2025-05-29Merge patch series "Remove <env.h> from <net.h>"Tom Rini
Tom Rini <trini@konsulko.com> says: Hey all, This is a v3 of Simon's series[1] and depends on the series[2] I posted the other day that removes <env.h> from <command.h>. With this series done, I believe we've tackled all of the current cases of headers which include <env.h> without directly needing it. Much of this series is in fact Simon's v2 with the main differneces being: - Removing <env.h> from <net.h> at the end - Removing env_to_ip() given how little it's used rather than shuffling around where it's declared and un-inline'ing it. For a rarely used helper, this ends up being cleaner I think. Especially looking at some of the users (which called env_get repeatedly). If there's strong opinion here about using the other method[3] we can do that instead. - Setting aside for now how to handle CMD_ELF=y and NO_NET=y because today it's actually fine as we unconditionally build lib/net_utils.c where string_to_ip() is defined. I'm unsure if a further series is warranted here or not. We rely on link-time optimization to keep code readable too. 2025-05-29global: Avoid indirect inclusion of <env.h> from <net.h>Tom Rini
Now that env_get_ip() has been removed, the include file <net.h> does not need anything from <env.h>. Furthermore, include/env.h itself includes other headers which can lead to longer indirect inclusion paths. To prepare to remove <env.h> from <net.h> fix all of the remaining places which had relied on this indirect inclusion to instead include <env.h> directly. 2025-05-23Merge patch series "BOOTP/DHCPv4 enhancements"Tom Rini
Sean Edmond <seanedmond@microsoft.com> says: In our datacenter application, a single DHCP server is servicing 36000+ clients. Improvements are required to the DHCPv4 retransmission behavior to align with RFC and ensure less pressure is exerted on the server: - retransmission backoff interval maximum is configurable (environment variable bootpretransmitperiodmax) - initial retransmission backoff interval is configurable (environment variable bootpretransmitperiodinit) - transaction ID is kept the same for each BOOTP/DHCPv4 request (not recreated on each retry) For our application we'll use: - bootpretransmitperiodmax=16000 - bootpretransmitperiodinit=2000 A new configuration BOOTP_RANDOM_XID has been added to enable a randomized BOOTP/DHCPv4 transaction ID. Enhance DHCPv4 sending/parsing option 209 (PXE config file). A previous patch was accepted. A new patch fixes a possible double free() and addresses latest review comments. 2021-11-11pxe: Return the file size from the getfile() functionSimon Glass
It is pretty strange that the pxe code uses the 'filesize' environment variable find the size of a file it has just read. Partly this is because it uses the command-line interpreter to parse its request to load the file. As a first step towards unwinding this, return it directly from the getfile() function. This makes the code a bit longer, for now, but will be cleaned up in future patches. 2021-11-11pxe: Clean up the use of bootfileSimon Glass
The 'bootfile' environment variable is read in the bowels of pxe_util to provide a directory to which all loaded files are relative. This is not obvious from the API to PXE and it is strange to make the caller set an environment variable rather than pass this as a parameter. The code is also convoluted, which this feature implemented by get_bootfile_path(). Update the API to improve this. Unfortunately this means that pxe_setup_ctx() can fail, so add error checking. At present the PXE functions pass around a pointer to command-table entry which is very strange. Create a PXE context struct to hold the command-table-entry pointer and pass that around instead. We can then add more things to the context as needed. 2018-06-05menu: fix timeout durationMasahiro Yamada
For distro-boot, the TIMEOUT directive in the boot script specifies how long to pause in units of 1/10 sec. [1] Commit 8594753ba0a7 ("menu: only timeout when menu is displayed") corrected this by simply dividing the timeout value by 10 in menu_interactive_choice(). I see two problems: - For example, "TIMEOUT 5" should wait for 0.5 sec, but the current implementation cannot handle the granularity of 1/10 sec. In fact, it never breaks because "m->timeout / 10" is zero, which means no timeout. - The menu API is used not only by cmd/pxe.c but also by common/autoboot.c . For the latter case, the unit of the timeout value is _second_ because its default is associated with CONFIG_BOOTDELAY. To fix the first issue, use DIV_ROUND_UP() so that the timeout value is rounded up to the closest integer. For the second issue, move the division to the boundary between cmd/pxe.c and common/menu.c . This is a more desirable place because the comment of struct pxe_menu says: * timeout - time in tenths of a second to wait for a user key-press before * booting the default label. Then, the comment of menu_create() says: * timeout - A delay in seconds to wait for user input. If 0, timeout is * disabled, and the default choice will be returned unless prompt is 1. 2018-05-07SPDX: Convert all of our single license tags to Linux Kernel styleTom Rini
When U-Boot started using SPDX tags we were among the early adopters and there weren't a lot of other examples to borrow from. So we picked the area of the file that usually had a full license text and replaced it with an appropriate SPDX-License-Identifier: entry. Since then, the Linux Kernel has adopted SPDX tags and they place it as the very first line in a file (except where shebangs are used, then it's second line) and with slightly different comment styles than us. In part due to community overlap, in part due to better tag visibility and in part for other minor reasons, switch over to that style. This commit changes all instances where we have a single declared license in the tag as both the before and after are identical in tag contents. There's also a few places where I found we did not have a tag and have introduced one. Signed-off-by: Tom Rini <trini@konsulko.com>
2017-10-16cmd/pxe.c: Rework bootargs construction to clarify string checksTom Rini
As the code currently stands, we first check that the length of the given command line, along with ip_str/mac_str along with an additional 1 for the NULL termination will fit within the buffer we have, and if not, we return an error. The way this code was originally written however left Coverity "unhappy" due to using strcat rather than strncat. Switching this to strncat however causes clang to be unhappy that we aren't enforcing the "1" portion within strncat. Rather than further re-work the code to include a "- 1" in this case as well, make the strcat code only be done within the else side of the length test. This keeps both clang and Coverity happy. 2017-10-06cmd/pxe.c: Rework initrd and bootargs handling slightlyTom Rini
For the initrd portion of handling our bootm arguments we do not have a sufficiently long enough buffer for some improbable 64bit cases. Expand this buffer to allow for a 64bit address and almost 256MB initrd to be used. Make use of strncpy/strncat when constructing the values here since we know what the worst case valid values are, length wise. Similarly for bootargs themselves, we need to make use of strlen/sizeof and strncpy/strncat to ensure that we don't overflow bootargs itself.
