It's a common operation for Netlink CLI tools (when translating names to ifindexes) and previously required full rtnl_lock. - Support dumping qdiscs and page pools for a specific netdev. Even tho user space wants a dump of all netdevs, most of the time, the OOO programming model results in repeating the dump for each netdev. The new interface identifies the SA via SPI and mark, supports reqid changes, address family changes, encap removal, and uses an atomic create+install flow under x->lock to prevent SN/IV reuse during AEAD SA migration. - Implement GRO/GSO support for PPPoE. - Convert sockopt callbacks in a number of protocols to iov_iter. Cross-tree stuff: - Remove support for Crypto TFM cloning (unblocked after the TCP Auth Option rework). This feature regressed performance for all crypto API users, since it changed crypto transformation objects into reference-counted objects. - Add FCrypt-PCBC implementation to rxrpc and remove it from the global crypto API as obsolete and insecure. 2026-06-09crypto: pcbc - Remove support for PCBC modeEric Biggers
The only user of PCBC mode (Propagating Cipher Block Chaining mode) was net/rxrpc/rxkad.c, which now uses local code instead. While PCBC was an interesting cryptographic experiment, it has largely been relegated to the history books and academic exercises. It is non-parallelizable (i.e., very slow) and doesn't actually achieve the integrity properties it was apparently intended to achieve. Remove support for it from the crypto API. 2026-06-09crypto: fcrypt - Remove support for FCrypt block cipherEric Biggers
Remove the insecure FCrypt block cipher from the crypto API. Its only user was net/rxrpc/, but now net/rxrpc/ implements it locally. The crypto API implementation is no longer needed. For some additional context: FCrypt was designed in 1988 and is essentially a weakened version of DES. It has the same 56-bit key size as DES, which is easily brute forced. Moreover, it's cryptographically weak and doesn't even provide the intended 56-bit security level. Its author considers it to be a mistake, as well (https://lists.openafs.org/pipermail/openafs-devel/2000-December/005320.html). But fortunately this 1980s-era homebrew block cipher was never adopted outside of net/rxrpc/. So its code can just be kept there. 2026-05-07crypto: drbg - Remove support for HASH_DRBGEric Biggers
Remove the support for HASH_DRBG. It's likely unused code, seeing as HMAC_DRBG is always enabled and prioritized over it unless NETLINK_CRYPTO is used to change the algorithm priorities. There's also no compelling reason to support more than one of [HMAC_DRBG, HASH_DRBG, CTR_DRBG]. By definition, callers cannot tell any difference in their outputs. And all are FIPS-certifiable, which is the only point of the kernel's NIST DRBGs anyway. Switching to HASH_DRBG doesn't seem all that compelling, either. For one, it's more complex than HMAC_DRBG. Thus, let's just drop HASH_DRBG support and focus on HMAC_DRBG. 2026-05-07crypto: drbg - Remove support for CTR_DRBGEric Biggers
Remove the support for CTR_DRBG. It's likely unused code, seeing as HMAC_DRBG is always enabled and prioritized over it unless NETLINK_CRYPTO is used to change the algorithm priorities. There's also no compelling reason to support more than one of [HMAC_DRBG, HASH_DRBG, CTR_DRBG]. By definition, callers cannot tell any difference in their outputs. And all are FIPS-certifiable, which is the only point of the kernel's NIST DRBGs anyway. Switching to CTR_DRBG doesn't seem all that compelling, either. While it's often the fastest NIST DRBG, it has several disadvantages: - CTR_DRBG uses AES. Some platforms don't have AES acceleration at all, causing a fallback to the table-based AES code which is very slow and can be vulnerable to cache-timing attacks. In contrast, HMAC_DRBG uses primitives that are consistently constant-time. - CTR_DRBG is usually considered to be somewhat less cryptographically robust than HMAC_DRBG. Granted, HMAC_DRBG isn't all that great either, e.g. given the negative result from Woodage & Shumow (2018) (https://eprint.iacr.org/2018/349.pdf), but that can be worked around. - CTR_DRBG is more complex than HMAC_DRBG, risking bugs. Indeed, while reviewing the CTR_DRBG code, I found two bugs, including one where it can return success while leaving the output buffer uninitialized. - The kernel's implementation of CTR_DRBG uses an "ctr(aes)" crypto_skcipher and relies on it returning the next counter value. That's fragile, and indeed historically many "ctr(aes)" crypto_skcipher implementations haven't done that. E.g. see commit 511306b2d075 ("crypto: arm/aes-ce - update IV after partial final CTR block"), commit fa5fd3afc7e6 ("crypto: arm64/aes-blk - update IV after partial final CTR block"), commit 371731ec2179 ("crypto: atmel-aes - Fix saving of IV for CTR mode"), commit 25baaf8e2c93 ("crypto: crypto4xx - fix ctr-aes missing output IV"), commit 334d37c9e263 ("crypto: caam - update IV using HW support"), commit 0a4491d3febe ("crypto: chelsio - count incomplete block in IV"), commit e8e3c1ca57d4 ("crypto: s5p - update iv after AES-CBC op end"). I.e., there were many years where the kernel's CTR_DRBG code (if it were to have actually been used) repeated outputs on some platforms. AES-CTR also uses a 128-bit counter, which creates overflow edge cases that are sometimes gotten wrong. E.g. see commit 009b30ac7444 ("crypto: vmx - CTR: always increment IV as quadword"). So, while switching to CTR_DRBG for performance reasons isn't completely out of the question (notably BoringSSL uses it), it would take quite a bit more work to create a solid implementation of it in the kernel, including a more solid implementation of AES-CTR itself (in lib/crypto/, with a scalar bit-sliced fallback, etc). Since HMAC_DRBG has always been the default NIST DRBG variant in the kernel and is in a better state, let's just standardize on it for now. 2026-04-08crypto: Remove michael_mic from crypto_shash APIEric Biggers
