2025-11-24drm: sti: fix device leaks at component probeJohan Hovold
Make sure to drop the references taken to the vtg devices by of_find_device_by_node() when looking up their driver data during component probe. Note that holding a reference to a platform device does not prevent its driver data from going away so there is no point in keeping the reference after the lookup helper returns. devm_drm_bridge_alloc() is the new API to be used for allocating (and partially initializing) a private driver struct embedding a struct drm_bridge. This driver was missed during the automated conversion in commit 9c399719cfb9 ("drm: convert many bridge drivers from devm_kzalloc() to devm_drm_bridge_alloc() API") and following commits. The lack of conversion for this driver is a bug since commit a7748dd127ea ("drm/bridge: get/put the bridge reference in drm_bridge_add/remove()") which is the first commmit having added a drm_bridge_get/put() pair and thus exposing the incorrect initial refcount issue. Fix this by switching the driver to the new API. This is the new API for allocating DRM bridges. This driver allocates the DRM bridge separately from the main driver private struct, which prevents using the new devm_drm_bridge_alloc() API. Simplify the code by replacing the struct drm_bridge pointer with an embedded struct drm_bridge inside the private struct, to make use of the new API with the same code flow. The no_capture_mute flag might differ from platform to platform, especially in the case of the wrapping implementations, like the upcoming DRM HDMI Codec framework. Move the flag next to all other flags in struct hdmi_codec_pdata. 2024-12-01Get rid of 'remove_new' relic from platform driver structLinus Torvalds
The continual trickle of small conversion patches is grating on me, and is really not helping. Just get rid of the 'remove_new' member function, which is just an alias for the plain 'remove', and had a comment to that effect: /* * .remove_new() is a relic from a prototype conversion of .remove(). * New drivers are supposed to implement .remove(). Once all drivers are * converted to not use .remove_new any more, it will be dropped. */ This was just a tree-wide 'sed' script that replaced '.remove_new' with '.remove', with some care taken to turn a subsequent tab into two tabs to make things line up. I did do some minimal manual whitespace adjustment for places that used spaces to line things up. Then I just removed the old (sic) .remove_new member function, and this is the end result. 2023-09-21drm: Call drm_atomic_helper_shutdown() at shutdown time for misc driversDouglas Anderson
Based on grepping through the source code these drivers appear to be missing a call to drm_atomic_helper_shutdown() at system shutdown time. Among other things, this means that if a panel is in use that it won't be cleanly powered off at system shutdown time. The fact that we should call drm_atomic_helper_shutdown() in the case of OS shutdown/restart comes straight out of the kernel doc "driver instance overview" in drm_drv.c. All of the drivers in this patch were fairly straightforward to fix since they already had a call to drm_atomic_helper_shutdown() at remove/unbind time but were just lacking one at system shutdown. The only hitch is that some of these drivers use the component model to register/unregister their DRM devices. The shutdown callback is part of the original device. The typical solution here, based on how other DRM drivers do this, is to keep track of whether the device is bound based on drvdata. In most cases the drvdata is the drm_device, so we can just make sure it is NULL when the device is not bound. In some drivers, this required minor code changes. To make things simpler, drm_atomic_helper_shutdown() has been modified to consider a NULL drm_device as a noop in the patch ("drm/atomic-helper: drm_atomic_helper_shutdown(NULL) should be a noop"). 2023-07-21drm: Explicitly include correct DT includesRob Herring
The DT of_device.h and of_platform.h date back to the separate of_platform_bus_type before it as merged into the regular platform bus. As part of that merge prepping Arm DT support 13 years ago, they "temporarily" include each other. They also include platform_device.h and of.h. As a result, there's a pretty much random mix of those include files used throughout the tree. In order to detangle these headers and replace the implicit includes with struct declarations, users need to explicitly include the correct includes. The .remove() callback for a platform driver returns an int which makes many driver authors wrongly assume it's possible to do error handling by returning an error code. However the value returned is (mostly) ignored and this typically results in resource leaks. To improve here there is a quest to make the remove callback return void. In the first step of this quest all drivers are converted to .remove_new() which already returns void. Trivially convert the sti drm drivers from always returning zero in the remove callback to the void returning variant. With clang's kernel control flow integrity (kCFI, CONFIG_CFI_CLANG), indirect call targets are validated against the expected function pointer prototype to make sure the call target is valid to help mitigate ROP attacks. If they are not identical, there is a failure at run time, which manifests as either a kernel panic or thread getting killed.
