2026-01-28net: ethernet: neterion: s2io: remove unused driverEthan Nelson-Moore
The s2io driver supports Exar (formerly Neterion and S2io) PCI-X 10 Gigabit Ethernet cards. Hardware supporting PCI-X has not been manufactured in years. On x86, it was quickly replaced by PCIe. While it stuck around longer on POWER hardware, the last POWER hardware to support it was POWER7, which is not supported by ppc64le Linux distributions. The last supported mainstream ppc64 Linux distribution was RHEL 7; while it is still supported under ELS, ELS is only available for x86 and IBM Z. It is possible to use many PCI-X cards in standard PCI slots (which are still available on new motherboards), but it does not make sense to do so for 10 Gigabit Ethernet because the maximum bandwidth of standard PCI is only 1067 Mbps. It is therefore highly unlikely that this driver is still being used. Remove the driver, and move the former maintainer to the CREDITS file (restoring credit for the vxge driver, which was removed in commit f05643a0f60b ("eth: remove neterion/vxge"). 2026-01-20net: remove HIPPI support and RoadRunner HIPPI driverEthan Nelson-Moore
HIPPI has not been relevant for over two decades. It was rapidly eclipsed by Fibre Channel, and even when it was new, it was confined to very high-end hardware. The HIPPI code has only received tree-wide changes and fixes by inspection in the entire Git history. Remove HIPPI support and the rrunner HIPPI driver, and move the former maintainer to the CREDITS file. Keep the include/uapi/linux/if_hippi.h header because it is used by the TUN code, and to avoid breaking userspace, however unlikely that may be. 2026-01-15net: ethernet: dnet: remove driverHeiner Kallweit
This legacy platform driver was used with some Qong board. Support for this board was removed with commit c93197b0041d ("ARM: imx: Remove i.MX31 board files") in 2020. So remove this now orphaned driver. 2025-11-22crypto: ansi_cprng - Remove unused ansi_cprng algorithmEric Biggers
Remove ansi_cprng, since it's obsolete and unused, as confirmed at https://lore.kernel.org/r/aQxpnckYMgAAOLpZ@gondor.apana.org.au/ This was originally added in 2008, apparently as a FIPS approved random number generator. Whether this has ever belonged upstream is questionable. Either way, ansi_cprng is no longer usable for this purpose, since it's been superseded by the more modern algorithms in crypto/drbg.c, and FIPS itself no longer allows it. (NIST SP 800-131A Rev 1 (2015) says that RNGs based on ANSI X9.31 will be disallowed after 2015. NIST SP 800-131A Rev 2 (2019) confirms they are now disallowed.) Therefore, there is no reason to keep it around. 2025-11-21serial: drop SERIAL_8250_DEPRECATED_OPTIONSJiri Slaby (SUSE)
In 3.7, 8250 was unintentionally renamed to 8250_core. This happened in the commit 835d844d1a28 (8250_pnp: do pnp probe before legacy probe). This made 8250.<xxxx> module options effectively defunct. Instead, 8250_core.<xxxx> worked. In 3.9, the commit f2b8dfd9e480 (serial: 8250: Keep 8250.<xxxx> module options functional after driver rename) made the original options work again by introducing a hack. Later in 3.9, the commit 9196d8acd7f9 (TTY: 8250, revert module name change) changed the module name back to 8250 (from 8250_core). Since then, the hack was there to support the transient 8250_core.<xxxx> options. Those were present only in the 3.7..3.9 range. These transient options were deprecated by 9326b047e4fd (TTY: 8250, deprecated 8250_core.* options) in v3.9 too. Now, after those 12 years, it is time to get rid of this hack completely. Commit d6ace46c82fd ("ext4: remove obsolete EXT3 config options") removed the obsolete EXT3_CONFIG options, since it had been over a decade since fs/ext3 had been removed. Unfortunately, there were a number of defconfigs that still used CONFIG_EXT3_FS which the cleanup commit didn't fix up. This led to a large number of defconfig test builds to fail. Oops. git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/ebiggers/linux Pull crypto library updates from Eric Biggers: - Add a RISC-V optimized implementation of Poly1305. This code was written by Andy Polyakov and contributed by Zhihang Shao. - Migrate the MD5 code into lib/crypto/, and add KUnit tests for MD5. Yes, it's still the 90s, and several kernel subsystems are still using MD5 for legacy use cases. As long as that remains the case, it's helpful to clean it up in the same way as I've been doing for other algorithms. 2025-08-26lib/crypto: mips/md5: Migrate optimized code into libraryEric Biggers
