The RX walk in axienet_dma_bd_release() stops at the first descriptor
without an skb, assuming that such a slot and all after it were never
filled. That holds on the axienet_dma_bd_init() error path, but not once
the ring has been running: when axienet_rx_poll() fails to allocate or
map a replacement buffer it leaves the slot it emptied with a NULL skb,
in the middle of a populated ring, until a later poll refills it.
Closing the interface before then leaks the skb and the streaming DMA
mapping of every descriptor after that slot, which can be most of the
ring, and is most likely under memory pressure.
The walk also frees each skb before unmapping it. With swiotlb, the
DMA_FROM_DEVICE unmap copies the bounce buffer back into the skb data
that was just freed, and on non-coherent platforms it invalidates cache
lines that may already belong to a new owner.
Skip empty slots instead of stopping at the first one. An emptied slot
still has a non-zero cntrl but its buffer is already unmapped, so the
skip has to cover the unmap too, which it does by coming before it.
Then unmap before freeing, as axienet_rx_poll() does.
This was reported by the Sashiko AI review bot.
Tested on the AXI Ethernet MAC of an ADVA TimeCard X2 (PCIe card, with
the built-in AXI DMA): traffic passes after each of ten down/up cycles,
each running axienet_dma_bd_release(), so the unmap-then-free order is
exercised on every buffer. A failed RX refill was not reproduced, so
the skip over an empty slot was not exercised.

axienet_start_xmit_dmaengine() bumps lp->tx_ring_head before
skb_to_sgvec(), dma_map_sg() and device_prep_slave_sg(), and none of
their error paths undo it. The skb is freed and nothing is submitted,
but the slot stays claimed. axienet_dma_tx_cb() walks tx_ring_tail
once per completion, so the next completion lands on the abandoned slot
and dereferences whatever skb pointer is left there: NULL if the slot
was never used or was already completed, or a stale skb that gets
consumed a second time. Every completion after that is accounted
against the wrong slot.
dma_map_sg() and device_prep_slave_sg() can fail at runtime, and so can
skb_to_sgvec() on a malformed skb. Only advance tx_ring_head once
those have succeeded. The completion callback can't run before
dmaengine_submit(), so claiming the slot just before that is fine.
dmaengine_submit() itself can also fail on xilinx_dma after a channel
error, and its return isn't checked either. That's a separate problem
and isn't changed here.
This was found by the Sashiko AI review of the skbuff BUG_ON() series.

axienet_dma_bd_release() walks the RX ring to unmap and free every
receive buffer before releasing it, but frees the TX descriptor ring
with dma_free_coherent() alone. Any descriptor that
axienet_free_tx_chain() had not yet reclaimed still holds its skb and
its streaming DMA mapping, and both are lost.
axienet_stop() disables TX NAPI and stops the DMA engine before calling
it, so nothing reclaims those descriptors afterwards. Bringing the
interface down while frames are in flight therefore leaks up to
lp->tx_bd_num skbs and mappings each time.
axienet_dma_err_handler() already walks the TX ring this way before it
restarts the DMA engine: it unmaps every descriptor whose cntrl is still
set - axienet_free_tx_chain() clears it on reclaim - frees any skb still
attached, and clears the descriptor. Move that loop into a helper,
axienet_free_tx_bufs(), and call it from axienet_dma_bd_release() too.
This relies on axienet_stop() having stopped the DMA engine first, as
the RX walk in the same function already does. The helper frees the
skbs with dev_kfree_skb_any(), as drops: in the error handler, which
runs from a workqueue, that frees them directly rather than deferring
them to softirq as dev_kfree_skb_irq() did.
The walk must not run on a ring that is not there. axienet_open() does
not check the result of the reset that runs axienet_dma_bd_init(), so
when that reset fails tx_bd_v is either still NULL or, after an earlier
close, points at the ring that close freed. Clear tx_bd_v and rx_bd_v
once their rings are freed, and skip the walk when tx_bd_v is NULL.
That also ends the second dma_free_coherent() of a stale ring which the
same path already did. On the axienet_dma_bd_init() error path the TX
ring has just been allocated zeroed, so the walk does nothing.
This was reported by the Sashiko AI review bot.
Tested on the AXI Ethernet MAC of an ADVA TimeCard X2 (PCIe card, with
the built-in AXI DMA): traffic passes, and after each of ten down/up
cycles and five module reloads, all made with traffic running and each
running axienet_dma_bd_release(), traffic resumes and nothing is logged.
The leak itself was not measured, and neither the failed-reset paths nor
axienet_dma_err_handler() were exercised.

