2010-12-14net: Abstract default MTU metric calculation behind an accessor.David S. Miller
Like RTAX_ADVMSS, make the default calculation go through a dst_ops method rather than caching the computation in the routing cache entries. Now dst metrics are pretty much left as-is when new entries are created, thus optimizing metric sharing becomes a real possibility. Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
2010-12-13net: Abstract default ADVMSS behind an accessor.David S. Miller
Make all RTAX_ADVMSS metric accesses go through a new helper function, dst_metric_advmss(). Leave the actual default metric as "zero" in the real metric slot, and compute the actual default value dynamically via a new dst_ops AF specific callback. For stacked IPSEC routes, we use the advmss of the path which preserves existing behavior. Unlike ipv4/ipv6, DecNET ties the advmss to the mtu and thus updates advmss on pmtu updates. This inconsistency in advmss handling results in more raw metric accesses than I wish we ended up with. Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
2010-12-09net: Abstract away all dst_entry metrics accesses.David S. Miller
Use helper functions to hide all direct accesses, especially writes, to dst_entry metrics values. This will allow us to: 1) More easily change how the metrics are stored. 2) Implement COW for metrics. In particular this will help us put metrics into the inetpeer cache if that is what we end up doing. We can make the _metrics member a pointer instead of an array, initially have it point at the read-only metrics in the FIB, and then on the first set grab an inetpeer entry and point the _metrics member there. 2010-11-08decnet: RCU conversion and get rid of dev_base_lockEric Dumazet
While tracking dev_base_lock users, I found decnet used it in dnet_select_source(), but for a wrong purpose: Writers only hold RTNL, not dev_base_lock, so readers must use RCU if they cannot use RTNL. Adds an rcu_head in struct dn_ifaddr and handle proper RCU management. Adds __rcu annotation in dn_route as well. 2010-10-11net dst: use a percpu_counter to track entriesEric Dumazet
struct dst_ops tracks number of allocated dst in an atomic_t field, subject to high cache line contention in stress workload. Switch to a percpu_counter, to reduce number of time we need to dirty a central location. Place it on a separate cache line to avoid dirtying read only fields. 2010-10-05net neigh: RCU conversion of neigh hash tableEric Dumazet
David This is the first step for RCU conversion of neigh code. Next patches will convert hash_buckets[] and "struct neighbour" to RCU protected objects. Thanks [PATCH net-next] net neigh: RCU conversion of neigh hash table Instead of storing hash_buckets, hash_mask and hash_rnd in "struct neigh_table", a new structure is defined : struct neigh_hash_table { struct neighbour **hash_buckets; unsigned int hash_mask; __u32 hash_rnd; struct rcu_head rcu; }; And "struct neigh_table" has an RCU protected pointer to such a neigh_hash_table. This means the signature of (*hash)() function changed: We need to add a third parameter with the actual hash_rnd value, since this is not anymore a neigh_table field. 2010-04-26net: rtnetlink: decouple rtnetlink address families from real address familiesPatrick McHardy
Decouple rtnetlink address families from real address families in socket.h to be able to add rtnetlink interfaces to code that is not a real address family without increasing AF_MAX/NPROTO. This will be used to add support for multicast route dumping from all tables as the proc interface can't be extended to support anything but the main table without breaking compatibility. This partialy undoes the patch to introduce independant families for routing rules and converts ipmr routing rules to a new rtnetlink family. Similar to that patch, values up to 127 are reserved for real address families, values above that may be used arbitrarily. Signed-off-by: Patrick McHardy <kaber@trash.net>

2010-04-13net: sk_dst_cache RCUificationEric Dumazet
With latest CONFIG_PROVE_RCU stuff, I felt more comfortable to make this work. sk->sk_dst_cache is currently protected by a rwlock (sk_dst_lock) This rwlock is readlocked for a very small amount of time, and dst entries are already freed after RCU grace period. This calls for RCU again :) This patch converts sk_dst_lock to a spinlock, and use RCU for readers. __sk_dst_get() is supposed to be called with rcu_read_lock() or if socket locked by user, so use appropriate rcu_dereference_check() condition (rcu_read_lock_held() || sock_owned_by_user(sk)) This patch avoids two atomic ops per tx packet on UDP connected sockets, for example, and permits sk_dst_lock to be much less dirtied. 2010-03-30include cleanup: Update gfp.h and slab.h includes to prepare for breaking ↵Tejun Heo
