Pull MM updates from Andrew Morton:
- "powerpc/64s: do not re-activate batched TLB flush" makes
arch_{enter|leave}_lazy_mmu_mode() nest properly (Alexander Gordeev)
It adds a generic enter/leave layer and switches architectures to use
it. Various hacks were removed in the process.
- "zram: introduce compressed data writeback" implements data
compression for zram writeback (Richard Chang and Sergey Senozhatsky)

reliability" improves the reliability of two of the DAMON selftests

- "Docs/mm/damon: update intro, modules, maintainer profile, and misc"

- "mm: add and use vma_assert_stabilised() helper" refactors and cleans
up the core VMA code. The main aim here is to be able to use the mmap
write lock's lockdep state to perform various assertions regarding
the locking which the VMA code requires (Lorenzo Stoakes)
- "mm, swap: swap table phase II: unify swapin use" removes some old
swap code (swap cache bypassing and swap synchronization) which
wasn't working very well. Various other cleanups and simplifications
were made. The end result is a 20% speedup in one benchmark (Kairui
Song)
- "enable PT_RECLAIM on more 64-bit architectures" makes PT_RECLAIM
available on 64-bit alpha, loongarch, mips, parisc, and um. Various

Pull ext4 updates from Ted Ts'o:
"New features and improvements for the ext4 file system
- Avoid unnecessary cache invalidation in the extent status cache
(es_cache) when adding extents to be cached in the es_cache and we
are not changing the extent tree
- Add a sysfs parameter, err_report_sec, to control how frequently to
log a warning message that file system inconsistency has been
detected (Previously we logged the warning message every 24 hours)
- Avoid unnecessary forced ordered writes when appending to a file
when delayed allocation is enabled
- Defer splitting unwritten extents to I/O completion to improve
write performance of concurrent direct I/O writes to multiple files
- Refactor and add kunit tests to the extent splitting and conversion
code paths
Various Bug Fixes:
- Fix a panic when the debugging DOUBLE_CHECK macro is defined
- Avoid using fast commit for rare and complex file system operations
to make fast commit easier to reason about. This can also avoid
some corner cases that could result in file system inconsistency if
there is a crash between the fast commit before a subsequent full
commit
- Fix memory leaks in error paths
- Fix a false positive reports caused when running stress tests using
mixed huge-page workloads caused by a race between page migration
and bitmap updates
- Fix a potential recursion into file system reclaim when evicting an
inode when fast commit is enabled
- Fix a warning caused by a potential double decrement to the dirty
clusters counter when executing FS_IOC_SHUTDOWN when running a
stress test
- Enable mballoc optimized scanning regardless whether the inode is
using indirect blocks or extent trees to map blocks"

Pull networking updates from Paolo Abeni:
"Core & protocols:
- A significant effort all around the stack to guide the compiler to
make the right choice when inlining code, to avoid unneeded calls
for small helper and stack canary overhead in the fast-path.
This generates better and faster code with very small or no text
size increases, as in many cases the call generated more code than
the actual inlined helper.
- Extend AccECN implementation so that is now functionally complete,
also allow the user-space enabling it on a per network namespace
basis.
- Add support for memory providers with large (above 4K) rx buffer.
Paired with hw-gro, larger rx buffer sizes reduce the number of
buffers traversing the stack, dincreasing single stream CPU usage
by up to ~30%.
- Do not add HBH header to Big TCP GSO packets. This simplifies the
RX path, the TX path and the NIC drivers, and is possible because
user-space taps can now interpret correctly such packets without
the HBH hint.
- Allow IPv6 routes to be configured with a gateway address that is
resolved out of a different interface than the one specified,
aligning IPv6 to IPv4 behavior.
- Multi-queue aware sch_cake. This makes it possible to scale the
rate shaper of sch_cake across multiple CPUs, while still enforcing
a single global rate on the interface.
- Add support for the nbcon (new buffer console) infrastructure to
netconsole, enabling lock-free, priority-based console operations
that are safer in crash scenarios.
- Improve the TCP ipv6 output path to cache the flow information,
saving cpu cycles, reducing cache line misses and stack use.
- Improve netfilter packet tracker to resolve clashes for most
protocols, avoiding unneeded drops on rare occasions.
- Add IP6IP6 tunneling acceleration to the flowtable infrastructure.
- Reduce tcp socket size by one cache line.
- Notify neighbour changes atomically, avoiding inconsistencies
between the notification sequence and the actual states sequence.
- Add vsock namespace support, allowing complete isolation of vsocks
across different network namespaces.
- Improve xsk generic performances with cache-alignment-oriented
optimizations.
- Support netconsole automatic target recovery, allowing netconsole
to reestablish targets when underlying low-level interface comes
back online.
Driver API:
- Support for switching the working mode (automatic vs manual) of a
DPLL device via netlink.
- Introduce PHY ports representation to expose multiple front-facing
media ports over a single MAC.
- Introduce "rx-polarity" and "tx-polarity" device tree properties,

