2026-02-21Convert 'alloc_obj' family to use the new default GFP_KERNEL argumentLinus Torvalds
This was done entirely with mindless brute force, using git grep -l '\<k[vmz]*alloc_objs*(.*, GFP_KERNEL)' | xargs sed -i 's/\(alloc_objs*(.*\), GFP_KERNEL)/\1)/' to convert the new alloc_obj() users that had a simple GFP_KERNEL argument to just drop that argument. Note that due to the extreme simplicity of the scripting, any slightly more complex cases spread over multiple lines would not be triggered: they definitely exist, but this covers the vast bulk of the cases, and the resulting diff is also then easier to check automatically. 2026-02-21treewide: Replace kmalloc with kmalloc_obj for non-scalar typesKees Cook
This is the result of running the Coccinelle script from scripts/coccinelle/api/kmalloc_objs.cocci. The script is designed to avoid scalar types (which need careful case-by-case checking), and instead replace kmalloc-family calls that allocate struct or union object instances: Single allocations: kmalloc(sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_obj(TYPE, ...) Array allocations: kmalloc_array(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_objs(TYPE, COUNT, ...) Flex array allocations: kmalloc(struct_size(PTR, FAM, COUNT), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_flex(*PTR, FAM, COUNT, ...) 2025-08-25media: cadence: cdns-csi2rx: Support multiple pixels per clock cycleJai Luthra
The output pixel interface is a parallel bus (32 bits), which supports sending multiple pixels (1, 2 or 4) per clock cycle for smaller pixel widths like RAW8-RAW16. Dual-pixel and Quad-pixel modes can be a requirement if the export rate of the Cadence IP in Single-pixel mode maxes out before the maximum supported DPHY-RX frequency, which is the case with TI's integration of this IP [1]. So, we export a function that lets the downstream hardware block request a higher pixel-per-clock on a particular output pad. We check if we can support the requested pixels per clock given the known maximum for the currently configured format. If not, we set it to the highest feasible value and return this value to the caller. 2024-10-12media: Switch back to struct platform_driver::remove()Uwe Kleine-König
After commit 0edb555a65d1 ("platform: Make platform_driver::remove() return void") .remove() is (again) the right callback to implement for platform drivers. Convert all platform drivers below drivers/media to use .remove(), with the eventual goal to drop struct platform_driver::remove_new(). As .remove() and .remove_new() have the same prototypes, conversion is done by just changing the structure member name in the driver initializer. 2024-04-22media: cadence: csi2rx: configure DPHY before starting source streamPratyush Yadav
When the source device is operating above 1.5 Gbps per lane, it needs to send the Skew Calibration Sequence before sending any HS data. If the DPHY is initialized after the source stream is started, then it might miss the sequence and not be able to receive data properly. Move the start of source subdev to the end of the sequence to make sure everything is ready to receive data before the source starts streaming. 2023-12-04media: v4l2-subdev: Rename .init_cfg() operation to .init_state()Laurent Pinchart
The subdev .init_cfg() operation is affected by two issues: - It has long been extended to initialize a whole v4l2_subdev_state instead of just a v4l2_subdev_pad_config, but its name has stuck around. - Despite operating on a whole subdev state and not being directly exposed to the subdev users (either in-kernel or through the userspace API), .init_cfg() is categorized as a subdev pad operation. This participates in making the subdev API confusing for new developers. Fix it by renaming the operation to .init_state(), and make it a subdev internal operation. Firstly, there is no VC_EN bit present in the STREAM_DATA_CFG register. Bit 31 is part of the VL_SELECT field. Remove it completely. Secondly, it makes little sense to enable ith virtual channel for ith stream. Sure, there might be a use-case that demands it. But there might also be a use case that demands all streams to use the 0th virtual channel. Prefer this case over the former because it is less arbitrary and also makes it very clear what the limitations of the current driver is instead of giving a false impression that multiple virtual