Instead of exposing the mips-optimized MD5 code via mips-specific crypto_shash algorithms, instead just implement the md5_blocks() library function. This is much simpler, it makes the MD5 library functions be mips-optimized, and it fixes the longstanding issue where the mips-optimized MD5 code was disabled by default. MD5 still remains available through crypto_shash, but individual architectures no longer need to handle it. 2025-07-14lib/crypto: mips/sha1: Migrate optimized code into libraryEric Biggers
Instead of exposing the mips-optimized SHA-1 code via mips-specific crypto_shash algorithms, instead just implement the sha1_blocks() library function. This is much simpler, it makes the SHA-1 library functions be mips-optimized, and it fixes the longstanding issue where the mips-optimized SHA-1 code was disabled by default. SHA-1 still remains available through crypto_shash, but individual architectures no longer need to handle it. 2025-07-03netfilter: conntrack: remove DCCP protocol supportPablo Neira Ayuso
The DCCP socket family has now been removed from this tree, see: 8bb3212be4b4 ("Merge branch 'net-retire-dccp-socket'") Remove connection tracking and NAT support for this protocol, this should not pose a problem because no DCCP traffic is expected to be seen on the wire. As for the code for matching on dccp header for iptables and nftables, mark it as deprecated and keep it in place. Ruleset restoration is an atomic operation. Without dccp matching support, an astray match on dccp could break this operation leaving your computer with no policy in place, so let's follow a more conservative approach for matches. Add CONFIG_NFT_EXTHDR_DCCP which is set to 'n' by default to deprecate dccp extension support. Similarly, label CONFIG_NETFILTER_XT_MATCH_DCCP as deprecated too and also set it to 'n' by default. Code to match on DCCP protocol from ebtables also remains in place, this is just a few checks on IPPROTO_DCCP from _check() path which is exercised when ruleset is loaded. There is another use of IPPROTO_DCCP from the _check() path in the iptables multiport match. Another check for IPPROTO_DCCP from the packet in the reject target is also removed. So let's schedule removal of the dccp matching for a second stage, this should not interfer with the dccp retirement since this is only matching on the dccp header. Cc: "David S. git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/netdev/net-next Pull networking updates from Paolo Abeni: "Core: - Implement the Device Memory TCP transmit path, allowing zero-copy data transmission on top of TCP from e.g. GPU memory to the wire. - Move all the IPv6 routing tables management outside the RTNL scope, under its own lock and RCU. The route control path is now 3x times faster. - Convert queue related netlink ops to instance lock, reducing again the scope of the RTNL lock. This improves the control plane scalability. - Refactor the software crc32c implementation, removing unneeded abstraction layers and improving significantly the related micro-benchmarks. - Optimize the GRO engine for UDP-tunneled traffic, for a 10% performance improvement in related stream tests. - Cover more per-CPU storage with local nested BH locking; this is a prep work to remove the current per-CPU lock in local_bh_disable() on PREMPT_RT. - Introduce and use nlmsg_payload helper, combining buffer bounds verification with accessing payload carried by netlink messages. Netfilter: - Rewrite the procfs conntrack table implementation, improving considerably the dump performance. A lot of user-space tools still use this interface. - Implement support for wildcard netdevice in netdev basechain and flowtables. - Integrate conntrack information into nft trace infrastructure. - Export set count and backend name to userspace, for better introspection. BPF: - BPF qdisc support: BPF-qdisc can be implemented with BPF struct_ops programs