"In this cycle, inode page cache sharing among filesystems on the same
machine is now supported, which is particularly useful for
high-density hosts running tens of thousands of containers.
In addition, we fully isolate the EROFS core on-disk format from other
optional encoded layouts since the core on-disk part is designed to be
simple, effective, and secure. Users can use the core format to build
unique golden immutable images and import their filesystem trees
directly from raw block devices via DMA, page-mapped DAX devices,
and/or file-backed mounts without having to worry about unnecessary
intrinsic consistency issues found in other generic filesystems by
design. However, the full vision is still working in progress and will
spend more time to achieve final goals.
There are other improvements and bug fixes as usual, as listed below:
- Support inode page cache sharing among filesystems
- Formally separate optional encoded (aka compressed) inode layouts
(and the implementations) from the EROFS core on-disk aligned plain

Pull vfs timestamp updates from Christian Brauner:
"This contains the changes to support non-blocking timestamp updates.
Since commit 66fa3cedf16a ("fs: Add async write file modification
handling") file_update_time_flags() unconditionally returns -EAGAIN
when any timestamp needs updating and IOCB_NOWAIT is set. This makes
non-blocking direct writes impossible on file systems with granular
enough timestamps, which in practice means all of them.
This reworks the timestamp update path to propagate IOCB_NOWAIT
through ->update_time so that file systems which can update timestamps
without blocking are no longer penalized.
With that groundwork in place, the core change passes IOCB_NOWAIT into
->update_time and returns -EAGAIN only when the file system indicates
it would block.
XFS implements non-blocking timestamp updates by using the new
->sync_lazytime and open-coding generic_update_time without the
S_NOWAIT check, since the lazytime path through the generic helpers
can never block in XFS"

Similar to tcp, provide a new tracepoint to better understand
mptcp_rcv_space_adjust() behavior, which presents many artifacts.
Note that the used format string is so long that I preferred
wrap it, contrary to guidance for quoted strings.

The dma_map_sg tracepoint can trigger a perf buffer overflow when
tracing large scatter-gather lists. With devices like virtio-gpu
creating large DRM buffers, nents can exceed 1000 entries, resulting
in:
phys_addrs: 1000 * 8 bytes = 8,000 bytes
dma_addrs: 1000 * 8 bytes = 8,000 bytes
lengths: 1000 * 4 bytes = 4,000 bytes
Total: ~20,000 bytes
This exceeds PERF_MAX_TRACE_SIZE (8192 bytes), causing:
WARNING: CPU: 0 PID: 5497 at kernel/trace/trace_event_perf.c:405
perf buffer not large enough, wanted 24620, have 8192
Cap all three dynamic arrays at 128 entries using min() in the array
size calculation. This ensures arrays are only as large as needed
(up to the cap), avoiding unnecessary memory allocation for small
operations while preventing overflow for large ones.
The tracepoint now records the full nents/ents counts and a truncated
flag so users can see when data has been capped.
Changes in v2:
- Use min(nents, DMA_TRACE_MAX_ENTRIES) for dynamic array sizing
instead of fixed DMA_TRACE_MAX_ENTRIES allocation (feedback from
Steven Rostedt)
- This allocates only what's needed up to the cap, avoiding waste
for small operations