Remove the "michael_mic" crypto_shash algorithm, since it's no longer used. Its only users were wireless drivers, which have now been converted to use the michael_mic() function instead. It makes sense that no other users ever appeared: Michael MIC is an insecure algorithm that is specific to WPA TKIP, which itself was an interim security solution to replace the broken WEP standard. 2025-11-22crypto: ansi_cprng - Remove unused ansi_cprng algorithmEric Biggers
Remove ansi_cprng, since it's obsolete and unused, as confirmed at https://lore.kernel.org/r/aQxpnckYMgAAOLpZ@gondor.apana.org.au/ This was originally added in 2008, apparently as a FIPS approved random number generator. Whether this has ever belonged upstream is questionable. Either way, ansi_cprng is no longer usable for this purpose, since it's been superseded by the more modern algorithms in crypto/drbg.c, and FIPS itself no longer allows it. (NIST SP 800-131A Rev 1 (2015) says that RNGs based on ANSI X9.31 will be disallowed after 2015. NIST SP 800-131A Rev 2 (2019) confirms they are now disallowed.) Therefore, there is no reason to keep it around. Commit d6ace46c82fd ("ext4: remove obsolete EXT3 config options") removed the obsolete EXT3_CONFIG options, since it had been over a decade since fs/ext3 had been removed. Unfortunately, there were a number of defconfigs that still used CONFIG_EXT3_FS which the cleanup commit didn't fix up. This led to a large number of defconfig test builds to fail. Oops. 2025-02-08crypto: crct10dif - remove from crypto APIEric Biggers
Remove the "crct10dif" shash algorithm from the crypto API. It has no known user now that the lib is no longer built on top of it. It has no remaining references in kernel code. The only other potential users would be the usual components that allow specifying arbitrary hash algorithms by name, namely AF_ALG and dm-integrity. However there are no indications that "crct10dif" is being used with these components. Debian Code Search and web searches don't find anything relevant, and explicitly grepping the source code of the usual suspects (cryptsetup, libell, iwd) finds no matches either. "crc32" and "crc32c" are used in a few more places, but that doesn't seem to be the case for "crct10dif". crc_t10dif_update() is also tested by crc_kunit now, so the test coverage provided via the crypto self-tests is no longer needed. Also note that the "crct10dif" shash algorithm was inconsistent with the rest of the shash API in that it wrote the digest in CPU endianness, making the resulting byte array differ on little endian vs. big endian platforms. This means it was effectively just built for use by the lib functions, and it was not actually correct to treat it as "just another hash function" that could be dropped in via the shash API. 2025-01-04crypto: keywrap - remove unused keywrap algorithmEric Biggers
The keywrap (kw) algorithm has no in-tree user. It has never had an in-tree user, and the patch that added it provided no justification for its inclusion. Even use of it via AF_ALG is impossible, as it uses a weird calling convention where part of the ciphertext is returned via the IV buffer, which is not returned to userspace in AF_ALG. It's also unclear whether any new code in the kernel that does key wrapping would actually use this algorithm. It is controversial in the cryptographic community due to having no clearly stated security goal, no security proof, poor performance, and only a 64-bit auth tag. Later work (https://eprint.iacr.org/2006/221) suggested that the goal is deterministic authenticated encryption. But there are now more modern algorithms for this, and this is not the same as key wrapping, for which a regular AEAD such as AES-GCM usually can be (and is) used instead. Therefore, remove this unused code. There were several special cases for this algorithm in the self-tests, due to its weird calling convention. Remove those too. 2025-01-04crypto: vmac - remove unused VMAC algorithmEric Biggers
Remove the vmac64 template, as it has no known users. It also continues to have longstanding bugs such as alignment violations (see https://lore.kernel.org/r/20241226134847.6690-1-evepolonium@gmail.com/). This code was added in 2009 by commit f1939f7c5645 ("crypto: vmac - New hash algorithm for intel_txt support"). Based on the mention of intel_txt support in the commit title, it seems it was added as a prerequisite for the contemporaneous patch "intel_txt: add s3 userspace memory integrity verification" (https://lore.kernel.org/r/4ABF2B50.6070106@intel.com/). In the design proposed by that patch, when an Intel Trusted Execution Technology (TXT) enabled system resumed from suspend, the "tboot" trusted executable launched the Linux kernel without verifying userspace memory, and then the Linux kernel used VMAC to verify userspace memory. However, that patch was never merged, as reviewers had objected to the design. It was later reworked into commit 4bd96a7a8185 ("x86, tboot: Add support for S3 memory integrity protection") which made tboot verify the memory instead. Thus the VMAC support