and can be controlled in similar way to traditional qdiscs using the "tc qdisc" command. - Refactor the UDP socket iterator, addressing long standing issues WRT duplicate hits or missed sockets. Protocols: - Improve TCP receive buffer auto-tuning and increase the default upper bound for the receive buffer; overall this improves the single flow maximum thoughput on 200Gbs link by over 60%. - Add AFS GSSAPI security class to AF_RXRPC; it provides transport security for connections to the AFS fileserver and VL server. - Improve TCP multipath routing, so that the sources address always matches the nexthop device. - Introduce SO_PASSRIGHTS for AF_UNIX, to allow disabling SCM_RIGHTS, and thus preventing DoS caused by passing around problematic FDs. - Retire DCCP socket. DCCP only receives updates for bugs, and major distros disable it by default. Its removal allows for better organisation of TCP fields to reduce the number of cache lines hit in the fast path. - Extend TCP drop-reason support to cover PAWS checks. Driver API: - Reorganize PTP ioctl flag support to require an explicit opt-in for the drivers, avoiding the problem of drivers not rejecting new unsupported flags. - Converted several device drivers to timestamping APIs. - Introduce per-PHY ethtool dump helpers, improving the support for dump operations targeting PHYs. Tests and tooling: - Add support for classic netlink in user space C codegen, so that ynl-c can now read, create and modify links, routes addresses and qdisc layer configuration. - Add ynl sub-types for binary attributes, allowing ynl-c to output known struct instead of raw binary data, clarifying the classic netlink output. - Extend MPTCP selftests to improve the code-coverage. - Add tests for XDP tail adjustment in AF_XDP. New hardware / drivers: - OpenVPN virtual driver: offload OpenVPN data channels processing to the kernel-space, increasing the data transfer throughput WRT the user-space implementation. - Renesas glue driver for the gigabit ethernet RZ/V2H(P) SoC. - Broadcom asp-v3.0 ethernet driver. - AMD Renoir ethernet device. - ReakTek MT9888 2.5G ethernet PHY driver. - Aeonsemi 10G C45 PHYs driver. 2025-05-05crypto: mips/sha256 - implement library instead of shashEric Biggers
Instead of providing crypto_shash algorithms for the arch-optimized SHA-256 code, instead implement the SHA-256 library. This is much simpler, it makes the SHA-256 library functions be arch-optimized, and it fixes the longstanding issue where the arch-optimized SHA-256 was disabled by default. SHA-256 still remains available through crypto_shash, but individual architectures no longer need to handle it. 2025-04-11net: Retire DCCP socket.Kuniyuki Iwashima
DCCP was orphaned in 2021 by commit 054c4610bd05 ("MAINTAINERS: dccp: move Gerrit Renker to CREDITS"), which noted that the last maintainer had been inactive for five years. In recent years, it has become a playground for syzbot, and most changes to DCCP have been odd bug fixes triggered by syzbot. Apart from that, the only changes have been driven by treewide or networking API updates or adjustments related to TCP. Thus, in 2023, we announced we would remove DCCP in 2025 via commit b144fcaf46d4 ("dccp: Print deprecation notice."). Since then, only one individual has contacted the netdev mailing list. [0] There is ongoing research for Multipath DCCP. The repository is hosted on GitHub [1], and development is not taking place through the upstream community. While the repository is published under the GPLv2 license, the scheduling part remains proprietary, with a LICENSE file [2] stating: "This is not Open Source software." The researcher mentioned a plan to address the licensing issue, upstream the patches, and step up as a maintainer, but there has been no further communication since then. Maintaining DCCP for a decade without any real users has become a burden. Therefore, it's time to remove it. Removing DCCP will also provide significant benefits to TCP. It allows us to freely reorganize the layout of struct inet_connection_sock, which is currently shared with DCCP, and optimize it to reduce the number of cachelines accessed in the TCP fast path. Note that we keep DCCP netfilter modules as requested.