The current cgroup subsystem limit of 16 is insufficient, as the number of
existing subsystems has already reached this limit. When adding a new
subsystem that is not yet in the mainline kernel, building with
`make allmodconfig` requires first bypassing the
`BUILD_BUG_ON(CGROUP_SUBSYS_COUNT > 16)` restriction to allow compilation
to succeed. However, the kernel still fails to boot afterward.
This patch increases the maximum number of supported cgroup subsystems from
16 to 32, providing enough room for future subsystem additions.

Currently, kswapd_failures is reset in multiple places (kswapd, direct
reclaim, PCP freeing, memory-tiers), but there's no way to trace when and
why it was reset, making it difficult to debug memory reclaim issues.
This patch:
1. Introduce kswapd_clear_hopeless() as a wrapper function to
centralize kswapd_failures reset logic.
2. Introduce kswapd_test_hopeless() to encapsulate hopeless node
checks, replacing all open-coded kswapd_failures comparisons.
3. Add kswapd_clear_hopeless_reason enum to distinguish reset sources:
- KSWAPD_CLEAR_HOPELESS_KSWAPD: reset from kswapd context
- KSWAPD_CLEAR_HOPELESS_DIRECT: reset from direct reclaim
- KSWAPD_CLEAR_HOPELESS_PCP: reset from PCP page freeing
- KSWAPD_CLEAR_HOPELESS_OTHER: reset from other paths
4. Add tracepoints for better observability:
- mm_vmscan_kswapd_clear_hopeless: traces each reset with reason
- mm_vmscan_kswapd_reclaim_fail: traces each kswapd reclaim failure

Patch series "mm/khugepaged: fix dirty page handling for MADV_COLLAPSE",
v5.
MADV_COLLAPSE on file-backed mappings fails with -EINVAL when TEXT pages
are dirty. This affects scenarios like package/container updates or
executing binaries immediately after writing them, etc.
The issue is that collapse_file() triggers async writeback and returns
SCAN_FAIL (maps to -EINVAL), expecting khugepaged to revisit later. But
MADV_COLLAPSE is synchronous and userspace expects immediate success or
a clear retry signal.
Reproduction:
- Compile or copy 2MB-aligned executable to XFS/ext4 FS
- Call MADV_COLLAPSE on .text section
- First call fails with -EINVAL (text pages dirty from copy)
- Second call succeeds (async writeback completed)

When collapse_file encounters dirty or writeback pages in file-backed
mappings, it currently returns SCAN_FAIL which maps to -EINVAL. This is
misleading as EINVAL suggests invalid arguments, whereas dirty/writeback
pages represent transient conditions that may resolve on retry.
Introduce SCAN_PAGE_DIRTY_OR_WRITEBACK to cover both dirty and writeback
states, mapping it to -EAGAIN. For MADV_COLLAPSE, this provides userspace
with a clear signal that retry may succeed after writeback completes. For
khugepaged, this is harmless as it will naturally revisit the range during
periodic scans after async writeback completes.

The trace_erofs_read_folio accesses inode information through folio,
but this method fails if the real inode is not associated with the
folio(such as in the upcoming page cache sharing case). Therefore,
we pass the real inode to it so that the inode information can be
printed out in that case.

Laptop mode was introduced to save battery, by delaying and consolidating
writes and thereby maximize the time rotating hard drives wouldn't have to
spin.
Luckily, rotating hard drives, with their high spin-up times and power
draw, are a thing of the past for battery-powered devices. Reclaim has
also since changed to not write single filesystem pages anymore, and
regular filesystem writeback is lumpy by design.
The juice doesn't appear worth the squeeze anymore. The footprint of the
feature is small, but nevertheless it's a complicating factor in mm,
block, filesystems. Developers don't think about it, and it likely hasn't
been tested with new reclaim and writeback changes in years.
Let's sunset it. Keep the sysctl with a deprecation warning around for a
few more cycles, but remove all functionality behind it.

