need each ops to point to a single direct call trampoline. 2023-03-21ftrace: Let unregister_ftrace_direct_multi() call ftrace_free_filter()Florent Revest
A common pattern when using the ftrace_direct_multi API is to unregister the ops and also immediately free its filter. We've noticed it's very easy for users to miss calling ftrace_free_filter(). This adds a "free_filters" argument to unregister_ftrace_direct_multi() to both remind the user they should free filters and also to make their life easier. 2023-03-16net/sched: act_api: add specific EXT_WARN_MSG for tc actionHangbin Liu
In my previous commit 0349b8779cc9 ("sched: add new attr TCA_EXT_WARN_MSG to report tc extact message") I didn't notice the tc action use different enum with filter. So we can't use TCA_EXT_WARN_MSG directly for tc action. Let's add a TCA_ROOT_EXT_WARN_MSG for tc action specifically and put this param before going to the TCA_ACT_TAB nest. 2023-03-16ynl: broaden the license even moreJakub Kicinski
I relicensed Netlink spec code to GPL-2.0 OR BSD-3-Clause but we still put a slightly different license on the uAPI header than the rest of the code. Use the Linux-syscall-note on all the specs and all generated code. It's moot for kernel code, but should not hurt. This way the licenses match everywhere. 2023-03-15block: count 'ios' and 'sectors' when io is done for bio-based deviceYu Kuai
While using iostat for raid, I observed very strange 'await' occasionally, and turns out it's due to that 'ios' and 'sectors' is counted in bdev_start_io_acct(), while 'nsecs' is counted in bdev_end_io_acct(). I'm not sure why they are ccounted like that but I think this behaviour is obviously wrong because user will get wrong disk stats. 2023-03-14tracing: Make tracepoint lockdep check actually test somethingSteven Rostedt (Google)
A while ago where the trace events had the following: rcu_read_lock_sched_notrace(); rcu_dereference_sched(...); rcu_read_unlock_sched_notrace(); If the tracepoint is enabled, it could trigger RCU issues if called in the wrong place. And this warning was only triggered if lockdep was enabled. If the tracepoint was never enabled with lockdep, the bug would not be caught. To handle this, the above sequence was done when lockdep was enabled regardless if the tracepoint was enabled or not (although the always enabled code really didn't do anything, it would still trigger a warning). But a lot has changed since that lockdep code was added. One is, that sequence no longer triggers any warning. Another is, the tracepoint when enabled doesn't even do that sequence anymore. The main check we care about today is whether RCU is "watching" or not. So if lockdep is enabled, always check if rcu_is_watching() which will trigger a warning if it is not (tracepoints require RCU to be watching). Note, that old sequence did add a bit of overhead when lockdep was enabled, and with the latest kernel updates, would cause the system to slow down enough to trigger kernel "stalled" warnings. 2023-03-14block: do not reverse request order when flushing plug listJan Kara
Commit 26fed4ac4eab ("block: flush plug based on hardware and software queue order") changed flushing of plug list to submit requests one device at a time. However while doing that it also started using list_add_tail() instead of list_add() used previously thus effectively submitting requests in reverse order. Also when forming a rq_list with remaining requests (in case two or more devices are used), we effectively reverse the ordering of the plug list for each device we process. Submitting requests in reverse order has negative impact on performance for rotational disks (when BFQ is not in use). We observe 10-25% regression in random 4k write throughput, as well as ~20% regression in MariaDB OLTP benchmark on rotational storage on btrfs filesystem. Fix the problem by preserving ordering of the plug list when inserting requests into the queuelist as well as by appending to requeue_list instead of prepending to it. 2023-03-13PCI: s390: Fix use-after-free of PCI resources with per-function hotplugNiklas Schnelle
On s390 PCI functions may be hotplugged individually even when they belong to a multi-function device. In particular on an SR-IOV device VFs may be removed and later re-added. In commit a50297cf8235 ("s390/pci: separate zbus creation from scanning") it was missed however that struct pci_bus and struct zpci_bus's resource list retained a reference to the PCI functions MMIO resources even though those resources are released and freed on hot-unplug. These stale resources may subsequently be claimed when the PCI function re-appears resulting in use-after-free. One idea of fixing this use-after-free in s390 specific code that was investigated was to simply keep resources around from the moment a PCI function first appeared until the whole virtual PCI bus created for a multi-function device disappears. The problem with this however is that due to the requirement of artificial MMIO addreesses (address cookies) extra logic is then needed to keep the address cookies compatible on re-plug. At the same time the MMIO resources semantically belong to the PCI function so tying their lifecycle to the function seems more logical. Instead a simpler approach is to remove the resources of an individually hot-unplugged PCI function from the PCI bus's resource list while keeping the resources of other PCI functions on the PCI bus untouched. This is done by introducing pci_bus_remove_resource() to remove an individual resource. Similarly the resource also needs to be removed from the struct zpci_bus's resource list. It turns out however, that there is really no need to add the MMIO resources to the struct zpci_bus's resource list at all and instead we can simply use the zpci_bar_struct's resource pointer directly. 2023-03-12cpumask: relax sanity checking constraintsLinus Torvalds
The cpumask_check() was unnecessarily tight, and causes problems for the users of cpumask_next(). We have a number of users that take the previous return value of one of the bit scanning functions and subtract one to keep it in "range". But since the scanning functions end up returning up to 'small_cpumask_bits' instead of the tighter 'nr_cpumask_bits', the range really needs to be using that widened form. [ This "previous-1" behavior is also the reason we have all those comments about /* -1 is a legal arg here. */ and separate checks for that being ok. So we could have just made "small_cpumask_bits-1" be a similar special "don't check this" value. Tetsuo Handa even suggested a patch that only does that for cpumask_next(), since that seems to be the only actual case that triggers, but that all makes it even _more_ magical and special. So just relax the check ] One example of this kind of pattern being the 'c_start()' function in arch/x86/kernel/cpu/proc.c, but also duplicated in various forms on other architectures. 2023-03-11KVM: arm64: timers: Convert per-vcpu virtual offset to a global valueMarc Zyngier
Having a per-vcpu virtual offset is a pain. It needs to be synchronized on each update, and expands badly to a setup where different timers can have different offsets, or have composite offsets (as with NV). So let's start by replacing the use of the CNTVOFF_EL2 shadow register (which we want to reclaim for NV anyway), and make the virtual timer carry a pointer to a VM-wide offset. This simplifies the code significantly. It also addresses two terrible bugs: - The use of CNTVOFF_EL2 leads to some nice offset corruption when the sysreg gets reset, as reported by Joey. - The kvm mutex is taken from a vcpu ioctl, which goes against the locking rules... 2023-03-10fbdev: Fix incorrect page mapping clearance at fb_deferred_io_release()Takashi Iwai
The recent fix for the deferred I/O by the commit 3efc61d95259 ("fbdev: Fix invalid page access after closing deferred I/O devices") caused a regression when the same fb device is opened/closed while it's being used. It resulted in a frozen screen even if something is redrawn there after the close. The breakage is because the patch was made under a wrong assumption of a single open; in the current code, fb_deferred_io_release() cleans up the page mapping of the pageref list and it calls cancel_delayed_work_sync() unconditionally, where both are no correct behavior for multiple opens. This patch adds a refcount for the opens of the device, and applies the cleanup only when all files get closed. As both fb_deferred_io_open() and _close() are called always in the fb_info lock (mutex), it's safe to use the normal int for the refcounting. Also, a useless BUG_ON() is dropped.