axienet_tx_poll() reclaims every completed TX descriptor in one pass:
it passes lp->tx_bd_num to axienet_free_tx_chain() as the descriptor
limit, and @budget is only used as the napi_consume_skb() bulk-free
hint. It then returns the number of packets reclaimed, which is bounded
by the ring size rather than by the budget, so the poll can report more
work than it was given. This was seen after TX completion interrupts
had not been taken for a while and a full ring was reclaimed at once:
eth0: NAPI poll function axienet_tx_poll+0x0/0x180 [xilinx_emac]
returned 96, exceeding its budget of 64.
netpoll is affected as well. poll_one_napi() polls with a budget of 0
to reclaim the TX path only, and warns once if any work is reported.
TX completions are not budgeted work: Documentation/networking/napi.rst
lets a poll process any number of them. Do as bcmgenet does since
commit a58cdf56b6eb ("net: bcmgenet: complete Tx NAPI after one reclaim
pass"): reclaim the ring, complete NAPI with no work done, re-enable the
TX completion interrupt and return 0. Re-enabling the interrupt raises
it straight away if more completions are already pending, so none is
left behind. This also drops the extra poll that used to follow a full
budget's worth of completions, which only found an empty ring.
netpoll polls with a budget of 0 and must not complete NAPI, so skip
the completion then; napi_complete_done() refuses it in that case
anyway.

In the dmaengine path the driver pre-submits RX buffers and holds
in-flight TX buffers whose SKBs are DMA-mapped by the driver and freed
only in the completion callbacks. On ndo_stop() dmaengine_terminate_sync()
aborts these descriptors without running their callbacks, and the driver
then frees only the ring shells, leaking every SKB still owned by the
engine and its DMA mapping on each ifdown. With 128 RX buffers pre-posted
per channel, the mapping leak can eventually exhaust a limited IOMMU
aperture.
Clear the slot's skb in the TX and RX callbacks so a non-NULL skb marks a
slot that still owns a live, DMA-mapped buffer, and on stop unmap and free
every such buffer.
axienet_dma_rx_cb() runs from the DMA tasklet and re-arms the RX ring on
each completion, so it can race axienet_stop(): a completion may submit a
fresh buffer after dmaengine_terminate_sync() has returned, leaving the
channel armed with a buffer the teardown then frees while the engine may
still write into it (dma_release_channel() does not stop it either). Add a
lock that axienet_dma_rx_cb() holds across the @stopping check and the
resubmit, and axienet_stop() holds to set @stopping before terminating.
Once @stopping is set no callback can arm a new buffer, and any armed just
before is aborted by the terminate, so teardown only frees buffers the
engine no longer owns.

The module is built as xilinx_emac.ko while the platform driver it
registers is named xilinx_axienet. For a device tree instantiation that
mismatch does not matter, because the OF match table supplies the
modalias udev uses to load the module.
A device registered by name from another driver has no OF node and so no
OF modalias. It advertises platform:xilinx_axienet, which matches
nothing, and the device is created but never bound. ptp_ocp is going to
register the AXI Ethernet MAC of the ADVA TimeCard X2 this way, as a
child platform device described by a software node.
Add the corresponding MODULE_ALIAS so name-based instantiation can
autoload the driver, and give the name a define now that it is used in
more than one place.
Tested on the X2 with a local ptp_ocp change: with this patch the module
is loaded and binds when ptp_ocp registers the device; without it the
device stays unbound until xilinx_emac is loaded by hand.

axienet_probe() reads its configuration exclusively through the of_*
API, so the driver can only be instantiated from a device tree node.
The ADVA TimeCard X2 is a PCIe timing card, driven by ptp_ocp, whose
FPGA contains an AXI Ethernet MAC with an AXI DMA engine. ptp_ocp is
going to register the MAC as a child platform device described by a
software node, so that this driver runs it rather than a copy in
ptp_ocp. That needs the probe-time configuration to be readable from a
software node.
Convert only the lookups such a caller needs: "xlnx,rxmem", which probe
requires; "phy-mode"; the MAC address; and the PHY connection, which is
where phylink finds a "fixed-link" child. On a device tree this is a
no-op: device_property_read_u32() dispatches to the of_* implementation
when dev->fwnode is an OF node, phylink_of_phy_connect() is a wrapper
around phylink_fwnode_phy_connect(), and device_get_phy_mode() and
device_get_mac_address() are thin fwnode wrappers around the same
lookups. device_get_mac_address() also keeps the "mac-address" nvmem
cell fallback that of_get_mac_address() has.
Note that device_get_phy_mode() returns the mode as a positive value
rather than through an out parameter, so the error test changes from
"if (ret)" to "if (ret < 0)".
Everything else stays on the OF API. "xlnx,txcsum", "xlnx,rxcsum" and
"xlnx,switch-x-sgmii" are optional, and "xlnx,phy-type" is deprecated in
favour of "phy-mode". Without an OF node each of those lookups finds
nothing, exactly as for a device tree node that leaves them out: no
checksum offload, no runtime SGMII/1000BASE-X switching and a
fall-through to "phy-mode". The "dmas" test likewise selects the
built-in AXI DMA engine. The "axistream-connected", "pcs-handle" and
"phy-handle" phandle lookups stay too: a caller without an OF node takes
neither branch, getting its DMA registers from its own platform
resources, and it cannot use the SGMII and 1000BASE-X modes, which need
a PCS.
No functional change intended.
Tested on the X2 with a local ptp_ocp change, with CONFIG_OF disabled
and enabled: the interface probes with its configuration read from the
software node and passes traffic. No device tree board was available,
so the claim that this is a no-op for device tree users rests on the
dispatch described above.

