2025-05-29Merge patch series "Remove <env.h> from <net.h>"Tom Rini
Tom Rini <trini@konsulko.com> says: Hey all, This is a v3 of Simon's series[1] and depends on the series[2] I posted the other day that removes <env.h> from <command.h>. With this series done, I believe we've tackled all of the current cases of headers which include <env.h> without directly needing it. Much of this series is in fact Simon's v2 with the main differneces being: - Removing <env.h> from <net.h> at the end - Removing env_to_ip() given how little it's used rather than shuffling around where it's declared and un-inline'ing it. For a rarely used helper, this ends up being cleaner I think. Especially looking at some of the users (which called env_get repeatedly). If there's strong opinion here about using the other method[3] we can do that instead. - Setting aside for now how to handle CMD_ELF=y and NO_NET=y because today it's actually fine as we unconditionally build lib/net_utils.c where string_to_ip() is defined. I'm unsure if a further series is warranted here or not. We rely on link-time optimization to keep code readable too. 2025-05-29global: Avoid indirect inclusion of <env.h> from <net.h>Tom Rini
Now that env_get_ip() has been removed, the include file <net.h> does not need anything from <env.h>. Furthermore, include/env.h itself includes other headers which can lead to longer indirect inclusion paths. To prepare to remove <env.h> from <net.h> fix all of the remaining places which had relied on this indirect inclusion to instead include <env.h> directly. 2025-05-25efi_loader: Run dhcp if an http boot option is selectedIlias Apalodimas
The EFI boot manager relies on having an IP address before trying to boot an EFI HTTP(s) boot entry. However, defining it as a boot or pre-boot command is not always the right answer since it will unconditionally add delay to the board boot, even if we don't boot over the network. So let's do a DHCP request from the boot manager, if 'ipaddr' is empty and fail early if we don't have an address. 2025-04-11efi_loader: efi_load_initrd: provide a memory mapped initrdAdriano Cordova
U-Boot can pass an initrd to subsequent boot stages via the EFI_LOAD_FILE2_PROTOCOL. The current implementation only supports this functionality via the efi boot manager: the initrd is taken from the load options of the BootCurrent variable. This commit adds support for registering a memory mapped initrd, e.g. loaded from a FIT image. For now this new method takes precedence over loading the initrd from the BootCurrent variable (if both are present) because the BootCurrent variable is not cleared on exiting the boot manager. 2025-03-26efi_loader: remove memory occupied by a ramdisk from EFI memory mapIlias Apalodimas
ACPI has NFIT and NVDIMM support to provide ramdisks to the OS. Linux and device trees have support for persistent memory(pmem) devices. The firmware can then add a pmem node for the region of memory occupied by the ramdisk when passing the device-tree to the OS. It's worth noting that for linux to instantiate the /dev/pmemX device, the memory described in the pmem node has to be omitted from the EFI memory map we hand over to the OS if ZONE_DEVICES and SPARSEMEM is enabled. With those enabled the pmem driver ends up calling devm_memremap_pages() instead of devm_memremap(). The latter works whether the memory is omitted or marked as reserved, but mapping pages only works if the memory is omitted. On top of that, depending on how the kernel is configured, that memory area must be page aligned or 2MiB aligned. PowerPC is an exception here and requires 16MiB alignment, but since we don't have EFI support for it, limit the alignment to 2MiB. Ensure that the ISO image is 2MiB aligned and remove the region occupied by the image from the EFI memory map. 2024-01-13efi_loader: Clean up efi_dp_append and efi_dp_concatIlias Apalodimas
Looking back at the initrd storing functionality, we introduced three functions, efi_dp_append_or_concatenate(), efi_dp_append/concat(). In hindsight we could have simplified that by a lot. First of all none of the functions append anything. They all allocate a new device path and concatenate the contents of two device paths in one. A boolean parameter controls the final device path -- if that's true an end node is injected between the two device paths. So let's rewrite this and make it a bit easier to read. Get rid of efi_dp_append(), efi_dp_concat() and rename efi_dp_append_or_concatenate() to efi_dp_concat(). This is far more intuitive and the only adjustment that is needed is an extra boolean argument on all callsites. Signed-off-by: Ilias Apalodimas <ilias.apalodimas@linaro.org>

2023-11-18efi_loader: support boot from URI device pathMasahisa Kojima
This supports to boot from the URI device path. When user selects the URI device path, bootmgr downloads the file using wget into the address specified by loadaddr env variable. If the file is .iso or .img file, mount the image with blkmap then try to boot with the default file(e.g. EFI/BOOT/BOOTAA64.EFI). Since boot option indicating the default file is automatically created when new disk is detected, system can boot by selecting the automatically created blkmap boot option. If the file is PE-COFF file, load and start the downloaded file. The buffer used to download the ISO image file must be reserved to avoid the unintended access to the image and expose the ramdisk to the OS. For PE-COFF file case, this memory reservation is done in LoadImage Boot Service. 2022-09-14bootmenu: add removable media entriesMasahisa Kojima