DAMON users can read DAMOS stats via DAMON sysfs interface. It enables
efficient, simple and flexible usages of the stats. Especially for
systems not having advanced tools like perf or bpftrace, that can be
useful. But if the advanced tools are available, exposing the stats via
tracepoint can reduce unnecessary reimplementation of the wheels. Add a
new tracepoint for DAMOS stats, namely damos_stat_after_apply_interval.
The tracepoint is triggered for each scheme's apply interval and exposes
the whole stat values. If the user needs sub-apply interval information
for any chance, damos_before_apply tracepoint could be used.

Fast commits only log operations that have dedicated replay support.
EXT4_IOC_MOVE_EXT swaps extents between regular files and may copy
data, rewriting the affected inodes' block mapping layout without
going through the fast commit tracking paths.
In practice these operations are rare and usually followed by further
updates, but mixing them into a fast commit makes the overall
semantics harder to reason about and risks replay gaps if new call
sites appear.
Teach ext4 to mark the filesystem fast-commit ineligible for the
journal transactions used by move_extent_per_page() when
EXT4_IOC_MOVE_EXT runs.
This forces those transactions to fall back to a full commit,
ensuring that these multi-inode extent swaps are captured by the
normal journal rather than partially encoded in fast commit TLVs.
This change should not affect common workloads but makes online
defragmentation safer and easier to reason about under fast commit.
Testing:
1. prepare:
dd if=/dev/zero of=/root/fc_move.img bs=1M count=0 seek=256
mkfs.ext4 -O fast_commit -F /root/fc_move.img
mkdir -p /mnt/fc_move && mount -t ext4 -o loop \

ext4_end_enable_verity() starts its journal transaction.
This forces that transaction to fall back to a full commit, ensuring
that the fs-verity enable changes are captured by the normal journal
rather than partially encoded in fast commit TLVs.
This change should not affect common workloads but makes fs-verity
enable safer and easier to reason about under fast commit.

If rxrpc_recvmsg() fails because MSG_DONTWAIT was specified but the call at
the front of the recvmsg queue already has its mutex locked, it requeues
the call - whether or not the call is already queued. The call may be on
the queue because MSG_PEEK was also passed and so the call was not dequeued
or because the I/O thread requeued it.
The unconditional requeue may then corrupt the recvmsg queue, leading to
things like UAFs or refcount underruns.
Fix this by only requeuing the call if it isn't already on the queue - and
moving it to the front if it is already queued. If we don't queue it, we
have to put the ref we obtained by dequeuing it.
Also, MSG_PEEK doesn't dequeue the call so shouldn't call
rxrpc_notify_socket() for the call if we didn't use up all the data on the
queue, so fix that also.

I haven't found an NFSERR_EAGAIN in RFCs 1094, 1813, 7530, or 8881.
None of these RFCs have an NFS status code that match the numeric
value "11".
Based on the meaning of the EAGAIN errno, I presume the use of this
status in NFSD means NFS4ERR_DELAY. So replace the one usage of
nfserr_eagain, and remove it from NFSD's NFS status conversion
tables.
As far as I can tell, NFSERR_EAGAIN has existed since the pre-git
era, but was not actually used by any code until commit f4e44b393389
("NFSD: delay unmount source's export after inter-server copy
completed."), at which time it become possible for NFSD to return
a status code of 11 (which is not valid NFS protocol).

PCIe link speed degradation directly impacts system performance and often
indicates hardware issues such as faulty devices, physical layer problems,
or configuration errors.
To this end, add a RAS tracepoint to monitor link speed changes, enabling
proactive health checks and diagnostic analysis.
The following output is generated when a device is hotplugged:

Hotplug events are critical indicators for analyzing hardware health, and
surprise link downs can significantly impact system performance and
reliability.
Define a new TRACING_SYSTEM named "pci", add a generic RAS tracepoint
for hotplug event to help health checks. Add enum pci_hotplug_event in
include/uapi/linux/pci.h so applications like rasdaemon can register
tracepoint event handlers for it.
The following output is generated when a device is hotplugged:

dmabuf_list, we need to add our own tracepoints to track its status in
real time in production.