"xlnx,rxmem" device-tree property is used to learn the size of the Rx/Tx
packet buffer built into the ethernet IP, but return value of
of_property_read_u32() is ignored. When the property is absent lp->rxmem is
left at 0, which silently limits the interface to the default MTU and
disables jumbo frames with no indication of the misconfiguration.
"xlnx,rxmem" has been documented as a required property since the binding
was introduced. Check the return value of of_property_read_u32() and fail
probe when the property is missing, so a misconfigured device tree is
reported rather than silently degrading functionality.

The dmaengine path shares ethtool_ops with the legacy AXI DMA path,
including .get_coalesce/.set_coalesce that poke XAXIDMA_*_CR_OFFSET
directly. In dmaengine mode lp->dma_regs is not mapped by axienet, so
those ethtool calls touch unmapped/unrelated memory and report values
unrelated to the channel actually in use.
.get_ringparam/.set_ringparam only touch lp->rx_bd_num/lp->tx_bd_num,
fields used only by the legacy path for BD ring sizing. In dmaengine
mode the descriptor ring is owned by the dmaengine provider and these
fields are not consulted, so reporting them is misleading.
No dmaengine API exists today to query or program either coalescing
or ring size on behalf of the client, so neither can be exposed
meaningfully in dmaengine mode.
Add axienet_ethtool_dmaengine_ops without the coalesce and ringparam
hooks. Also move the ethtool_ops assignment from early probe into the
if/else alongside netdev_ops, so the legacy and dmaengine paths pick
their respective ops in one place. No functional change for the
legacy DMA path.

When a TX packet spans multiple buffer descriptors (scatter-gather),
axienet_free_tx_chain sums the per-BD actual length from descriptor
status into a caller-provided accumulator. That sum is reset on each
NAPI poll. If the BDs for a single packet complete across different
polls, the earlier bytes are lost and never credited to BQL. This
causes BQL to think bytes are permanently in-flight, eventually
stalling the TX queue.
The SKB pointer is stored only on the last BD of a packet. When that
BD completes, use skb->len for the byte count instead of summing
per-BD status lengths. This matches netdev_sent_queue(), which debits
skb->len, and naturally survives across polls because no partial
packet contributes to the accumulator.

The XAXIDMA_BD_CTRL_LENGTH_MASK and XAXIDMA_BD_STS_ACTUAL_LEN_MASK
macros were defined as 0x007FFFFF (23 bits), but the AXI DMA IP
product guide (PG021) specifies the buffer length field as bits 25:0
(26 bits). Update both masks to match the IP documentation.
In practice this had no functional impact, since Ethernet frames are
far smaller than 2^23 bytes and the extra bits were always zero, but
the masks should still reflect the hardware specification.

This converts some of the visually simpler cases that have been split
over multiple lines. I only did the ones that are easy to verify the
resulting diff by having just that final GFP_KERNEL argument on the next
line.
Somebody should probably do a proper coccinelle script for this, but for
me the trivial script actually resulted in an assertion failure in the
middle of the script. I probably had made it a bit _too_ trivial.
So after fighting that far a while I decided to just do some of the
syntactically simpler cases with variations of the previous 'sed'

Note that due to the extreme simplicity of the scripting, any slightly

The function ll_temac_ethtools_set_ringparam() incorrectly checked
rx_pending twice, once correctly for RX and once mistakenly in place
of tx_pending. This caused tx_pending to be left unchecked against
TX_BD_NUM_MAX.
As a result, invalid TX ring sizes may have been accepted or valid
ones wrongly rejected based on the RX limit, leading to potential
misconfiguration or unexpected results.

