2009-05-02Subject: [PATCH] br2684: restore net_dev initializationRabin Vincent
Commit 0ba25ff4c669e5395110ba6ab4958a97a9f96922 ("br2684: convert to net_device_ops") inadvertently deleted the initialization of the net_dev pointer in the br2684_dev structure, leading to crashes. This patch adds it back. Reported-by: Mikko Vinni <mmvinni@yahoo.com> Tested-by: Mikko Vinni <mmvinni@yahoo.com> Signed-off-by: Rabin Vincent <rabin@rab.in> Signed-off-by: David S. 2009-03-31proc 2/2: remove struct proc_dir_entry::ownerAlexey Dobriyan
Setting ->owner as done currently (pde->owner = THIS_MODULE) is racy as correctly noted at bug #12454. Someone can lookup entry with NULL ->owner, thus not pinning enything, and release it later resulting in module refcount underflow. We can keep ->owner and supply it at registration time like ->proc_fops and ->data. But this leaves ->owner as easy-manipulative field (just one C assignment) and somebody will forget to unpin previous/pin current module when switching ->owner. ->proc_fops is declared as "const" which should give some thoughts. ->read_proc/->write_proc were just fixed to not require ->owner for protection. rmmod'ed directories will be empty and return "." and ".." -- no harm. And directories with tricky enough readdir and lookup shouldn't be modular. We definitely don't want such modular code. Removing ->owner will also make PDE smaller. So, let's nuke it. Kudos to Jeff Layton for reminding about this, let's say, oversight. http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12454 Signed-off-by: Alexey Dobriyan <adobriyan@gmail.com>

2008-12-08netdevice: Kill netdev->privWang Chen
This is the last shoot of this series. After I removing all directly reference of netdev->priv, I am killing "priv" of "struct net_device" and fixing relative comments/docs. Anyone will not be allowed to reference netdev->priv directly. If you want to reference the memory of private data, use netdev_priv() instead. If the private data is not allocted when alloc_netdev(), use netdev->ml_priv to point that memory after you creating that private data. 2008-12-03atm: 32-bit ioctl compatibilityDavid Woodhouse
We lack compat ioctl support through most of the ATM code. This patch deals with most of it, and I can now at least use BR2684 and PPPoATM with 32-bit userspace. I haven't added a .compat_ioctl method to struct atm_ioctl, because AFAICT none of the current users need any conversion -- so we can just call the ->ioctl() method in every case. I looked at br2684, clip, lec, mpc, pppoatm and atmtcp. In svc_compat_ioctl() the only mangling which is needed is to change COMPAT_ATM_ADDPARTY to ATM_ADDPARTY. Although it's defined as _IOW('a', ATMIOC_SPECIAL+4,struct atm_iobuf) it doesn't actually _take_ a struct atm_iobuf as an argument -- it takes a struct sockaddr_atmsvc, which _is_ the same between 32-bit and 64-bit code, so doesn't need conversion. Almost all of vcc_ioctl() would have been identical, so I converted that into a core do_vcc_ioctl() function with an 'int compat' argument. I've done the same with atm_dev_ioctl(), where there _are_ a few differences, but still it's relatively contained and there would otherwise have been a lot of duplication. I haven't done any of the actual device-specific ioctls, although I've added a compat_ioctl method to struct atmdev_ops. 2008-11-12netdevice: safe convert to netdev_priv() #part-4Wang Chen
We have some reasons to kill netdev->priv: 1. netdev->priv is equal to netdev_priv(). 2. netdev_priv() wraps the calculation of netdev->priv's offset, obviously netdev_priv() is more flexible than netdev->priv. But we cann't kill netdev->priv, because so many drivers reference to it directly. This patch is a safe convert for netdev->priv to netdev_priv(netdev). Since all of the netdev->priv is only for read. But it is too big to be sent in one mail. I split it to 4 parts and make every part smaller than 100,000 bytes, which is max size allowed by vger. 2008-04-08[NET]: Undo code bloat in hot paths due to print_mac().David S. Miller
If print_mac() is used inside of a pr_debug() the compiler can't see that the call is redundant so still performs it even of pr_debug() ends up being a nop. So don't use print_mac() in such cases in hot code paths, use MAC_FMT et al. instead. As noted by Joe Perches, pr_debug() could be modified to handle this better, but that is a change to an interface used by the entire kernel and thus needs to be validated carefully. 2008-01-28[NETNS]: Modify the neighbour table code so it handles multiple network ↵Eric W. Biederman
namespaces I'm actually surprised at how much was involved. At first glance it appears that the neighbour table data structures are already split by network device so all that should be needed is to modify the user interface commands to filter the set of neighbours by the network namespace of their devices. However a couple things turned up while I was reading through the code. The proxy neighbour table allows entries with no network device, and the neighbour parms are per network device (except for the defaults) so they now need a per network namespace default. So I updated the two structures (which surprised me) with their very own network namespace parameter. Updated the relevant lookup and destroy routines with a network namespace parameter and modified the code that interacts with users to filter out neighbour table entries for devices of other namespaces. I'm a little concerned that we can modify and display the global table configuration and from all network namespaces. But this appears good enough for now. I keep thinking modifying the neighbour table to have per network namespace instances of each table type would should be cleaner. The hash table is already dynamically sized so there are it is not a limiter. The default parameter would be straight forward to take care of. However when I look at the how the network table is built and used I still find some assumptions that there is only a single neighbour table for each type of table in the kernel. The netlink operations, neigh_seq_start, the non-core network users that call neigh_lookup. So while it might be doable it would require more refactoring than my current approach of just doing a little extra filtering in the code. Signed-off-by: Eric W. 2008-01-28[NET]: Name magic constants in sock_wake_async()Pavel Emelyanov
The sock_wake_async() performs a bit different actions depending on "how" argument. Unfortunately this argument ony has numerical magic values. I propose to give names to their constants to help people reading this function callers understand what's going on without looking into this function all the time. I suppose this is 2.6.25 material, but if it's not (or the naming seems poor/bad/awful), I can rework it against the current net-2.6 tree.