When evicting an inode the first thing we do is to setup tracing for it,
which implies fetching the root's id. But in btrfs_evict_inode() the
root might be NULL, as implied in the next check that we do in
btrfs_evict_inode().
Hence, we either should set the ->root_objectid to 0 in case the root is
NULL, or we move tracing setup after checking that the root is not
NULL. Setting the rootid to 0 at least gives us the possibility to trace
this call even in the case when the root is NULL, so that's the solution
taken here.

This patch adds trace points to the Ceph filesystem MDS client:
- request submission (CEPH_MSG_CLIENT_REQUEST) and completion
(CEPH_MSG_CLIENT_REPLY)
- capabilities (CEPH_MSG_CLIENT_CAPS)
These are the central pieces that are useful for analyzing MDS
latency/performance problems from the client's perspective.
In the long run, all doutc() calls should be replaced with
tracepoints. This way, the Ceph filesystem can be traced at any time
(without spamming the kernel log). Additionally, trace points can be
used in BPF programs (which can even deference the pointer parameters
and extract more values).

The trace options were defined by a 32 bit variable. This limits the

option mask to a 64 bit number, doubling the number of options
available.
As this is required for the kprobe topic branches as well as the
tracing topic branch, a separate branch was created and merged into
both.
- Make trace_user_fault_read() available for the rest of tracing
The function trace_user_fault_read() is used by trace_marker file
read to allow reading user space to be done fast and without locking
or allocations. Make this available so that the system call trace
events can use it too.
- Have system call trace events read user space values
Now that the system call trace events callbacks are called in a
faultable context, take advantage of this and read the user space
buffers for various system calls. For example, show the path name of
the openat system call instead of just showing the pointer to that
path name in user space. Also show the contents of the buffer of the
write system call. Several system call trace events are updated to
make tracing into a light weight strace tool for all applications in
the system.
- Update perf system call tracing to do the same
- And a config and syscall_user_buf_size file to control the size of
the buffer
Limit the amount of data that can be read from user space. The
default size is 63 bytes but that can be expanded to 165 bytes.
- Allow the persistent ring buffer to print system calls normally
The persistent ring buffer prints trace events by their type and
ignores the print_fmt. This is because the print_fmt may change from
kernel to kernel. As the system call output is fixed by the system
call ABI itself, there's no reason to limit that. This makes reading
the system call events in the persistent ring buffer much nicer and
easier to understand.
- Add options to show text offset to function profiler
The function profiler that counts the number of times a function is
hit currently lists all functions by its name and offset. But this
becomes ambiguous when there are several functions with the same
name.
Add a tracing option that changes the output to be that of
'_text+offset' instead. Now a user space tool can use this
information to map the '_text+offset' to the unique function it is
counting.
- Report bad dynamic event command
If a bad command is passed to the dynamic_events file, report it
properly in the error log.
- Clean up tracer options
Clean up the tracer option code a bit, by removing some useless code
and also using switch statements instead of a series of if
statements.
- Have tracing options be instance specific
Tracers can have their own options (function tracer, irqsoff tracer,
function graph tracer, etc). But now that the same tracer can be
enabled in multiple trace instances, their options are still global.
The API is per instance, thus changing one affects other instances.
This isn't even consistent, as the option take affect differently
depending on when an tracer started in an instance. Make the options
for instances only affect the instance it is changed under.
- Optimize pid_list lock contention
Whenever the pid_list is read, it uses a spin lock. This happens at
every sched switch. Taking the lock at sched switch can be removed by
instead using a seqlock counter.
- Clean up the trace trigger structures
The trigger code uses two different structures to implement a single
tigger. This was due to trying to reuse code for the two different
types of triggers (always on trigger, and count limited trigger). But
by adding a single field to one structure, the other structure could
be absorbed into the first structure making he code easier to
understand.
- Create a bulk garbage collector for trace triggers
If user space has triggers for several hundreds of events and then
removes them, it can take several seconds to complete. This is
because each removal calls tracepoint_synchronize_unregister() that
can take hundreds of milliseconds to complete.
Instead, create a helper thread that will do the clean up. When a
trigger is removed, it will create the kthread if it isn't already
created, and then add the trigger to a llist. The kthread will take
the items off the llist, call tracepoint_synchronize_unregister(),
and then remove the items it took off. It will then check if there's
more items to free before sleeping.
This makes user space removing all these triggers to finish in less
than a second.
- Allow function tracing of some of the tracing infrastructure code
Because the tracing code can cause recursion issues if it is traced
by the function tracer the entire tracing directory disables function
tracing. But not all of tracing causes issues if it is traced.
Namely, the event tracing code. Add a config that enables some of the
tracing code to be traced to help in debugging it. Note, when this is
enabled, it does add noise to general function tracing, especially if
events are enabled as well (which is a common case).
- Add boot-time backup instance for persistent buffer
The persistent ring buffer is used mostly for kernel crash analysis
in the field. One issue is that if there's a crash, the data in the
persistent ring buffer must be read before tracing can begin using
it. This slows down the boot process. Once tracing starts in the
persistent ring buffer, the old data must be freed and the addresses
no longer match and old events can't be in the buffer with new
events.
Create a way to create a backup buffer that copies the persistent
ring buffer at boot up. Then after a crash, the always on tracer can
begin immediately as well as the normal boot process while the crash
analysis tooling uses the backup buffer. After the backup buffer is
finished being read, it can be removed.
- Enable function graph args and return address options at the same
time
Currently the when reading of arguments in the function graph tracer
is enabled, the option to record the parent function in the entry
event can not be enabled. Update the code so that it can.
- Add new struct_offset() helper macro
Add a new macro that takes a pointer to a structure and a name of one
of its members and it will return the offset of that member. This
allows the ring buffer code to simplify the following:
From: size = struct_size(entry, buf, cnt - sizeof(entry->id));
To: size = struct_offset(entry, id) + cnt;
There should be other simplifications that this macro can help out
with as well