UEFI specification requires booting from removal media using a architecture-specific default image name such as BOOTAA64.EFI. This commit adds the removable media entries into bootmenu, so that user can select the removable media and boot with default image. The bootmenu automatically enumerates the possible bootable media devices supporting EFI_SIMPLE_FILE_SYSTEM_PROTOCOL, add it as new UEFI boot option(BOOT####) and update BootOrder variable. This automatically generated UEFI boot option has the dedicated guid in the optional_data to distinguish it from the UEFI boot option user adds manually. This optional_data is removed when the efi bootmgr loads the selected UEFI boot option. This commit also provides the BOOT#### variable maintenance feature. Depending on the system hardware setup, some devices may not exist at a later system boot, so bootmenu checks the available device in each bootmenu invocation and automatically removes the BOOT#### variable corrensponding to the non-existent media device. 2022-05-28efi_loader: bootmgr: fix a problem in loading an image from a short-pathAKASHI Takahiro
Booting from a short-form device path which starts with the first element being a File Path Media Device Path failed because it doesn't contain any valid device with simple file system protocol and efi_dp_find_obj() in efi_load_image_from_path() will return NULL. For instance, /VenHw(e61d73b9-a384-4acc-aeab-82e828f3628b)/Scsi(0,0)/\helloworld.efi -> shortened version: /\helloworld.efi With this patch applied, all the media devices with simple file system protocol are enumerated and the boot manager attempts to boot temporarily generated device paths one-by-one. This new implementation is still a bit incompatible with the UEFI specification in terms of: * not creating real boot options * not try "If a device does not support the EFI_SIMPLE_FILE_SYSTEM_PROTOCOL, but supports the EFI_BLOCK_IO_PROTOCOL protocol, then the EFI Boot Service ConnectController must be called for this device with DriverImageHandle and RemainingDevicePath set to NULL and the Recursive flag is set to TRUE." 2022-05-03efi_loader: bootmgr: add booting from removable mediaAKASHI Takahiro
Under the current implementation, booting from removable media using a architecture-specific default image name, say BOOTAA64.EFI, is supported only in distro_bootcmd script. See the commit 74522c898b35 ("efi_loader: Add distro boot script for removable media"). This is, however, half-baked implementation because 1) UEFI specification requires this feature to be implemented as part of Boot Manager's responsibility: 3 - Boot Manager 3.5.1 Boot via the Simple File Protocol When booting via the EFI_SIMPLE_FILE_SYSTEM_PROTOCOL, the FilePath will start with a device path that points to the device that implements the EFI_SIMPLE_FILE_SYSTEM_PROTOCOL or the EFI_BLOCK_IO_PROTOCOL. The next part of the FilePath may point to the file name, including subdirectories, which contain the bootable image. If the file name is a null device path, the file name must be generated from the rules defined below. ... 3.5.1.1 Removable Media Boot Behavior To generate a file name when none is present in the FilePath, the firmware must append a default file name in the form \EFI\BOOT\BOOT{machine type short-name}.EFI ... 2) So (1) entails the hehavior that the user's preference of boot media order should be determined by Boot#### and BootOrder variables. With this patch, the semantics mentioned above is fully implemented. For example, if you want to boot the system from USB and SCSI in this order, * define Boot0001 which contains only a device path to the USB device (without any file path/name) * define Boot0002 which contains only a device path to the SCSI device, and * set BootOrder to Boot0001:Boot0002 To avoid build error for sandbox, default file name "BOOTSANDBOX.efi" is defined even if it is out of scope of UEFI specification. 2021-03-25efi_loader: Replace config option for initrd loadingIlias Apalodimas
Up to now we install EFI_LOAD_FILE2_PROTOCOL to load an initrd unconditionally. Although we correctly return various EFI exit codes depending on the file status (i.e EFI_NO_MEDIA, EFI_NOT_FOUND etc), the kernel loader, only falls back to the cmdline interpreted initrd if the protocol is not installed. This creates a problem for EFI installers, since they won't be able to load their own initrd and continue the installation. It also makes the feature hard to use, since we can either have a single initrd or we have to recompile u-boot if the filename changes. So let's introduce a different logic that will decouple the initrd path from the config option we currently have. When defining a UEFI BootXXXX we can use the filepathlist and store a file path pointing to our initrd. Specifically the EFI spec describes: "The first element of the array is a device path that describes the device and location of the Image for this load option. Other device paths may optionally exist in the FilePathList, but their usage is OSV specific" When the EFI application is launched through the bootmgr, we'll try to interpret the extra device path. If that points to a file that exists on our disk, we'll now install the load_file2 and the efi-stub will be able to use it. This opens up another path using U-Boot and defines a new boot flow. A user will be able to control the kernel/initrd pairs without explicit cmdline args or GRUB.