implicit slab.h inclusion from percpu.h percpu.h is included by sched.h and module.h and thus ends up being included when building most .c files. percpu.h includes slab.h which in turn includes gfp.h making everything defined by the two files universally available and complicating inclusion dependencies. percpu.h -> slab.h dependency is about to be removed. Prepare for this change by updating users of gfp and slab facilities include those headers directly instead of assuming availability. As this conversion needs to touch large number of source files, the following script is used as the basis of conversion. http://userweb.kernel.org/~tj/misc/slabh-sweep.py The script does the followings. * Scan files for gfp and slab usages and update includes such that only the necessary includes are there. ie. if only gfp is used, gfp.h, if slab is used, slab.h. * When the script inserts a new include, it looks at the include blocks and try to put the new include such that its order conforms to its surrounding. It's put in the include block which contains core kernel includes, in the same order that the rest are ordered - alphabetical, Christmas tree, rev-Xmas-tree or at the end if there doesn't seem to be any matching order. * If the script can't find a place to put a new include (mostly because the file doesn't have fitting include block), it prints out an error message indicating which .h file needs to be added to the file. The conversion was done in the following steps. 1. The initial automatic conversion of all .c files updated slightly over 4000 files, deleting around 700 includes and adding ~480 gfp.h and ~3000 slab.h inclusions. The script emitted errors for ~400 files. 2. Each error was manually checked. Some didn't need the inclusion, some needed manual addition while adding it to implementation .h or embedding .c file was more appropriate for others. This step added inclusions to around 150 files. 3. The script was run again and the output was compared to the edits from #2 to make sure no file was left behind. 4. Several build tests were done and a couple of problems were fixed. e.g. lib/decompress_*.c used malloc/free() wrappers around slab APIs requiring slab.h to be added manually. 5. The script was run on all .h files but without automatically editing them as sprinkling gfp.h and slab.h inclusions around .h files could easily lead to inclusion dependency hell. Most gfp.h inclusion directives were ignored as stuff from gfp.h was usually wildly available and often used in preprocessor macros. Each slab.h inclusion directive was examined and added manually as necessary. 6. percpu.h was updated not to include slab.h. 7. Build test were done on the following configurations and failures were fixed. CONFIG_GCOV_KERNEL was turned off for all tests (as my distributed build env didn't work with gcov compiles) and a few more options had to be turned off depending on archs to make things build (like ipr on powerpc/64 which failed due to missing writeq). * x86 and x86_64 UP and SMP allmodconfig and a custom test config. * powerpc and powerpc64 SMP allmodconfig * sparc and sparc64 SMP allmodconfig * ia64 SMP allmodconfig * s390 SMP allmodconfig * alpha SMP allmodconfig * um on x86_64 SMP allmodconfig 8. percpu.h modifications were reverted so that it could be applied as a separate patch and serve as bisection point. Given the fact that I had only a couple of failures from tests on step 6, I'm fairly confident about the coverage of this conversion patch. If there is a breakage, it's likely to be something in one of the arch headers which should be easily discoverable easily on most builds of the specific arch. Update rcu_dereference() primitives to use new lockdep-based checking. The rcu_dereference() in __in6_dev_get() may be protected either by rcu_read_lock() or RTNL, per Eric Dumazet. 2009-09-22mm: replace various uses of num_physpages by totalram_pagesJan Beulich
Sizing of memory allocations shouldn't depend on the number of physical pages found in a system, as that generally includes (perhaps a huge amount of) non-RAM pages. The amount of what actually is usable as storage should instead be used as a basis here. Some of the calculations (i.e. those not intending to use high memory) should likely even use (totalram_pages - totalhigh_pages).