channels are supported. The notifier is added to the global notifier list when registered. When the module is removed, the struct csi2rx_priv in which the notifier is embedded, is destroyed. As a result the notifier list has a reference to a notifier that no longer exists. This causes invalid memory accesses when the list is iterated over. Similar for when the probe fails. media Kconfig has two entries associated to V4L API: VIDEO_DEV and VIDEO_V4L2. On Kernel 2.6.x, there were two V4L APIs, each one with its own flag. VIDEO_DEV were meant to: 1) enable Video4Linux and make its Kconfig options to appear; 2) it makes the Kernel build the V4L core. while VIDEO_V4L2 where used to distinguish between drivers that implement the newer API and drivers that implemented the former one. With time, such meaning changed, specially after the removal of all V4L version 1 drivers. At the current implementation, VIDEO_DEV only does (1): it enables the media options related to V4L, that now has: menu "Video4Linux options" visible if VIDEO_DEV source "drivers/media/v4l2-core/Kconfig" endmenu but it doesn't affect anymore the V4L core drivers. The rationale is that the V4L2 core has a "soft" dependency at the I2C bus, and now requires to select a number of other Kconfig options: config VIDEO_V4L2 tristate depends on (I2C || I2C=n) && VIDEO_DEV select RATIONAL select VIDEOBUF2_V4L2 if VIDEOBUF2_CORE default (I2C || I2C=n) && VIDEO_DEV In the past, merging them would be tricky, but it seems that it is now possible to merge those symbols, in order to simplify V4L dependencies. Let's keep VIDEO_DEV, as this one is used on some make *defconfig configurations. We have 'struct v4l2_subdev_pad_config' which contains configuration for a single pad used for the TRY functionality, and an array of those structs is passed to various v4l2_subdev_pad_ops. I was working on subdev internal routing between pads, and realized that there's no way to add TRY functionality for routes, which is not pad specific configuration. Adding a separate struct for try-route config wouldn't work either, as e.g. set-fmt needs to know the try-route configuration to propagate the settings. This patch adds a new struct, 'struct v4l2_subdev_state' (which at the moment only contains the v4l2_subdev_pad_config array) and the new struct is used in most of the places where v4l2_subdev_pad_config was used. All v4l2_subdev_pad_ops functions taking v4l2_subdev_pad_config are changed to instead take v4l2_subdev_state. The changes to drivers/media/v4l2-core/v4l2-subdev.c and include/media/v4l2-subdev.h were written by hand, and all the driver changes were done with the semantic patch below. The spatch needs to be applied to a select list of directories. 2021-02-06media: v4l2-async: Improve v4l2_async_notifier_add_*_subdev() APILaurent Pinchart
The functions that add an async subdev to an async subdev notifier take as an argument the size of the container structure they need to allocate. This is error prone, as passing an invalid size will not be caught by the compiler. Wrap those functions in macros that take a container type instead of a size, and cast the returned pointer to the desired type. The compiler will catch mistakes if the incorrect type is passed to the macro, as the assignment types won't match. 2021-02-06media: cadence: Use v4l2_async_notifier_add_fwnode_remote_subdevEzequiel Garcia
The use of v4l2_async_notifier_add_subdev will be discouraged. Drivers are instead encouraged to use a helper such as v4l2_async_notifier_add_fwnode_remote_subdev. This fixes a misuse of the API, as v4l2_async_notifier_add_subdev should get a kmalloc'ed struct v4l2_async_subdev, removing some boilerplate code while at it. Use the appropriate helper v4l2_async_notifier_add_fwnode_remote_subdev, which handles the needed setup, instead of open-coding it. There are lots of drivers that only work when the media controller and/or the V4L2 subdev APIs are present. Right now, someone need to first enable those APIs before using those drivers. Well, ideally, drivers, should, instead *optionally* depend on it, in order for PC camera drivers to be able to use them, but nowadays most drivers are UVC cameras, with don't require a sensor driver. So, be it. Let's instead make them select the MEDIA_CONTROLLER and the SUBDEV API, in order to make easier for people to be able of enabling them.