changes in generic code.
The biggest individual update is a rename of the existing Microchip
driver and the addition of a new driver for the silicon SPI controller
in their PolarFire SoCs. The overlap between the soft IP supported by
the current driver and this new one is regrettably all in the IP and
not in the register interface offered to software.
- Add a time offset parameter for offloads, allowing them to be
defined in relation to each other. This is useful for IIO type
applcations where you trigger an operation then read the result
after a delay.
- Add a tracepoint for flash exec_ops, bringing the flash support
more in line with the debuggability of vanilla SPI.
- Support for Airoha EN7523, Arduino MCUs, Aspeed AST2700, Microchip
PolarFire SPI controllers, NXP i.MX51 ECSPI target mode, Qualcomm

The io_uring_queue_async_work tracepoint event stores an int rw field
that represents whether the work item is hashed. Rename it to "hashed"
and change its type to bool to more accurately reflect its value.

This patch optimizes the tracepoint by replacing these hardcoded strings
with a new enumeration f2fs_cp_phase.
1.Defines enum f2fs_cp_phase with values for each checkpoint phase.
2.Updates trace_f2fs_write_checkpoint to accept a u16 phase argument
instead of a string pointer.
3.Uses __print_symbolic in TP_printk to convert the enum values
back to their corresponding strings for human-readable trace output.
This change reduces the storage overhead for each trace event
by replacing a variable-length string with a 2-byte integer,
while maintaining the same readable output in ftrace.

It recommends to use i_size_{read,write}() to access and update i_size,
otherwise, we may get wrong tearing value due to high 32-bits value
and low 32-bits value of i_size field are not updated atomically in
32-bits archicture machine.