in Linux was never used. No in-tree user has appeared since then, other than potentially the usual components that allow specifying arbitrary hash algorithms by name, namely AF_ALG and dm-integrity. However there are no indications that VMAC is being used with these components. Debian Code Search and web searches for "vmac64" (the actual algorithm name) do not return any results other than the kernel itself, suggesting that it does not appear in any other code or documentation. Explicitly grepping the source code of the usual suspects (libell, iwd, cryptsetup) finds no matches either. Before 2018, the vmac code was also completely broken due to using a hardcoded nonce and the wrong endianness for the MAC. It was then fixed by commit ed331adab35b ("crypto: vmac - add nonced version with big endian digest") and commit 0917b873127c ("crypto: vmac - remove insecure version with hardcoded nonce"). These were intentionally breaking changes that changed all the computed MAC values as well as the algorithm name ("vmac" to "vmac64"). No complaints were ever received about these breaking changes, strongly suggesting the absence of users. The reason I had put some effort into fixing this code in 2018 is because it was used by an out-of-tree driver. But if it is still needed in that particular out-of-tree driver, the code can be carried in that driver instead. There is no need to carry it upstream. As discussed at LSF/MM [1] [2] and with no objections raised there, deprecate the SLAB allocator. Rename the user-visible option so that users with CONFIG_SLAB=y get a new prompt with explanation during make oldconfig, while make olddefconfig will just switch to SLUB. In all defconfigs with CONFIG_SLAB=y remove the line so those also switch to SLUB. Regressions due to the switch should be reported to linux-mm and slab maintainers. DECnet is an obsolete network protocol that receives more attention from kernel janitors than users. It belongs in computer protocol history museum not in Linux kernel. It has been "Orphaned" in kernel since 2010. The iproute2 support for DECnet was dropped in 5.0 release. The documentation link on Sourceforge says it is abandoned there as well. Leave the UAPI alone to keep userspace programs compiling. This means that there is still an empty neighbour table for AF_DECNET. The table of /proc/sys/net entries was updated to match current directories and reformatted to be alphabetical. Currently support for 64-bit sector_t and blkcnt_t is optional on 32-bit architectures. These types are required to support block device and/or file sizes larger than 2 TiB, and have generally defaulted to on for a long time. Enabling the option only increases the i386 tinyconfig size by 145 bytes, and many data structures already always use 64-bit values for their in-core and on-disk data structures anyway, so there should not be a large change in dynamic memory usage either. Dropping this option removes a somewhat weird non-default config that has cause various bugs or compiler warnings when actually used. 2011-01-20kconfig: rename CONFIG_EMBEDDED to CONFIG_EXPERTDavid Rientjes
The meaning of CONFIG_EMBEDDED has long since been obsoleted; the option is used to configure any non-standard kernel with a much larger scope than only small devices. This patch renames the option to CONFIG_EXPERT in init/Kconfig and fixes references to the option throughout the kernel. A new CONFIG_EMBEDDED option is added that automatically selects CONFIG_EXPERT when enabled and can be used in the future to isolate options that should only be considered for embedded systems (RISC architectures, SLOB, etc). Calling the option "EXPERT" more accurately represents its intention: only expert users who understand the impact of the configuration changes they are making should enable it. Currently, MIPS kernels silently overwrite kernel command-line parameters hardcoded in CONFIG_CMDLINE by the ones received from firmware. Therefore, using firmware remains the only reliable method to transfer the command-line parameters, which is not always desirable or convenient, and the CONFIG_CMDLINE option is thereby effectively rendered useless. This patch fixes the problem described above and introduces a more flexible scheme of handling the kernel command line, in a manner identical to what is currently used for x86. The default behavior, i.e. when CONFIG_CMDLINE_BOOL is not defined, retains the existing semantics, and firmware command-line arguments override the hardcoded ones. 2007-02-22[MIPS] Add basic SMARTMIPS ASE supportFranck Bui-Huu
This patch adds trivial support for SMARTMIPS extension. This extension is currently implemented by 4KS[CD] CPUs. Basically it saves/restores ACX register, which is part of the SMARTMIPS ASE, when needed. This patch does *not* add any support for Smartmips MMU features. Futhermore this patch does not add explicit support for 4KS[CD] CPUs since they are respectively mips32 and mips32r2 compliant. So with the current processor configuration, a platform that has such CPUs needs to select both configs: CPU_HAS_SMARTMIPS SYS_HAS_CPU_MIPS32_R[12] This is due to the processor configuration which is mixing up all the architecture variants and the processor types. The drawback of this, is that we currently pass '-march=mips32' option to gcc when building a kernel instead of '-march=4ksc' for 4KSC case. Make HZ configurable. DECSTATION can select 128/256/1024 HZ, JAZZ can only select 100 HZ, others can select 100/128/250/256/1000/1024 HZ if not explicitly specified).