The external PHY will undergo a soft reset twice during the resume process
when it wake up from suspend. The first reset occurs when the axienet
driver calls phylink_of_phy_connect(), and the second occurs when
mdio_bus_phy_resume() invokes phy_init_hw(). The second soft reset of the
external PHY does not reinitialize the internal PHY, which causes issues
with the internal PHY, resulting in the PHY link being down. To prevent
this, setting the mac_managed_pm flag skips the mdio_bus_phy_resume()
function.

The default RX IRQ coalescing settings of one IRQ per packet can represent
a significant CPU load. However, increasing the coalescing unilaterally
can result in undesirable latency under low load. Adaptive IRQ
coalescing with DIM offers a way to adjust the coalescing settings based
on load.
This device only supports "CQE" mode [1], where each packet resets the
timer. Therefore, an interrupt is fired either when we receive
coalesce_count_rx packets or when the interface is idle for
coalesce_usec_rx. With this in mind, consider the following scenarios:
Link saturated
Here we want to set coalesce_count_rx to a large value, in order to
coalesce more packets and reduce CPU load. coalesce_usec_rx should
be set to at least the time for one packet. Otherwise the link will
be "idle" and we will get an interrupt for each packet anyway.
Bursts of packets
Each burst should be coalesced into a single interrupt, although it
may be prudent to reduce coalesce_count_rx for better latency.
coalesce_usec_rx should be set to at least the time for one packet
so bursts are coalesced. However, additional time beyond the packet
time will just increase latency at the end of a burst.
Sporadic packets
Due to low load, we can set coalesce_count_rx to 1 in order to
reduce latency to the minimum. coalesce_usec_rx does not matter in
this case.
Based on this analysis, I expected the CQE profiles to look something
like
usec = 0, pkts = 1 // Low load
usec = 16, pkts = 4
usec = 16, pkts = 16
usec = 16, pkts = 64
usec = 16, pkts = 256 // High load
Where usec is set to 16 to be a few us greater than the 12.3 us packet
time of a 1500 MTU packet at 1 GBit/s. However, the CQE profile is
instead
usec = 2, pkts = 256 // Low load
usec = 8, pkts = 128
usec = 16, pkts = 64
usec = 32, pkts = 64
usec = 64, pkts = 64 // High load
I found this very surprising. The number of coalesced packets
*decreases* as load increases. But as load increases we have more
opportunities to coalesce packets without affecting latency as much.
Additionally, the profile *increases* the usec as the load increases.
But as load increases, the gaps between packets will tend to become
smaller, making it possible to *decrease* usec for better latency at the
end of a "burst".
I consider the default CQE profile unsuitable for this NIC. Therefore,
we use the first profile outlined in this commit instead.
coalesce_usec_rx is set to 16 by default, but the user can customize it.
This may be necessary if they are using jumbo frames. I think adjusting
the profile times based on the link speed/mtu would be good improvement
for generic DIM.
In addition to the above profile problems, I noticed the following
additional issues with DIM while testing:
- DIM tends to "wander" when at low load, since the performance gradient
is pretty flat. If you only have 10p/ms anyway then adjusting the
coalescing settings will not affect throughput very much.
- DIM takes a long time to adjust back to low indices when load is
decreased following a period of high load. This is because it only
re-evaluates its settings once every 64 interrupts. However, at low
load 64 interrupts can be several seconds.
Finally: performance. This patch increases receive throughput with
iperf3 from 840 Mbits/sec to 938 Mbits/sec, decreases interrupts from
69920/sec to 316/sec, and decreases CPU utilization (4x Cortex-A53) from
43% to 9%.

In preparation for adaptive IRQ coalescing, we first need to support
adjusting the settings at runtime. The existing code doesn't require any
locking because
- dma_start is the only function that modifies rx/tx_dma_cr. It is
always called with IRQs and NAPI disabled, so nothing else is touching
the hardware.
- The IRQs don't race with poll, since the latter is a softirq.
- The IRQs don't race with dma_stop since they both just clear the
control registers.
- dma_stop doesn't race with poll since the former is called with NAPI
disabled.
However, once we introduce another function that modifies rx/tx_dma_cr,
we need to have some locking to prevent races. Introduce two locks to
protect these variables and their registers.
The control register values are now generated where the coalescing
settings are set. Converting coalescing settings to control register
values may require sleeping because of clk_get_rate. However, the
read/modify/write of the control registers themselves can't sleep
because it needs to happen in IRQ context. By pre-calculating the
control register values, we avoid introducing an additional mutex.
Since axienet_dma_start writes the control settings when it runs, we
don't bother updating the CR registers when rx/tx_dma_started is false.
This prevents any issues from writing to the control registers in the
middle of a reset sequence.
