2026-02-21Convert 'alloc_obj' family to use the new default GFP_KERNEL argumentLinus Torvalds
This was done entirely with mindless brute force, using git grep -l '\<k[vmz]*alloc_objs*(.*, GFP_KERNEL)' | xargs sed -i 's/\(alloc_objs*(.*\), GFP_KERNEL)/\1)/' to convert the new alloc_obj() users that had a simple GFP_KERNEL argument to just drop that argument. Note that due to the extreme simplicity of the scripting, any slightly more complex cases spread over multiple lines would not be triggered: they definitely exist, but this covers the vast bulk of the cases, and the resulting diff is also then easier to check automatically. For the same reason the 'flex' versions will be done as a separate conversion. Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>
2026-02-21treewide: Replace kmalloc with kmalloc_obj for non-scalar typesKees Cook
This is the result of running the Coccinelle script from scripts/coccinelle/api/kmalloc_objs.cocci. The script is designed to avoid scalar types (which need careful case-by-case checking), and instead replace kmalloc-family calls that allocate struct or union object instances: Single allocations: kmalloc(sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_obj(TYPE, ...) Array allocations: kmalloc_array(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_objs(TYPE, COUNT, ...) Flex array allocations: kmalloc(struct_size(PTR, FAM, COUNT), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_flex(*PTR, FAM, COUNT, ...) (where TYPE may also be *VAR) The resulting allocations no longer return "void *", instead returning "TYPE *". Signed-off-by: Kees Cook <kees@kernel.org>

2025-10-17media: samsung: s5p-jpeg: Drop unneeded v4l2_m2m_get_vq() NULL checkLaurent Pinchart
The v4l2_m2m_get_vq() function never returns NULL. In the set format handler, the check may have been intended to catch invalid format types, but that's not needed as the V4L2 core picks the appropriate VIDIOC_S_FMT ioctl handler based on the format type, so the type can't be incorrect. In the get format handler, the return value is not used for any purpose other than the NULL check, which was therefore probably intended to catch invalid format types. That's not needed for the same reason as in the set format handler. Drop the unneeded return value check and, as the function has no side effect, the unneeded function call as well. 2025-08-29media: s5p-mfc: remove an unused/uninitialized variableArnd Bergmann
The s5p_mfc_cmd_args structure in the v6 driver is never used, not initialized to anything other than zero, but as of clang-21 this causes a warning: drivers/media/platform/samsung/s5p-mfc/s5p_mfc_cmd_v6.c:45:7: error: variable 'h2r_args' is uninitialized when passed as a const pointer argument here [-Werror,-Wuninitialized-const-pointer] 45 | &h2r_args); | ^~~~~~~~ Just remove this for simplicity. 2025-08-13media: Replace file->private_data access with custom functionsLaurent Pinchart
Accessing file->private_data manually to retrieve the v4l2_fh pointer is error-prone, as the field is a void * and will happily cast implicitly to any pointer type. Replace all remaining locations that read the v4l2_fh pointer directly from file->private_data and cast it to driver-specific file handle structures with driver-specific functions that use file_to_v4l2_fh() and perform the same cast. No functional change is intended, this only paves the way to remove direct accesses to file->private_data and make V4L2 drivers safer. Other accesses to the field will be addressed separately. 2024-08-09media: platform: exynos-gsc: use 'time_left' variable with wait_event_timeout()Wolfram Sang
There is a confusing pattern in the kernel to use a variable named 'timeout' to store the result of wait_event_timeout() causing patterns like: timeout = wait_event_timeout(...) if (!timeout) return -ETIMEDOUT; with all kinds of permutations. Use 'time_left' as a variable to make the code self explaining. Fix to the proper variable type 'long' while here. 2024-02-23media: platform: replace of_graph_get_next_endpoint()Kuninori Morimoto
From DT point of view, in general, drivers should be asking for a specific port number because their function is fixed in the binding. of_graph_get_next_endpoint() doesn't match to this concept. Simply replace - of_graph_get_next_endpoint(xxx, NULL); + of_graph_get_endpoint_by_regs(xxx, 0, -1); Link: https://lore.kernel.org/r/20240202174941.GA310089-robh@kernel.org Signed-off-by: Kuninori Morimoto <kuninori.morimoto.gx@renesas.com> Signed-off-by: Sakari Ailus <sakari.ailus@linux.intel.com> Signed-off-by: Hans Verkuil <hverkuil-cisco@xs4all.nl>

2024-01-22media: s5p-mfc: drop static device variable in s5p_mfc_pm.cKrzysztof Kozlowski
Change the interface of power management functions in s5p_mfc_pm.c to accept the pointer to S5P MFC device structure. instead of relying on file-scope static variable. This makes code easier to read and modify in case more devices are added.
